Apple iPhone fans love the edge-to-edge glass of the new X models. Applebee's announced Tuesday it will close as many as 80 restaurants nationwide as the chain continues to struggle attracting young diners.The announcement comes after Applebee's parent company, DineEquity, said in August it would close more than 100 restaurants.It's not clear which Applebee's locations would close, but according to Fortune, remaining locations will be judged on a number of criteria. “The expected closures will be based on several criteria, including meeting our brand and image standards as well as operational results,” DineEquity told Fortune in a statement.DineEquity also announced it would close up to 40 IHOP locations, though it plans to open as many as 100 new locations of the breakfast chain throughout the country.DineEquity's stock has soared since the announcement, rising nearly 20 percent on Tuesday.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. American Airlines said Wednesday evening that it was moving ahead with furloughs for 19,000 employees as CARES Act stimulus funds expire.In a letter to employees, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said the furloughs would begin Thursday."Despite enormous bipartisan support for an extension of the (Payroll Support Program), our elected officials have not been able to reach agreement on a COVID-19 relief package that would enable this extension," Parker wrote. "As a result, tomorrow, we will begin the difficult process of furloughing 19,000 of our hardworking and dedicated colleagues."Parker added that he spoke with Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin on Wednesday, who told him that the White House is continuing to negotiate with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on another COVID-19 stimulus package that would include further stimulus for the airline industry."Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that any of these efforts will come to fruition," Parker wrote.
