ALPINE (CNS) - A 7-year old tiger at Alpine's Lions Tigers & Bears animal rescue facility died of injuries inflicted by a fellow tiger, it was announced Tuesday.Maverick suffered fatal injuries after he and the other tiger -- Moka - - were accidentally allowed to come into contact with one another on Monday. The animals were living in separate enclosures, according to Lions Tigers & Bears founder Bobbi Brink, who said no staff or visitors were harmed.The staff veterinarian assessed both animals afterward. Moka has scratches, but no serious injuries."This was a human error, and one we're so deeply heartbroken about," Brink said. "When caring for a 400-plus-pound apex predator, layered safety measures must be established, and this is exactly what we've implemented at our accredited sanctuary since our founding."Unfortunately, one of our safety measures was mistakenly missed, and because these magnificent, massive animals are wild, their reactions to their surroundings -- especially new situations -- are unpredictable," she said.According to Brink, the nonprofit organization regularly conducts staff safety trainings, including one on emergency protocols last weekend. She said the protocols will be reviewed extensively this week.Maverick was rescued on April 20, 2014, at 9 months old. He was born in captivity and purchased illegally by someone who did not have the proper licensing to own an exotic animal. He was 86."Alan was the strongest and kindest man I ever knew," his wife, Leslie Bean, said in a statement. "He was the love of my life and I miss him dearly." After dozens of puppies were found in rural Pottawattamie County, Iowa with no food and water before being rescued Sunday, authorities ramped up their investigation into Young Gunz Kennel.They obtained a search warrant and confiscated items for several hours Tuesday.Sheriff deputies and animal control personnel hauled away a large number of kennels that were at the unlicensed facility, which was used for obedience and hunting training, as well as dog breeding. Investigators could also be seen snapping photos and collecting additional evidence that they could find at the site, which housed as many as 50 dogs before many of them were found inside their kennels severely malnourished. A total of four dogs have now been found dead, and 10 are missing.Copper was one of the dogs that was rescued on Sunday. When his owner Wil Beach picked him up, Copper had lost 20 pounds and was covered in feces. "He was very scared but still in high spirits, he was the same dog emotionally when I got him (back) than when I dropped him off,” says Beach.Beach says he took Copper and a 0 check to owner Dustin Young in January after high praises from friends. After briefly becoming a Category 2 storm on Monday, Hurricane Sally weakened back to a Category 1 storm overnight as it threatens to swamp Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle.In its 8 p.m. CT update, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday that Sally currently has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is currently moving toward the Mississippi and Alabama shores at 2 mph.The NHC said the hurricane is about 70 miles south of Mobile, Alabama, and 70 miles southwest of Pensacola, Florida.At 9 p.m. CT, a sustained wind of 58 mph with a gust of 73 mph was reported at Petit Bois Island, Mississippi, the NHC said.The overnight weakening is a welcome sign to forecasters. On Monday evening, NHC forecasted that Sally could produce winds of up to 110 mph before it made landfall.NHC warned that even though the storm slowed down, it will still produce a "life-threatening" storm surge in the central Gulf Coast region of the U.S. The NHC says "historic" flash flooding is possible as it makes landfall.The agency expects the Alabama coast to see the most flooding, including Mobile Bay.Hurricane conditions are expected as early as Tuesday, and the storm is currently projected to make landfall by Wednesday morning. 1239
