SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Major decisions that could boost - or deal a real blow - to Republican candidates running for state offices about to be made in San Diego.It's because the California G.O.P. Convention kicks off Friday at the Sheraton Harbor Island. About 1,000 Republican delegates will be voting on a variety of endorsements for this year's ballot.G.O.P. gubernatorial candidates like Travis Allen and John Cox will attend, hoping to earn enough delegate votes for the party's endorsement for this year's election.The party is focussed only on state offices and initiatives - such as repealing the gas tax, said Cynthia Bryant, the state party's executive director.This is San Diego's second major political convention leading up to the June primary. The Democrats held their statewide convention here in February - with a who's who of national politicians.It was also the site of major news when the party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her bid for re-election.The big difference for Republicans is that the party will not be taking up major federal issues like gun rights and immigration, Bryant said. The state party also won't be adopting a platform. Instead, Republicans will be focussing on the big decisions in the state - like repealing the recent 12 cent per gallon gas tax hike.They'll also be endorsing candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and attorney general. Still, Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego, says a lot of the decisions made could shape whether the Republicans can recruit new members. "Is this going to be a red meat crowd that really responds only to the visceral issues of immigrations? Or is it going to be a more strategic party that responds to issues that could help Republicans expand their base?" Kousser said. There are some closely watched congressional elections in San Diego County, including who will replace Republican Congressman Darrell Issa in the 49th district, and whether G.O.P Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It has been over six months since a water main break spilled thousands of gallons of water into North Park streets, but some homeowners are still dealing with the aftermath.Jonathan Head has owned a triplex on Idaho street for almost twenty years."There's two buildings," Head said. "It was built in [the] 1940s."Back in October, a water main broke near his property. His tenants started to text him early that morning on October 4th. "It made my heart drop... it was like a river," Head said. While the water did not enter the living space, Head said it went into the vents flooding the crawl space beneath. "The wiring, the plumbing [was] completely saturated," Head said. He said city workers tried to fix the problem, but it was too late."By the time they got the equipment in, most of the water had penetrated the soil," Head said. He believes that made it difficult to dry out the property, which is why they are seeing problems with the foundation. Head said cracks below and inside the home developed. He filed a claim with the City of San Diego, but said he got no response."The city still has not compensated the clients entirely for the full scope of the damage," said Head's attorney, Evan Walker. There is now a lawsuit claiming roughly 5,000 worth of damage. "I think the city has known for some time about the precarious condition of its pipes and that it has done nothing," Walker added. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up for a prayer vigil Wednesday night, organized by the Broadway Heights Community Council. The Prayer Vigil for Love, Peace and Justice was outdoors on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. A dozen faith leaders participated, each taking a moment to speak to the crowd and then share prayer with the crowd. Organizers say they put this together in response to the racial injustice around the country, mentioning the death of George Floyd and the arrest of Amaurie Johnson at the trolley station in La Mesa. The vigil was peaceful and organizers say that was the goal. Families that attended the event and faith leaders say they are hopeful that coming together will lead to meaningful change and healing. 740
