SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly 5,000 San Diegans are set to gather throughout the county for a morning of prayer Saturday.The event, called "We Pray San Diego" will bring 4,900 people together as well as 132 pastors and several county leaders. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-elected San Diego District 4 councilwoman Monica Montgomery is vowing to improve the relationship between her community and the police department. On Monday, she was unanimously appointed to the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee. More than a dozen community members spoke during a special meeting on Monday, backing Montgomery. The overwhelming support for her appointment quickly turned to frustration and anger towards the rest of the council and the police department about Aleah Jenkins, who died in SDPD custody early this month. Montgomery says she hears the community's frustration and is ready to get to work. "A lot of this stems just not from the support of me, but the desire to have real action in our community when it comes to our police and community relations," said Montgomery.She plans on taking a closer look at an SDSU racial profiling study within the department and look into possibly giving the Community Review Board subpoena powers to allow them to perform independent investigations and obtain sworn testimony during alleged police misconduct. "I'm confident we'll do the right thing. Everyone will need to do the right thing; we're at a crossroads and we need to do the right thing by our people and by our officers," added Montgomery. The police department insists there is no evidence of force used during Jenkins' arrest and is referring all questions to the district attorney. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New data from WalletHub shows how California ranks on a list of best and worst states for military retirees.Overall, California ranked high when it comes to quality of life and health care, but much lower when it comes to the economy and homelessness.WalletHub ranked states on a number of other factors, with one being best and 25 being average.In the quality of life category, California comes in at 10th on the list of 51 states and the District of Columbia.From there, the data starts looking less attractive. When it comes to the economic environment, California ranked low coming in at 48th.California also ranked 48th for veterans per capita, yet ranked 49th for the percentage of homeless veterans.The area where California ranked best was number of VA health facilities per number of veterans where the state took the 3rd spot.The data also found that red states are more friendly towards military retirees than blue states. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are investigating a shooting in the Chollas Creek area Friday that left a man with multiple gunshot wounds.San Diego Police say a 22-year-old Hispanic male was walking in the 5300 block of Lea St. when he was approached by a Hispanic male suspect sometime before 7 p.m. Friday. A brief conversation began between the two, before the suspect pulled out a handgun and fire four times at the man, police say.The man was hit three times by gunfire. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.The suspect fled the scene in a red sedan, heading eastbound on Lea St. He is described as being 5-foot 8-inches tall with thin build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police on the campus of San Diego State University are hoping surveillance photos will lead to an arrest in a recent burglary. The pictures are clear. They show two men walking in the hallway of a campus building. Another photo shows them at a different angle. Police aren't releasing details about the burglary, but they say right now, there is no threat to campus. This is the latest in a series of crimes on or near campus. Last Wednesday night around 8:30, two men armed with guns robbed two people as they sat in their car. It happened in the north alley off of 55th and Montezuma. Taylor Langpap and her roommate, Jessica Ancar, walk the alley all the time to get to their apartment. "I was a little uneasy that it was just really close to my apartment, but I wasn't really surprised cause stuff like that happens all the time here," said Jessica. In the fall, there was a string or robberies where students had their cellphones stolen. In another case, a man was charged with ripping off students who were trying to sell things on the App Offer Up. Campus police aren't saying if the men in the surveillance photos are wanted in any other crimes, but students say they are always taking precautions, especially when walking after dark. "I make sure to call one of my family members or a friend, and then if I am not on the phone with someone, I try to keep very aware of my surroundings. They have blue lights around campus, you just have to make sure where those are so you can get where you are going safely," said Alexandra Howder. 1570
