SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A construction worker was hit by a car and killed Wednesday morning on state Route 94 in Spring Valley.The crash was reported shortly after 12:10 a.m. on eastbound SR-94 near Avocado Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.ABC 10News learned the victim was a worker for Granite Construction, and he was working alongside other construction workers when he was struck.Cones had been set down on the roadway, allowing traffic to pass on the left while work was being conducted on the right side. However, some workers told ABC 10News a car traveling on the wrong side of the cones struck their co-worker.Witnesses said the victim was dragged about 40 feet before the car, a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage, stopped.The 41-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The car's 24-year-old female driver remained at the scene for CHP questioning.The crash remains under investigation. The CHP said, "At this time, alcohol and or drugs are not believed to have played a factor in this collision."No other injuries were reported. 1073

(AP) — A federal appeals court decided Friday to reconsider claims that Florida federal prosecutors violated the rights of Jeffrey Epstein's sex abuse victims by not informing them about a secret plea deal. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which is based in Atlanta, vacated a previous panel's 2-1 decision rejecting an effort to undo an agreement federal prosecutors made with Epstein more than a decade ago. According to a report from the Miami Herald, it was revealed that former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, who resigned from his post last July, cut a deal with Epstein that kept him out of prison when he was a federal prosecutor for the Southern District of Florida.Instead of facing federal charges, Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to lesser state crimes and served a short jail sentence. Some victims have long claimed the Miami U.S. attorney's office violated their rights by not informing them of the plea deal.Epstein was found dead in his New York prison cell last August. 1024

Since August 15, when California’s fire activity elevated, there have been 25 fatalities and over 4,200 structures destroyed.In August, three of California’s four largest wildfires on record sparked. Currently, the largest, the August Complex fire burning east of Chico, stands at 803,489 acres.“We’re living in a world with greater wildfire risk from one-degree warming. Two degrees of warming will intensify those risks,” said Dr. Noah Diffenbaugh, professor of Earth System Science at Stanford University.Dr. Diffenbaugh says in the last 40 years there has been a tenfold increase in the amount of land burned by wildfires, and that number directly correlates to Earth’s warming from climate change.He says the science is pretty straightforward. As temperature rises fuels dry out more easily, which makes less-prone areas spark plugs for fires. Then add in the changes in humidity, wind speeds, and long-term weather patterns that are all affected by climate change and wildfires become larger, stronger, and more frequent.Seventeen of California’s 20 largest fires in history all started after the year 2000.“Very careful, objective, hypothesis-driven research has shown that about half of that increase in the area burned in the western United States is attributable to the long-term warming,” said Dr. Diffenbaugh.The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions says between 1984 and 2015, the number of large wildfires doubled in the western United States. It also estimates that for every one-degree rise in Earth’s temperature, the average area burned from a wildfire could increase by 600 percent in some places.“We have two of the three largest wildfires in California’s history burning right now so it is a simple fact,” said Dr. Diffenbaugh.The increase in fire activity also increases the strain put on resources.Recently, national fire managers raised the United State’s fire preparedness level to five, which is its highest level, making all fire-trained federal employees available for assignment. 2112
