SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday after a state audit found the California DMV's "motor voter" program that started in 2018 was riddled with technical problems that led to discrepancies in voter registrations.Attorney Harmeet Dhillon, a member of the National Republican party, filed the federal lawsuit Tuesday against the state of California that accuses Secretary of State Alex Padilla of violating the National Voter Registration Act.Padilla responded in a statement saying the lawsuit "is a fundamental misrepresentation" of the act. He called the lawsuit an "underhanded attempt" at voter suppression.Dhillon filed the lawsuit on behalf of three California residents who are Republican voters. The lawsuit also names the director of California's Department of Motor Vehicles, Steve Gordon.Dhillon said that a recent audit that found a variety of problems with California DMV's "motor voter" program, which automatically registers people to vote, helped bring the issues in her lawsuit to light. 1039
Ron Jeremy, an adult film star, is charged with forcibly raping three women and sexually assaulting a fourth in separate incidents between 2014 and 2019.The Los Angeles County District Attorney announced the charges against 67-year-old Ronald Jeremy Hyatt Tuesday, and said three of the incidents happened at the same bar in West Hollywood. The District Attorney accuses Hyatt of sexually assaulting two women, ages 33 and 46, on separate occasions in 2017 at the bar. Then in 2019, the DA states Hyatt raped a 30-year-old woman at the same, unnamed bar.Hyatt is also accused of forcibly raping a 25-year-old woman in May 2014 at a home in West Hollywood. If Hyatt is convicted of these charges, he could face a maximum of 90 years to life in prison. In 2001, a documentary about his career and featuring Hyatt was released, “Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy.” He reportedly has more than 2,000 film credits as an adult film actor. 940
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The chair of the California Democratic Party took a leave of absence Monday amid an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against him.Eric Bauman's leave will last until an outside investigation ends, party spokesman Mike Roth said."Chair Bauman believes this decision is the best way to ensure the independence and integrity of the process," Roth said in a statement. "The Party is confident that the procedures in place will allow for all parties to come forward freely and provide for a thorough and complete review."A party vice chair accused Bauman last week of sexually harassing and assaulting several unnamed people at party functions and called for Bauman's resignation. Others including California U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna and the Orange County Young Democrats called for Bauman to step aside.Daraka Larimore-Hall, the vice chair, spoke to two accusers and a witness, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported.Bauman announced an outside investigation on Saturday."I take seriously any allegation brought forward by anyone who believes they have been caused pain," Bauman said in a statement. "I look forward to putting these allegations behind us and moving forward as unified Democrats."The party's executive board could vote to remove Bauman from office. But Larimore-Hall's call for Bauman's removal is still several steps from such a vote.In a letter to the party last week, Larimore-Hall said stories from Bauman's accusers illustrate a "clear and escalating pattern" of inappropriate behavior.Larimore-Hall did not respond to a request for comment Monday from The Associated Press.Bauman's leave comes just weeks after California Democrats made major gains in the midterm elections, winning key congressional seats in territory long held by Republicans.A series of sexual misconduct allegations against lawmakers, lobbyists and others in politics rocked California's political world late last year, at the height of the #MeToo movement. Three Democratic men resigned as state lawmakers after investigators hired by the Legislature found they likely engaged in inappropriate behavior.Bauman narrowly won the party chairmanship last year against Kimberly Ellis after a contentious battle between establishment Democrats and progressive activists.During that fight, Bauman said he was falsely targeted by rumors he engaged in inappropriate behavior with teenage boys. Bauman is the party's first openly gay chairman.Bauman called the rumors "despicable lies," and Ellis denounced them.First Vice Chair Alex Rooker will take over Bauman's duties while the investigation proceeds. 2628
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Pastor Greg Laurie of the prominent California-based church Harvest Christian Fellowship confirmed he has tested positive for COVID-19.Laurie said in an Instagram posting Monday that he tested positive on Friday and has been in quarantine since then with his wife, but so far all members of his family have tested negative.“My symptoms have been mild so far, and I expect to make a full recovery,” he wrote. “I have always taken the Coronavirus seriously, and it has tragically taken many lives. At a time like this, we need to pray for those that have it and avoid politicizing it. If our President and First Lady can get COVID-19, clearly anyone can.”The Associated Press reports that Laurie was at an event at the White House on Sept. 26 in which President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. At least nine other people who attended that event — including President Donald Trump — have since tested positive for COVID-19.Many in attendance at the White House event were photographed without masks as well as shaking hands and hugging. 1137
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's skyrocketing gas prices could be driven by "possible market manipulation" by a handful of well-known retailers, according to a new government analysis. In a memo to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, the California Energy Commission said at the end of April the difference between the state's gas prices and the national average increased by more than a dollar — "the highest increase ever seen." After accounting for the state's additional taxes and other program costs, the increase has ranged between 17 cents and 34 cents per gallon since 2015.The agency noted the price jump "roughly matches" the period in 2015 when an explosion at Exxon Mobil's refinery in Torrance crippled production in the state for more than a year. But the refinery has restored normal operations, suggesting other factors are driving up the price of fuel. One possible explanation the commission identified is some retailers are charging higher prices than others "for essentially the same product." The commission noted Chevron, Shell, Exxon, Mobil and 76 have doubled their prices compared to ARCO, unbranded retailers and hypermart locations, which include stations associated with supermarkets or big-box retail stores."While this practice is not necessarily illegal, it may be an effort of a segment of the market to artificially inflate prices to the detriment of California consumers," the commission noted in its report.Agency officials said this type of price increase would normally drive customers to lower-priced competitors. From 2010 to 2017, the commission said the percentage of gasoline sold by Chevron, Shell and 76 retail stores dropped by about 3 percentage points combined. However, the commission noted its preliminary estimates are "imprecise." Agency officials have proposed studying the issue for the next five months and then presenting the governor with a full report.Western States Petroleum Association President Catherine Reheis-Boyd said lots of factors can explain why California's gas prices are higher than the national average, including the state's mandated fuel blend requirements, increasingly high state taxes and regulations that include the Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program."This report provides further evidence of what market experts and government agencies have maintained for years: there are many factors that influence movement in the price of gasoline and diesel, but the primary driver is the dynamics of supply and demand of crude oil," Reheis-Boyd said. 2523
