SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Wildfires that have claimed at least five lives and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes continue to blaze around California.Three major collections of fires are threatening tens of thousands of homes in the San Francisco Bay Area and central California.According to CNN, Vacaville — a city located between Sacramento and the Bay Area — is among the cities hardest hit by the wildfires.More evacuations are expected as hot and gusty weather continues into Friday.Daniel Berlant, the assistant deputy director of Cal Fire, says that the 22 major wildfires that are currently burning have burned more than 600,000 acres of forest.Officials believe that most of the wildfires were started by lightning and have been exacerbated by a historic heatwave and dry conditions.It wasn’t immediately clear whether the fatalities included a Pacific Gas & Electric utility worker who was found dead Wednesday in a vehicle in the Vacaville area. Also, in central California, a pilot on a water-dropping mission in western Fresno County died Wednesday morning when his helicopter crashed. (KGTV) — Dos Desperados brewing in San Marcos was headed for a banner year until the coronavirus outbreak hit."We had all of our vats full and of course we had to shut down," said owner Steve Munson. "It's not a killer yet, We're trying to survive until the end of the year."Sales plummeted in the tasting room and distribution. Munson had to cut his staff of eight to two, even letting his own daughter go. It got even more complicated in early July, when the governor eliminated indoor service for bars and restaurants.But when Munson approached the City of San Marcos to get an outdoor permit, he says it went lightning-quick, something Munson never expected.San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones says it happened fast because the city already had the framework in place to streamline outdoor permits, with no fees. The city actually approved it in late May. Jones credits Innovate 78, a collaborative effort between the five cities that line the 78: San Marcos, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Escondido, and Vista. They've been working together on the economy for years."If you are not looking forward to what could happen next, you're not really planning," Jones said. "So we try to plan for the unknown, and I really believe that has come from COVID."Innovate 78 now plans to send a letter to Gov. SARASOTA Co., Fla. — A brawl between two moms at a school bus stop landed both in the hospital.One of those mothers was Tiffani Cruz. She was recently released from the hospital.“It was self-defense over an incident that made no sense," she said.While North Port Police say it started over an argument about parenting, Cruz claims she and the other mother have had issues before. She says two weeks ago, she confronted that mom for yelling at another child at the bus stop. But Tuesday morning, their verbal arguments went too far.“My heart was racing!” said Eithan Cruz, who is of no relation to Tiffani Cruz. The child and his brother, Bairon Velazquez, witnessed the fight from the back window of their school bus.“Her face was bleeding and stuff,” Eithan said.“I looked away," Bairon said..Cruz admits she hit the other mom with her mug. Police have not identified the other woman. “I went to run and that’s when she picked up the glass, ran at me and stabbed me twice in my arm, once at my wrist and in back of my shoulder," Cruz said.Both parents ended up in the hospital, but paramedics airlifted the other woman to the hospital with a serious cut to her throat.“She got this close to my face nudged me with her nose and when she nudged me with her nose— it was her fist going up so my fist was going up," Cruz said when asked why she felt she acted in self-defense.Sarasota County Schools is offering counselors after several dozen elementary-aged students witnessed the violent fight.“I regret the whole incident, there’s no reason it should have happened. Sears Holdings will close another 63 Kmart and Sears stores following the 2017 holiday shopping season.On Thursday, the company made the announcement to employees at the affected stores, which span 26 states.The closings affect 45 Kmart stores and 18 Sears stores. (KGTV) -Business owners in San Ysidro worry that yet another month of restrictions on non-essential travel between the US, Mexico, and Canada could close them for good.For the eighth month in a row, the land borders between the United States and its neighboring countries to the north and south will remain closed to non-essential travel to help limit the spread of COVID-19.Monday U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed the extension would last through at least December 21st.Geneva Gamez and her family run Tacos La Fronterra in San Ysidro. "It's kind of been a roller coaster ever since. Everything keeps changing," said Gamez. The agreement continues the hold on tourism and recreational trips, but essential business and trade are not affected. Crossing for educational or medical reasons is also permitted. "You don't get much traffic down there unless somebody is going into Mexico or coming back from Mexico," said Gamez.Gustavo De La Fuente is the executive director of the Smart Border Coalition. He said the impact of the restrictions is far-reaching." You're looking at a little over 700 businesses that could close definitely, and that's actually very worrisome," said De La Fuente. The holiday season is when many of the business owners make most of their money."This is the time of the year when 80% or more of their sales are coming for the entire year, their sales are most of their sales are concentrated in these last 5, 6 weeks of the year," said De La Fuente. Gamez hopes people remember the family-owned businesses when they're doing their holiday shopping. "It's affecting part of the San Diego community that's somehow you know isolated, cause it's so close to the border and it's often forgotten, if people could just make the effort if they can, to drive down there or somehow support small businesses in the area, they'd be doing a lot of good for that part of the community." 1946
