CLEVELAND — As we’ve seen throughout this pandemic, people on both sides of the mask debate are passionate about where they stand.“It’s very sad that this has become a political issue,” said Sharona Hoffman, a professor of Law and Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University.On Wednesday night, an order from Governor Mike DeWine will take effect, requiring masks in public settings in parts of Ohio, including Ohio's three largest cities of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Ohio, unlike a number of other states, does not have a statewide mandate on wearing masks. The move sparked increased chatter around the claim that these mandates infringe on the rights of Americans.“This shouldn’t be about people’s liberties,” said Hoffman.Government mandates are nothing new.“We have to pay taxes, we have to abide by the speed limit,” said Hoffman.During this pandemic, regulations requiring masks are no different and totally appropriate, according to Hoffman.“This type of regulation is legal, constitutional and very, very sensible,” said Hoffman.One of the main responsibilities of elected officials is to ensure the health and safety of those they serve.“It wouldn’t make sense to even have a government if their hands were tied and they couldn’t take these measures,” said Hoffman.Hoffman said people should be willing to mask-up on their own and not be told to do so.“This should be something that people are very willing to do not only to protect themselves but also to protect other people,” said Hoffman. Others expressed concerns about having to wear a mask out in their yard or walking from their car into a store.“You do have to wear it outside if you cannot consistently stay 6-feet away from other people,” said Hoffman. 1742
Community colleges across the country have been an essential part of higher education. During the pandemic, many are seeing a decline in enrollment as issues like child care and internet access affect students."It's an issue. We did a survey in the spring semester of our students and about 24% of our students said they either had no WiFi access or it was spotty and that’s a quarter of our students," said Rebecca Ashford, President of Chattanooga State Community College. Dr. Ashford says their school enrollment is down by 7%. Chattanooga State Community College even started a technology pantry, similar to a food pantry but instead of food it offers donated laptops and other technology materials to help equip students with online learning."I think the uncertainty of the whole world and situation that we’re in, the demands of family, uncertainty about jobs and the lack of technology access - or just the fear of it because a lot of students are fearful of taking online classes. I think it's just the perfect storm," said Dr. Ashford."A lot of our students are concerned about what should they do. Should I go back to school? Should I stay in school? There's a lot of concerns, [students who] need to go out and make money, maybe someone in their family has lost a job," said Dr. Carole Goldsmith, President of Fresno City College in California. Fresno City College is reporting a 15% decline in enrollment. Like Chattanooga State Community College, Fresno City College students aren't able to take a number of classes that require in-person learning. Classes like welding, science labs and more."Our performing arts. We have a very large theatrical program; dance, song, music and all of those programs we’re not able to bring them back face-to-face so a lot of them unfortunately are dropping out," said Dr. Goldsmith. Dr. Goldsmith says, at the same time, they're seeing some spikes in classes that many students use to transfer to a four-year university, like engineering and math. Students possibly finding it more economical to take the courses online at their local community college than spend the money on a virtual university tuition. "Some of those counts that we’re seeing increase in some of the general education transfer courses is really quite telling and I think as we move forward it may change how we do business for many years to come," said Dr. Goldsmith.The community college has also been loaning out laptops and WiFi hotspots to students who need them. At Chattanooga State, educators are hoping students who've been unable to continue classes know that the school is ready and here for them when they're able to come back. And that, in general, they don't fall too far behind. "We do know that students who take a gap year are, I think it's about 25% or so, less likely to complete a degree. And so, we’ve been really trying to get the message out about not taking a gap year and continuing your education," said Dr. Ashford. 2968

Then rage overcomes you.In a Facebook post, Cody Vickers documented a similar scenario that happened in Columbus while he was at a construction job. His photo shows a butt-naked man bathing in water spewing from a broken water main near North High Street in Clintonville, the Columbus Dispatch reported.He said, “It’s not every day you see a naked man come out of his house screaming and cussing ... then comes off the porch and finishes taking his shower where the excavator hit the line," in a Facebook post that has since gone viral, getting 137,000 shares and more than 14,000 likes."I was in the f****** shower. I got soap all over me," said Vickers, repeating what the man said when he was met with a trench and a fountain of water. He said the man slung his towel off and ran down the steps, across the sidewalk and over the trench where he met his temporary shower.The Columbus Dispatch reported that the construction crew hit an unmarked line and the man came outside seconds later with a towel around his waist."I couldn't believe he did that. Complaints are growing nationwide about workplace safety issues related to coronavirus. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, has received more than 6,500 nationwide on a federal level since February.One trial lawyer who works in employment law says she expects the number of complains will keep going up.“Where I really think the numbers are going to escalate is in the retaliation world, where employees bring issues to their employers' attention about failing to implement appropriate administrative or engineering controls or social distancing measures and then they feel that they have suffered an adverse employment action as a result of bringing this to their employer's attention,” said trial lawyer Laura Lawless.OSHA recently updated its guidance on COVID-19-related workplace safety. It now suggests wherever possible and feasible employers should require masks at work.This guidance is something Lawless says everyone was waiting on. She says for states or cities that already had a mask mandate it was easier to enforce at work already, but for states that don't have this mandate, it was harder until now.“At least you can now turn to CDC guidance and OSHA guidance as an employer and say look even if you disagree with us for a political reason or personal expression reason, we're following the guidance from agencies that are meant to look out for your health and safety,” said Lawless.Still, there are concerns OSHA isn't going far enough in other areas. One big criticism among employee protective organizations, workers organizations and unions is that OSHA’s guidance on COVID-19 isn't a regulation and doesn't really have any teeth.Virginia and Oregon are two states looking to fill in the gap with their own worker protections.If you see issues in your workplace, the employment lawyer recommends being reasonable in your approach and not getting too emotional in your reaction.
