SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Low inventory and historically low interest rates are driving California's red-hot real estate market.According to the California Association of Realtors, home sales climbed to their highest level in more than a decade, and the median home price set another high for the fourth straight month.It's making it harder for buyers to buy low but easier for sellers looking to sell high."With everything shutting down, I just figured now was the time to do it," said Kristi Gonzalez.After a career in the San Diego area, Gonzalez is retiring, moving out of state, and about to cash out."I think now is a great time to sell," she said. "There's very low inventory. It will make it easier for me."If you've paid attention to California's real estate landscape, the market is hot in many cities."We're seeing about a 10 percent increase in the last four to five months, and that's insane considering where we were," said Jordan Beal, president of the Beal Group.Beal said the San Diego area sees an influx of buyers from New York, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles."When you look at the fact that money is as cheap as it is, people who have been able to keep their jobs combined with a lot of tech people who can now work remotely and see San Diego as really cheap market compared to the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York, I don't see our market slowing down anytime soon," Beal said.The same thing is happening as you head north into the Central Valley."Inventory is historically low, interest rates are historically low, and it's just kind of the perfect storm with that whole supply and demand," said Ronda Newport, president of the Bakersfield Association of Realtors.Newport said the Bakersfield market is on fire.It's a combination of locals looking to take advantage of interest rates and those from wealthier ZIP codes trying to get out of a big city."If you have an LA buyer or a Bay Area buyer, and if they sell their home, you know a small little home for what they sell for in that area, and they move to Bakersfield, and they see what they can get for the money here, it's an easy decision," she said."We are just breaking all sorts of records," said Bruce Blair of Blair Properties.Blair's been selling homes along the Central Coast since the 70s.He said some people are buying houses they've never seen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than two weeks before Halloween, people across the county are getting creative and building candy chutes in hopes of a safer version of door-to-door trick-or-treating.In the yard of the Witthoft home in Lakeside, a large display stands in testament to a four-decade old family tradition of Halloween fright."We love Halloween. It's a fun holiday, a scary holiday. Seeing people dressed up. It's a lot of fun," said Chris Witthoft.Witthoft says part of that fun is handing out candy. That tradition, like so many things this year, is wrapped in uncertainty because of the pandemic."We've done it for so long. Just don't want to let the kids down," said Witthoft.So Witthoft and her family decided to build their own solution: two candy chutes created from PVC pipes and then painted. Witthoft and other family members will push the candy down the chute, staying six feet from the kids."All of us will have gloves and masks on, with social distancing circles along our fence," said Witthoft.Witthoft says the line to get to the candy will be socially distanced, while the chute and nearby areas will be constantly wiped down.To the west, in Rolando Village, Amberosia Vivar has designs on her own candy slide."Will make it out of PVC pipe ... It brings a little excitement for families stuck inside for months. I know my kids have been looking forward to Halloween for months," said Vivar.Across social media, ABC 10news has seen countless examples of San Diegans creating similar candy chutes, but is it safe? County guidelines recommend against any door-to-door trick-or-treating, a chief concern is kids congregating to get the candy. That 'congregating' is also a potential issue with the candy chutes. It's something the Witthofts and Vivar say they'll be watching out for."We can remind the kids, remind the families, maintain your distance," said Vivar."We want to be as safe as possible but still want to carry on our tradition for the kids," said Witthoft. 1995

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It all started when La Jolla Shores resident, Penne Horn, had a birthday coming up."It started as a joke. My son asked what I wanted for my birthday and without any thought the words flew out of my mouth 'I want an ice cream maker,'" Horn said. The rest you could say is history.Since the day she received her wishlist item, she like many of us, spent time indoors with her new addition. "I started making ice cream. I just had too much of it and thought there's gotta be something I can do with this," Horn described. So she began to give it away to neighbors. It was so good that nearby residents with a sweet tooth wanted more and insisted on paying her, when a light a bulb went off. "I was hearing stories of families who got dogs in beginning of COVID, then lost their job and couldn't feed family let alone their dogs. I thought I will make the ice cream and ask people for donations. They'll donate and I'll buy dog food, and take it down to St. James church where they'll distribute it." Then new ideas kept getting added to the mix."One lady came to me and said I'll donate whatever if you make an ice cream named after my dog." Then, Twoee's Howling Good Ice Cream was born, named after her own sweet furry companion. "I draw all these different characters of dogs and name the ice cream after their dog."Horn's a former member of the Scripps and Humane Society boards, and she's always given back to the community. "It's part of my life, it's part of who I am."This time around, her community service was something new, a bit more sweet and born out of a pandemic. "There's a little silver lining if you look for it, I never would've started this if it hadn't been for the pandemic. There's good in everything." The Del Cerro and Torrey Highlands are the best San Diego neighborhoods for renters, according to HotPads.Analysts evaluated rental size and price per square foot. San Diego’s median rental size is 1,154 feet, and renters can expect to spend .32 per square foot of space.The median rental size in Torrey Highlands is 2,033 square feet, at .14 per square foot, HotPads reported. Del Cerro residents pay .77 per square foot, with a median rental size of 1,710 square feet.
