SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Extreme wind and heat is causing a school district along the San Diego coast to close early Friday. The Coronado Unified School District announced Thursday that the district will be on a minimum day Friday as heat reaches into the 90s. A minimum day means that all schools will begin at their regular times, but end the day at 12:30 p.m. Friday will mark the second day the district will let out early as heat scorches the region. RELATED: Check today's San Diego County forecastThe Sweetwater Union High School District also announced Thursday that the City of Chula Vista canceled fireworks shows at homecoming games amid the dry weather. “Attention #SUHSD communities @ CPH, HTH, ORH & MOH. The City of CV & SD have cancelled permits for fireworks displays for this Friday’s Homecoming games. We are aware fireworks are a time-tradition, however due to concerns of severe dry weather, we have been advised against them,” the district said in a tweet. The cancellations and closures also come as more than 7,000 people throughout the county are without power due to planned outages. Click here for an updated list of outages from SDG&E. A red flag warning that began early Thursday morning for a large swath of San Diego County continues through Friday at 5 p.m. 1305

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Documents show the man accused of pummeling a teenage Syrian refugee on a trolley car has a history of run-ins with authorities. On Oct. 15, Adrian Vergara was accused of the crime after approaching the teen and asking him if he's Mexican."He responded, no I am Arab. He does not speak a lot of English, and with that response the person began to pummel him in the face," Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Legal Director, Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans, said.Tuesday, San Diego Police said they had arrested Vergara on suspicion of assault with force and violation of civil rights.RELATED: Man accused of attacking Syrian refugee aboard trolley car arrested10News dug into Vergara's background and found a history of violent incidents. In 2012, court documents say Vergara threatened a man with a billy club. He did community service in the South Metro Career Center. A letter says he worked well there with special needs students as well as general students. A certificate also showed he completed a 12-hour anger management program in 2013 and was called an outstanding professional candidate.RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeIn 2015, a case was dismissed accusing Vergara of attacking another man. And in 2016, he was charged with grand theft and burglary for breaking into the Central Library.Later that year, documents say Vergara violated a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend, kicking her front door, texting her and in a phone call, cursing at her and saying, "if you don't talk to me I'm going to go to your job and cause a scene. I don't care about my life." Documents show he called her 20 times in 30 minutes.Court documents also show a carjacking charge at the beginning of 2017.In October 2017, Vergara was charged for beating up a man and given a stay away order from the MTS Imperial Transit Center. The most recent document shows he violated a court order, put in place to prevent domestic violence in January 2019. 1996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From the confrontation in a Los Angeles Trader Joe's to a showdown in a San Diego Starbucks, there have been a lot of customers claiming businesses can't legally require them to wear a mask. Some customers even carry a card threatening fines and citing the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. But there are three things to consider before making an ADA claim, according to lawyers.First, to bring a successful ADA lawsuit, attorneys say the person without a mask must truly have a disability. Businesses can ask if a person has a disability, but not much beyond that.RELATED: Confrontation over wearing a mask at Coronado coffee shop"You can't delve into someone's medical condition and ask them a bunch of questions," said attorney Colin Harrison. "I would not advise businesses to ask for any type of documentation."If the person says they have a disability, the ADA requires businesses to make reasonable accommodation. So what's reasonable?"A reasonable accommodation might be to ask the person to wear a face shield, which is about an inch and away and probably wouldn't restrict their ability to breathe," says attorney Steven Elia.RELATED: GoFundMe started for San Diego barista after woman posts about not wearing mask at StarbucksElia says other accommodations might include curbside pickup, but the ADA has limits: businesses don't have to fundamentally alter the way they operate."Customer says I don't want to wear a mask, I want you to deliver to my home. If the business doesn't already provide delivery service, that would be a major fundamental alteration of their business, one they would not be required to do," Harrison said. Both attorneys suggested businesses try to make accommodations first.RELATED: Feds warn of phony cards claiming face mask exemptionBut what happens if those accommodations won't work? There's a third component in the ADA: Subsection 36.208 allows businesses to turn disabled people away if they pose a direct threat to the health and safety of others."Someone not wearing a mask, they might think they're not infected, but they could be and pose a direct threat to spread the virus to many people," Elia said. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has said COVID-19 does constitute a direct threat, so our experts say the threat of a successful lawsuit in a case like this is low. That said, there's nothing stopping people from filing these lawsuits. There have been at least nine across the country. But businesses that win can pursue legal fees from the other party. 2548

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- During this pandemic, technology such as Zoom, has become very important in helping family and friends stay in contact. But what about senior citizens who may not be tech-savvy? Well, Vi, a senior living residence in La Jolla, is using a pilot program from Candoo Tech, which is aimed at getting older adults, like 98-year-old resident Randy Tidmore, over the fear of going online. "I didn't know anything about technology," says Tidmore. "I was having all kinds of trouble, and it wasn't easy."But thanks to Candoo Tech, seniors like Randy can take free online training sessions, in everything from learning how to use an iPad, online safety, Zoom, and much more."Actually, it keeps me really busy because I Zoom with Clipped Wings, which is an organization of United Airlines people, and Women Marines Association. All these groups Zoom."And now, the soon to be 99-year-old has become very confident with her use of technology."To talk to people, and to see them, it makes it really easy. Once they show you how to do it." 1053
