The Wallace's giant bee is as big as a human thumb. That might be frightening to most people, but scientists were delighted when a team of researchers recently found it in Indonesia. It's the largest bee in the world, and scientists feared it might be extinct -- until now.A group of researchers made a stunning "rediscovery" of the elusive critter and took the first photos and video of a living Wallace's giant bee on January 25.The team -- composed of natural history photographer Clay Bolt, entomologist Eli Wyman, behavioral ecologist Simon Robson and ornithologist Glenn Chilton -- spent years studying the bee and slogged around in humid Indonesia forests for days before stumbling upon one.The rediscovery has renewed hope that more of the region's forests are home to the rare species. The skydiving plane that crashed Friday in Hawaii, killing all 11 people on board, was in another accident in California in 2016, according to National Transportation Safety Board records. The Beechcraft 65, manufactured in 1967, was being used as a skydiving plane as well on July 23, 2016 with 15 people on board when it stalled in the air three times and spun out before the pilot was able to land it. The 14 passengers on board, parachutists, were forced to jump to safety in mid-air.There was substantial damage to the tail section of the plane in the 2016 incident, but that wouldn't have precluded it from ever flying again, NTSB member Jennifer Homendy, who is in Hawaii investigating Friday's crash, said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. The cause of the 2016 incident was determined by the NTSB to be pilot error."The pilot lost control of that aircraft and there was substantial damage to the tail section of that plane. But like other modes of transportation you would conduct repairs and make sure that that is inspected," Homendy said. "So we will be looking at the quality of those repairs and whether it was inspected and whether it was airworthy before it was returned to service."In the more recent incident, the plane went down shortly after taking off from the Dillingham Airfield on Oahu's North Shore. The small plane, which was carrying passengers who intended to skydive, crashed around 6:30 p.m. Friday and erupted into flames. There were no survivors and authorities have not released the names of the people killed.Friday's crash is the deadliest civil aviation crash since 2011, Homendy said.On Sunday, she said officials were on the island to conduct their investigation and move "perishable evidence" into a safe location for inspection. Investigators have not yet determined a cause for the crash, she said. The plane did not contain a black box, Homendy said. The airfield where the plane crashed is roughly a 35-mile drive northwest of Honolulu. The general aviation airport is operated by the state Department of Transportation under a 25-year lease from the US Army, Hawaii's government website says. 2148

The State Department told CNN on Saturday that the United States is cutting off aid to the Northern Triangle, as the territory made up of the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras is known, after President Donald Trump said this Friday that they had "established" caravans of migrants to enter the United States."We were paying them huge amounts of money. And we are not paying them anymore. Because they have not done anything for us. They installed these caravans, "said Trump. "Following the secretary's instructions, we are conducting the president's address and ending the foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle for fiscal year 2017 and fiscal year 2018," said a spokesman for the State Department. "We will participate in the Congress as part of this process."Trump threatened to interrupt or substantially reduce aid to the Northern Triangle before saying in an October tweet that countries "could not do the job of arresting people since they left their country and came to the United States illegally." But experts have said that cutting aid will likely increase the number of migrants leaving countries and heading to the United States."Cutting aid could worsen the circumstances for families fleeing violence and conflict. The American aid associations in these places are working to address the root causes of violence in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. This is a time when these countries could use additional investments and partnerships from the United States to promote economic opportunities and security for their citizens, nothing less, "said the United States Global Leadership Coalition, composed of retired diplomats, military leaders and members of Congress. As for the possibility, the help could be cut. The officials did not say exactly how much money would be affected by the directive and it is likely that part of the amount has already been spent. According to a study by the Congressional Research Service, between last year and this year, about 1,300 million dollars were allocated to the region, and the great majority went to those three countries. 2142
