WASHINGTON (AP) — A report from the Labor Department's inspector general says nearly 3,000 federal workers have filed compensation claims for contracting COVID-19 on the job. And that number is expected to double by early next month. Through mid-June, families of 48 federal workers also had filed death claims. The report only reflects the number of federal workers or their families who filed claims by June 16 — not the number who have contracted the coronavirus or died from it. Reports from individual agencies indicate the number of infections and deaths is much higher. VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - A man accused of killing his 7-year-old daughter at the family's Oceanside home pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder, assault and child cruelty charges.Pedro Araujo, 27, is charged in last Wednesday's slaying of Mariah Araujo. Police have not commented on the cause of her death, but the criminal complaint indicates that a knife was used.Mariah was stabbed at least 10 times in the neck and upper body, prosecutors said. She also had defensive wounds from the attack.In addition to murder, the defendant is charged with assault on a child in regard to Mariah, and misdemeanor child cruelty involving her 6-year- old sister.RELATED: 7-year-old found dead in Oceanside home, father arrestedHe faces 26 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges.The children's grandmother made an emergency call shortly after 11 a.m. to report that she had just gone to the family's house in the 3500 block of Las Vegas Drive to pick up Mariah and her sister but had been unable to find the older girl, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.The woman reported that her son -- the girls' father -- had been evasive about the whereabouts of his elder daughter and had blood on him, Bussey said.Officers went to the residence near Emerald Isle Golf Course and searched it, finding the victim's body in a bathroom. WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans are proposing changes to police procedures and accountability, according to a draft of a bill obtained by The Associated Press.The JUSTICE Act — Just and Unifying Solutions To Invigorate Communities Everywhere Act of 2020 — would establish an enhanced use-of-force database, restrictions on chokeholds and new training and commissions to study law enforcement and race.In addition to the use-of-force database, the JUSTICE Act would also begin tracking — but would not ban — the use of no-knock warrants. In March, a Louisville woman named Breonna Taylor was killed when police entered her home on such a warrant.The JUSTICE Act is the most ambitious GOP policing proposal in years. It's a direct response to the massive public protests over the death of George Floyd and other black Americans.The package is set to be introduced Wednesday. As the outlines emerged, Democrats said it didn't go far enough.The Justice in Policing Act, a bill introduced by Democrats in the House last week, would introduce more sweeping changes, including a ban on police chokeholds. The Democrats' bill would also amend federal law to make it easier to charge police officers with civil rights violations.The introduction of the GOP bill will be introduced a day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at changing police practices. Trump's order calls on police departments to utilize social workers in some emergency calls. WARREN, Mich. – A suspect is in custody for the execution-style murders of three people in Michigan, including a 6-year-old boy, his father and the dad’s fiancée.Last Friday, a person of interest in the heinous murder of the child and 28-year-old woman was being questioned by officers, according to Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer.Warren police say they will present their case to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office Tuesday morning.According to Dwyer, officers did a wellness check at an Otis Avenue home in Warren around 10 a.m. on Oct. 1. The front door was open, but there was no sign of a forced entry.That’s when police discovered the bodies of the boy and woman, both fatally shot execution-style in the basement, Dwyer said.Warren police are working with Detroit police after it was confirmed the 6-year-old victim was the son of a 31-year-old man whose body was found in a burned-out vehicle on Detroit’s east side. The 28-year-old woman is the girlfriend, police confirmed.According to Detroit Major Crimes Commander Eric Decker, officers responded to the vehicle fire report around 2 a.m. Further investigation revealed the vehicle was a rental car, which was then used to identify the 31-year-old victim and trace his connection to the home in Warren.The man’s initial cause of death was from a gunshot wound. The vehicle was burned after the shooting.Dwyer said the department has secured video from around the Otis Avenue neighborhood, which will be later released. Authorities have also executed a search warrant on the home and have recovered evidence to test for possible suspect identification.Federal agents are being asked to join the investigation as Warren police anticipate seeking the death penalty in the case.“When you murder an innocent 6-year-old baby, you deserve the death penalty.” Dwyer said. “It was a terrible, terrible scene.
