San Diego County handles approximately 9,000 cases of elder and dependent adult abuse every year. Elder abuse is defined by the Centers for Disease Control as "an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult." Types of elder abuse include: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, neglect, or financial abuse. The county sees about 450 cases a year of criminal elder abuse cases, according to Paul Greenwood with the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit of the District Attorney’s Office.  The District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit prosecutes crimes against seniors, as well as addresses the special needs of elderly victims. They meet with seniors to teach them how to protect themselves, train bank and credit union employees on protecting financial assets of elderly customers, and train first responders to be aware of issues involving elders.  The National Council on Aging? said approximately 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some type of elder abuse. However, knowledge about elder abuse lags behind the fields of child abuse and domestic violence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Star Trek fans got the surprise of a lifetime at Comic-Con Hall H Saturday, as many A-List stars made unannounced appearances. Among them were Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco and Jeri Ryan.Fifty years to the day after the first moon landing, Trekkers got an intergalactic treat at San Diego Comic-Con. At the panel, fans got to see a sneak preview of "Star Trek: Discovery The Third Season" and the new animated series "Star Trek: Below Deck". The biggest applause came when Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard appeared on stage. Stwart returns to the franchise in the new series, "Star Trek: Picard," a story about the Captain after "Star Trek: Next Generation"."I knew that something very unusual was going to happen, and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- For the first time in decades, NASA is moving closer to sending people to the moon, or even Mars. Naval Base San Diego is playing a key role in that process.This week the USS John P. Murtha left Naval Base San Diego to test recovery efforts of NASA’s mock Orion capsule.“We’re going to ensure that once it comes down, once it hits that water, that everything from then on is totally safe,” says Retired Navy Pilot and President of the San Diego Air & Space Museum Jim Kidrick.The amphibious ship sends a crew into the Pacific Ocean, then uses smaller boats to guide the capsule back to the USS Murtha.The Orion has an environmental control system, a heat shield that can withstand 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, radiation control and parachutes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating 65 years of their Leadership AKAdemy. The program mentors a group of teenage girls every year. The AKAdemy ends with a memorable ball. The AKA San Diego chapter has one mission: encourage scholastic achievement, strong ethical standards, and "be a service to all mankind." For over six decades, those values have been used to mentor girls around the county. During the 1950s, the chapter held its first debutante ball to expose young girls to cultural opportunities. It was historically the debut of young ladies ages 16 to 19 as official members of society. "Now it has grown into a leadership academy to where we equip the young people with life skills," says Chapter President, Deborah Davis-Gillespie. The teens attend different workshops, like college readiness and etiquette, each week for the months' long program. This year's Leadership AKAdemy has a total of 16 girls. "I'm just really happy to be a part of the whole process and the whole experience," says participant Kennedy Harris. Community service is also at the top of the list for the program. The girls participate in community events like the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the MLK Day of Service in Balboa Park. The goal is to help others and for the girls to have an appreciation for the communities in which they live. "It's really nice to be able to make those connections early on in my life," says participant Sanai Mitchell. After months of workshops, events, and dance practice with their escorts for the ball, the girls are now just a few weeks away from their big night. They will be presented to their families and community as young women, ready to take on the world. "It's an evolution, its life-changing and they walk away a better person than when they came in," says Davis- Gillespie.This year's AKA Leadership AKAdemy will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Legacy Hotel and Resort in Mission Valley. 2000

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The fight continues fort tenants in Oak Park who say they soon won't be able to pay their rent if it continues to go up. The group met with the San Diego Housing Commission Friday morning. Many of the tenants are seniors living on a fixed income. Some of them say they've already seen their rent increased twice this year. "There doesn't seem to be any protections for people like us," says one of the tenants who spoke during Friday's board meeting. "We're on a fixed income; we get a two percent raise every year. My rent was raised by 50 percent."Olive Wood Gardens is a low-income housing complex for seniors and those who are disabled. Tenants say they are scared for their future. "I don't know what to do now," says Kathy Blackstock. "I don't think I can go back to homelessness."They're not only asking help from the San Diego Housing Commission; the tenants are hoping the state would pass Assembly Bill 1482. Last week, a rally was held outside of the complex in support of the bill. It would make it illegal for property owners to raise rents more than seven percent in one year. The Senate Committee is currently reviewing the bill. The San Diego Housing Commission board says they've referred the tenants' comments and information to the staff.
