"And that he's out here every day to make sure that that doesn't happen again."Her K-9 Qquappe is named in honor of Lincoln Quappe, a first response firefighter in New York City who died in the 9-11 terrorist attacks."What did you think when you found out where his name came from?" Correspondent Kumasi Aaron asked Sherwin. "I had no idea that they had that program."Qquappe is just one of hundreds of dogs that were named after 911 victims as a part of the TSA Puppy Program from 2002 to 2012. From the moment Sherwin found out, every scent, every sniff with Qquappe took on new meaning."It took a minute to digest that because that's a big responsibility," Sherwin says. "You're taking on someones namesake like that and you want to be the best that you can be so you can uphold it. To the honor that they did."It meant even more when Sherwin met one of Lincoln Quappe's childhood friends, and sent pictures of Qquappe to his family."It hit home," Sherwin says. "It really hit's home with all the victims because it's not just a name that's there. You're actually talking to somebody that knew this person and grew up with them and knew all about them."While Qquappe might not understand the significance of his name, Sherwin says he embodies the same desire to protect and serve as his namesake."He's such a people lover," Sherwin says. "He loves children. He loves his job."And working alongside Qquappe, with everything he and his name represent, makes Sherwin love hers even more."Does it give you a sense of pride?" Correspondent Kumasi Aaron asked. "I wouldn't say pride," Sherwin replied. "But it's an honor. It's an absolute honor." 2283

This year’s election has already been one of the most contentious in modern history, but for one family from Flagstaff, Arizona, it is their most memorable.In 1920, Blanche Reeves was a 29-year-old mother of five living in Iowa on her farm with her husband. Just two years prior, she had come down with pneumonia after contracting the flu during the 1918 pandemic.“Her hair all fell out and she was just in bed for a very long time,” said Reeve’s daughter, Helen, now 91.Helen Reeves was not born at the time, but she remembers her father’s vivid stories about her mother’s condition. She says she was in a coma and doctors didn’t expect her to make it through the night.“He said [my mother] couldn’t react to what was happening but could hear what was being said in the room,” she said.Reeves says the doctor left a death certificate with her father to fill out in the morning as he waited with her mother, but it laid on the bedside table in the hospital empty as her mother began to pull through.She would remain bedridden and resting for nearly two years as she battled the illness one day in 1920.“Dad said she just sat up in bed and said, ‘I’m going to go vote,’” said Reeves.That year was the first women were allowed to vote following the suffrage movement, so Reeves says her father hitched up a wagon to their horses with a straw bed and drove her mother into town so she could come to the local schoolhouse and cast her vote.The moment started a revered tradition in the family’s household.“I haven’t missed an election since I was able to vote when I was 21,” said Reeves.“I can’t think of anyone in our family who doesn’t vote,” added Reeves’ daughter, Andrea Hartley, laughing. “It is the one way we can have a voice and sometimes it the only time we can have a voice.”Hartley says growing up, her mother would take her to the polls each election to accompany her as she cast her ballot until she was able to vote for the first. She then did the same with her two kids who have voted since they turned 18.This year’s election, she says, is even more important as it marks 100 years since her grandmother, Blanche, was carried by her husband into the schoolhouse to cast her very first vote.“This year, more than any other year, I have felt the urgency to get my ballot turned back in,” she said.“I did it to honor my mother,” added Reeves. “I think if she were here today and she could know I could sit in my kitchen, at the table, and cast my ballot and not have to ride in a wagon or anything- not have to leave sick babies behind- I think she would be amazed. Simple economics suggest that when Americans drive less, there will be a loss in revenue for states. States are also losing money with sales taxes, tolls and DMV registrations, which is making a problem even worse. WHAT'S BEING CANCELED"The state is collecting less of that money," Alison Black, Chief Economist with the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, said. Black's organization has been tracking which states are cutting projects.Currently, 14 states have announced project delays or cancellations, valued at nearly .5 billion. These include Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia.
