SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,490 new COVID-19 infections and 14 new deaths, marking 104,958 total cases and 1,151 total deaths.Saturday marked the fourth consecutive day that more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,867 cases -- a record -- reported Friday, 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 12th day with more than 1,000 new cases. It is just the sixth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.Of 27,599 tests reported Saturday, 9% returned positive.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. "Through no fault of their own, COVID-19 highest risk entities have to stop indoor operations. While we know this step is vital to help slow the spread in our community, we want to step up and help those impacted..."Our goal for the million is to provide relief to restaurants, gyms and other entities that have been directly impacted by the indoor closures due to our county's purple tier status. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth.The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. We see the unique contributions that they bring to the campus; that we understand the many challenges or systemic barriers that are often placed in their way," said Ashanti Hands, the college's vice president of student services. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott announced litigation today against opioid manufacturers including Purdue Pharma for what she called their role in the country's ongoing opioid addiction crisis.The federal lawsuit also names members of the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma. Elliott's lawsuit is aimed at forcing the defendants to fund rehabilitation and drug-education programs in the city and recoup the funds the city has spent on medical treatment for opioid abuse and homelessness caused by opioid abuse.Purdue Pharma officials could not be reached for immediate comment on the lawsuit.With the lawsuit, Elliott said she expects to join more cities, counties and states to form a multi-district litigation.``Opioid manufacturers have profited handsomely from the human suffering they intentionally inflicted through manipulation and deceit,''Elliott said. ``While San Diego will long deal with the destructive consequences of their greed, we intend to hold them accountable for funding drug treatment and education programs that will protect the health and safety of San Diegans.''Elliott's office plans to prosecute the pharmaceutical companies and the Sackler family for allegedly violating the state's ``unfair competition''law and for violating the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
