She was appointed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and served 27 years on the court.Ginsburg's family says her dying wish was that whoever is elected president in November should name her replacement. However, President Donald Trump said he will nominate her replacement, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the Senate will hold a vote before election day.In an interview Monday, Trump said that he plans to nominate Ginsburg's replacement "Friday or Saturday." 1387

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is back working at the Supreme Court building in her chambers, the court's public information officer said Tuesday afternoon.Ginsburg was not on the bench for Tuesday's non-argument session earlier in the day, per a previous Supreme Court announcement.Last week, Ginsburg, 85, fell in her office and fractured three ribs, but by the end of the week had been released from George Washington University Hospital, where she had been admitted Thursday for observation and treatment.Supreme Court Public Information Officer Kathleen Arberg had said earlier Tuesday that Ginsburg was continuing to improve and was working from home in the morning.Ginsburg is the Supreme Court's oldest justice and has previously survived two forms of cancer and a procedure to have a stent placed in her right coronary artery. However, in July, Ginsburg said she hopes to remain in her position beyond 2020."I'm now 85," Ginsburg said?at the time. "My senior colleague, Justice John Paul Stevens, he stepped down when he was 90, so think I have about at least five more years."She was nominated to the highest court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton, and has become a cultural icon for progressives in recent years -- acquiring the nickname "Notorious RBG," in reference to the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. 1324

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) – A man who reportedly tried to hit his girlfriend with a pickaxe was taken into custody after a standoff at a La Jolla Shores home.At around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, San Diego police officers were called to a house in the 2500 block of Ellentown Road after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident.10News learned a man inside reportedly threatened his girlfriend with a pickaxe, prompting her to leave. The unidentified man remained inside and refused police orders to come out."When we first got here, he was not communicating with us, he was just inside the house, yelling and screaming and banging against the wall," said SDPD Captain Tina Williams. While officers tried to persuade him to surrender, sections of Ellentown Road were shut down due to the police activity. At times the man appeared in the windows of the home holding the ax and knives, according to Williams. He also started a debris fire on top of his stove, sending smoke billowing from the house. Shortly after 1 p.m., the man went to the backyard, where police took him into custody without incident, according to Williams. The man was booked on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence battery. The victim was not seriously injured.Williams said the incident was not the first time police had been called to the house. "Earlier this week, we did respond out here... he was out in the middle of the street causing an altercation," she said. He was gone by the time police arrived.  1562

Jason Coffman approached a host of reporters' microphones on Thursday, and with a quiver in his voice, shared the news he had feared receiving all morning: His eldest son was among the 12 people killed?in Wednesday night's shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California."His name was Cody Coffman, my firstborn son," said Coffman, his voice breaking as he wiped tears away with a tissue."Oh God ... oh son, I love you so much," he said, clutching his chest. "Oh heavenly father, just please be with him."Cody had just turned 22, and was in the process of talking to recruiters so he could join the Army, Coffman said. He was also the head umpire for a local baseball league. He touched so many people, his father said.Cody left behind three brothers under the age of 10. The family is expecting a sister later this month."Cody was the big brother that my kids need," Coffman said. "He was so excited to have his first sister, and now she'll never know. ... Oh Cody, I love you son." 1028

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors are calling for more safety measures after surveillance video captured a fiery collision at an intersection in Jamul.A week ago, just before 5 p.m., Marc Burnett was opening up his off-road racing shop along Campo Road, when he heard it."I heard the skid marks hitting, and then I heard the boom," said Burnett. He ran outside and was greeted by flames."I just saw flames in the air. I saw a lot of flames. I saw the guy on the ground. He was on fire," said Burnett.Burnett raced back inside."I got the fire extinguisher, and had to put the motorcycle out -- and him," said Burnett.Burnett says the motorcycle driver, a man in his 30s, suffered serious burns to his hands and legs, but survived."He was very lucky that he survived," said Burnett.Burnett even more amazed when he looked at his surveillance video. In it you can see the truck pulling into the intersection from Maxfield Road and stop, before the eastbound motorcycle slams into the side of the truck, exploding into flames."Very scary to see that video. Didn’t know it was that bad until I saw it," said Burnett.Sadly, it was not unfamiliar.Burnett, who’s been in the area for more than 15 years, says he’s seen the aftermath of some eight serious accidents at that intersection, including a person killed crossing the road."It’s kind of a blind turn ... People coming out where the truck coming out ... It's hard to judge," said Burnett.Burnett is now lobbying for a traffic light at that intersection, which is often busy with casino traffic."Drivers are passing semi trucks on the turn. It's dangerous. If there was a light, people would have to slow down," said Burnett. The CHP says they investigation into the accident is ongoing.ABC 10News reached out to county officials about the neighbors' concerns and are waiting to hear back. 1841
