As disinfecting wipes and sprays fly off store shelves, companies are looking for new ways to keep surfaces coronavirus-free. Some are looking at repurposing UV light technology, a cleaning solution that’s been used for decades.Ava Robotics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology partnered on a project to create a robot that uses UV-C light to disinfect large areas.“It was about a 4,000 square foot space. It was able to disinfect that in less than 30 minutes,” said Youssef Saleh with Ava Robotics. The purpose -- cleaning large, busy spaces of virus and bacteria, specifically coronavirus.“UV is not new. Robots are not new themselves,” Saleh said.“It's actually been in practice in hospitals for probably four decades plus,” said Dr. Eric Hill, the Chair of Emergency Services at Medical Center of Aurora. It’s usually used to sterilize rooms.“Anything that the light hits, it can kill. So it has to be in direct contact with the light beam and it has to be in contact for a certain period of time,” Hill said.“There are three factors of effectiveness of UV light, the first is the power itself,” Saleh explained. “Then there's the distance to the object that you're trying to disinfect, and then there is the amount of time.”"We cannot see it, it's the same kind of UV radiation you’d get from the sun,” Hill said. “It works by destroying the DNA and the RNA of the organism. And it doesn't affect just viruses, it affects bacteria, viruses, mold, and spores.”While it can kill germs, it can also do damage to us. UV light plays a role in diseases like skin cancer. “It is dangerous for humans to be in direct contact with it,” Dr. Hill said. That’s why the project with Ava Robotics and MIT also factors in safety for humans.“Safety elements have to be part of the solution, thought through, and understood,” Saleh said. The team is working on making the robot more adaptable to changing spaces, like warehouses, and potentially other large spaces like grocery stores and schoolsBut Hill says UV light isn’t a complete replacement for traditional cleaning methods.“It does not take the place of things like wiping something down,” he said. “But after you do that...adding in a UV light system can really hit in a broad area...and get all the microorganisms that were in there.”Hill also warns consumers that are interested in this to look at products closely.“Several hundred dollars is realistic for a good UV light system,” he explained. “We have seen much more of a demand of it, if you go on Amazon the amount of UV light products I’ve seen pushed out is incredible.” 2591

As a jazz musician who’s traveled the world with some of the best-known artists in the industry, your first assumption might be that Daryl Davis’ claim to fame is from being on stage. But the African American racial justice activist is better known for the work he’s done over the years helping Ku Klux Klan members leave behind a life of racism and white supremacy. It started back in the early 1990s when Davis arranged a meeting with a former wizard of the KKK. At the time, he did not know Davis was Black.Over the years, the two forged an unlikely relationship with one another. Davis would regularly be invited to Klan rallies across the country. He didn’t agree with their message, but he wasn’t there to join the Klan, he was there to help persuade members’ opinions on race.“You have ignorance and if you don’t cure that ignorance, that turns into fear because we fear things we don’t understand and if you don’t turn that fear, it escalates to hatred, because we hate the things that frighten us,” the 64-year-old explained.Having spent decades with members of the KKK, Davis doesn’t argue or even get frustrated with those he meets. Instead, Davis tries to plant a seed that he nurtures and helps grow over time. That seed, he says, is breaking down barriers that exist between KKK members and African Americans. As Davis spends time getting to known Klan members, he says that over time, many start to see him for more than the color of his skin, they see him as human.“If you have cancer in the bone, you can’t rub topical cream on top, you have to drill to the bone and put chemo or radiation to the source. And that’s what we have to do with racism. Go to the source, which is ignorance. It’s not inherited, it’s a learned behavior,” he said.To date, Davis has helped more than 200 Klan members leave the white supremacist group. Many send Davis their robes after they abandon the KKK. But Davis is quick to note that he never convinces anyone to leave.“I didn’t convert anybody, but I am the impetus for over 200 people to convert themselves. I planted the seed so they could come to the conclusion that, ‘I might need to be rethinking what I’m thinking,’” he added. As for the current state of racial unrest gripping the country, Davis sees this as a moment of reckoning where real institutional change on racism is possible.“We have never had this many white people join in our cause. This is a major change. We are turning another page in the history of this country and we have not turned a page in a long time,” said Davis. 2549

An 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday night, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quake was centered 16 km west of Jacó, Costa Rica, at a depth of 10 km, according to the USGS. It gave the quake preliminary magnitude of 6.8, but later downgraded it.The observatory at the Universidad Nacional Costa Rica said the earthquake measured 6.9.Jacó lies southwest of Costa Rica's capital, San Jose, and is part of the region of Puntarenas, on the Pacific Coast.Emergency response agencies activatedThree people suffered fatal heart attacks that coincided with the time of the earthquake -- two in Jacó and one person further south in Coronado -- according to a statement from Costa Rica's presidency. It said the country's Judicial Investigation Agency was investigating the deaths. At least one building in Jacó had been evacuated due to apparent damage and there were reports of walls collapsing and objects falling in other parts of the country, but there were no reports of any further injuries, the statement said.Costa Rica's hospitals were functioning normally and minor power outages had been quickly resolved, it said, with the quake felt most severely in the provincial districts of Quepos, Parrita and Garabito -- of which Jacó is capital. The presidency said that emergency response agencies had been activated and remained on alert following the quake.President Luis Guillermo Solís earlier tweeted that no tsunami warning had been issued.Police called for calm. The Fuerza Publica warned on Twitter that there were landslides on the road between Jaco to Tárcoles, further north.  1634

ANDERSON, Ind. -- An armored truck spilled money on the interstate after it hit several potholes on I-69 early Saturday morning and crashed into a ditch. The crash happened near Anderson around 1 a.m. local time. The Garda armored delivery truck driver told the deputies with the Madison County Sheriff's Office that he hit several potholes which caused him to lose control of the vehicle and he overcorrected, hitting a guardrail and sliding into a ditch. The rolled several times before it landed on its side. Deputies say some money was on the road after the crash but most of it remained secured in the armored delivery vehicle. The driver and his passenger were treated for minor injuries on the scene.  The armored truck delivery company sent another truck to the scene to recover the money and the truck.  842

Andrea Constand, the key witness in the retrial of Bill Cosby on indecent assault charges, testified Friday morning that she drank wine and took three blue pills at Cosby's urging in January 2004, then lost consciousness and, sometime later, was "jolted awake" to find the entertainer sexually assaulting her."Were you able to verbalize and tell him to stop?" state prosecutor Kristen Feden asked Constand."No," she replied. "I wanted it to stop. I couldn't say anything. I was trying to get my hands to move, my legs to move and the message just wasn't getting there. I was weak, I was limp and I couldn't fight him off.""I was really humiliated. I was in shock. And I was really confused," Constand added.Constand's testimony came on the ninth day of Cosby's retrial on three charges of aggravated indecent assault. He has pleaded not guilty.Leading up to Constand's recollection of the alleged assault, the former Temple University employee traced her relationship with Cosby, whom she said she met while handling operations of the school's women's basketball team. Cosby was an active Temple alumnus.Constand offered brief details of seven social encounters she had with Cosby before the alleged assault, including one in which she said he put his hand on her thigh and another when she said he tried to "unbutton my button on my pants.""I mentioned that I wasn't here for that, and he respectfully stopped and we never talked about it again," Constand said of the latter incident. "He got the picture."After that encounter -- but before the early 2004 incident -- "I had no question about my ability to fend off a person that was hitting on me or making a sexual advance on me," Constand testified.Constand began her testimony Friday as prosecutors this week opened their case: by acknowledging that Cosby paid Constand .38 million as part of a civil settlement. She said she has no further legal action pending against Cosby, who, in that case, admitted he got prescription sedatives to give to women with whom he wanted to have sex.Feden is expected to continue questioning Constand early Friday afternoon, after a short court recess.  2157
