SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine Corps veteran will be part of the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington, D.C. He'll be honored for his service, and the work he does with other veterans who have PTSD.Bill Rider is the founder of American Combat Veterans of War, a non-profit that he started in 2013."We let them know we're going to be there for them, we mentor them," Rider said about his group. "Just about anything and everything they could possibly need, ACVOW does."ACVOW runs programs that help veterans cope with PTSD. Their "Veterans Moving Forward" program visits vets at the Vista Detention Center. Its goal is to reduce recidivism rates to below 10% for veterans.Another program called Safe Warrior Outreach pairs younger veterans with older veterans to talk through their struggles and share stories."We're trying to chip away at the stigma of PTSD," said Rider. "Human beings were not meant to watch their friends be killed in such a visceral way. And, they're not meant to kill other human beings."It's an issue he has first-hand experience with. Rider joined the Marine Corps when he was 19 years old and was part of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment. That regiment became famous for its part in the battle of Khe Sahn, where it had the highest casualty rate in Marine Corps history."It was, on a daily basis, a visceral passing of Marines and warriors," said Rider. "In one battle, we lost 45 or 50 people, and another 150 were wounded."Rider left the Marines in 1969. When he returned home, it wasn't long before the lingering effects of PTSD started to show."The way I knew something was quite different was when I was transferred back to my little hometown in Ohio. A car backfired, and I instinctively laid out on the sidewalk, expecting more shots," he said.Now he's dedicated his life to helping other vets who deal with PTSD. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Los Angeles area man says the San Diego County District Attorney's office charged him with a crime he didn't commit.Angel Galvan says the mistake cost him money, time and when you search his name at the courthouse a court file."For me to go through all of this, it hurt a lot," said Angel Galvan.Galvan says in July of this year, he received a letter from the San Diego County District Attorney saying he'd been charged with Grand Theft of Personal Property from Go Wireless. He thought it was a mail scam."What is PC 487," Galvan said.It was no scam.Galvan says the district attorney's office claimed he and other people were using stolen credit cards to buy merchandise from a Go Wireless location in the San Diego area."I hope you realize I live in the valley (San Fernando) like I don't live nowhere near San Diego," Galvan said.Galvan lives in Panorama City, that's in Los Angeles County, about two and a half hours from San Diego.Galvan says he did work at a Go Wireless store near his home, but for only two months, and that was back in 2017. The alleged crime happened in March of 2018."Every day I got home, I was stressed," Galvan said. "I couldn't believe it," he said.According to a claim, Galvan filed with the County of San Diego, "It turns out that another individual named Angel Galvan worked at Go Wireless, but worked in San Diego, committing crimes."Team 10 obtained an email sent by a San Diego County Deputy District Attorney in August of 2019 to Galvan's criminal attorney acknowledging he was not the correct Angel Galvan.The email stated, "HR at Go Wireless mixed him up with another Angel Galvan. I will calendar a dismissal asap. Sorry for the mix-up.""No one called him, no one looked to see if it was the right person, no one checked his address no one checked his work records," said Galvan's civil attorney Alex Ozols.Ozols claims the District Attorney's office did not do any further investigation after receiving Galvan's information from Go Wireless, and that's a problem."A lot of time, they do get it right, and we appreciate that they are representing the state of California," Ozols said. "However, when they get it wrong, the repercussions are just so bad when they do, and in this case, they did."Galvan tells 10News he had to sell his truck to pay the legal fees. He also had to drive to San Diego for an arraignment where he was order to do a book and release. He says he was fingerprinted and had his DNA taken.According to the claim, "He will/does have this listed on his Department of Justice print out, he is still in the police system, an arrest records still exists, and his DNA was taken against his 4th amendment constitutional right because he was charged with a felony."Galvan says he lived in constant fear he'd go to jail, and his son would grow up without a father."I work 50-60-hour weeks. I barely even see my son now, and the last thing I wanted to do was go to jail and not be able to see him at all," Galvan said.Galvan said when the case was finally dismissed there was a wave of emotion."It hurts a lot because of everything I went through," he said.Both the San Diego County District Attorney's office and Go Wireless said they couldn't comment on pending litigation.Galvan's attorney tells 10News the County of San Diego rejected the legal claim, and they do plan to file a lawsuit.Court records show there is an ongoing court case involving another person named Angel Galvan. 10News tried to track that person down was unable to speak with anyone. 3540

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man building his travel brand on Instagram said hackers tried to take it all away.Claudio Copiano Jr. runs the account @globalvagabonds. He posts pictures from his travels all around the world and advises people on how to travel on a budget. He’s traveled around the United States and about 30 other countries so far. Copiano has received partnerships with two countries to post about his travels. Eventually, he hopes to build it into a full-time income.“I want to show everybody what I do,” he said. Recently, Copiano received a notification from Instagram saying his email had been changed. “I clicked on ‘forgot my password,’ even though I know my password,” Copiano said.He still could not log in and started to panic. Then, he started to receive emails from someone who said he had hacked the account. The hacker demanded 0 in Bitcoin for the return of the account. Copiano said he sent dozens of emails to Instagram with no luck. “I got an email the first time from them saying that my account had been deleted and there was nothing that they could do,” Copiano said.Fortunately, he was able to figure out the new name of his account and determined it was still active. He said Instagram sent security codes to access his account but it was sent to the hacker’s email.Copiano is still not sure how he got his account back, but said after dozens of attempts, the security code was sent to his phone and he was able to access his account. He immediately changed his password and emphasized he did not pay the ransom. “You should never send money to a hacker because he’s not going to give you your account back,” Copiano said.Security expert Ted Harrington, executive partner with Independent Security Evaluators, agrees. “The reason you don’t pay the ransom is that [it] just further incentivizes other bad guys to keep doing this,” Harrington said. He also encourages people to contact the FBI if they believe they are a victim of a crime to file a report. Harrington also said two-factor authentication is vital to keeping an account safe. It is something Copiano did not have at the time, but added it right after he got his account back. “Two-factor authentication is essentially an additional way to verify who you are,” Harrington said. “Two-factor authentication is one of the most impactful security features that exist today.” A spokesperson with Instagram said they recently launched a new in-app experience making it easier for people to sign in and reclaim an account if it has been hacked. They sent the following information to Team 10:There are two ways to access this experience: 1) if we detect you are having trouble logging in (for e.g. if you repeatedly enter an incorrect password), or 2) by clicking “Need more help” on the login page.The experience will ask you to enter different types of information specific to your account, for example, the email address or phone number associated with your account, or the email or phone number you used when you signed up to Instagram.From there, we will send a 6 digit code to the contact information you select, which will allow you to regain access to your account. When you re-gain access to your account, we will take additional measures to ensure a hacker cannot use codes sent to your email address of phone number to access your account from a different device.This experience allows you to recover your account even if the account information has been changed by a hacker e.g. if the username and associated contact information is changed.The Instagram spokesperson also said if someone gains access through a compromised email account, people can follow steps detailed on the Help Center. 3709

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized Saturday night after being stabbed several times during a confrontation in Mission Beach, police said.The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 900 block of West Mission Bay, said Ofc. Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.Heims said a 26-year-old man approached and exchanged words with a 50-year-old man. The younger man then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times."The victim fell to the ground and the suspect fled the scene," Heims said. "The victim was transported to the hospital where his injuries were determined (to be) non-life threatening."The suspect was caught a short time later and arrested. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A recent poll shows how residents of the 50th Congressional District are feeling a week after Darrell Issa entered the race. According to the poll, Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar is leading the race, followed by Republican Carl DeMaio and Republican Darrell Issa. Meanwhile, the poll is also an indication of how district residents feel about a number of issues, including impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. To get the data, SurveyUSA interviewed 770 voting-age individuals in California’s 50th Congressional District between September 27 and October 2. Of the voting-age individuals surveyed, 671 are registered to vote in the state. 592 of those registered voters were likely to vote in the 2020 California Primary, SurveyUSA says.
