For three years, Comal in Denver has been a place for aspiring entrepreneurs to chase their culinary dreams.“I like to cook. I enjoy it,” Comal employee Martha Ordonez said in Spanish. When the restaurant first opened, workers were a group of women from the neighborhood. Most of them were immigrants who had been living in the United States for a while. Now the food incubator also serves refugees from Syria and Iraq who are fairly new arrivals to the U.S.The idea is to provide a platform and safe place for people in the community to learn skills that can better their lives and the lives of their families.“Business skills, language skills, marketing, basically anything you would need to run your own business,” Comal founder Slavica Park said. However, it’s become more than just a place for training.“I love my culture, and I know that culture can provide more than just a dish,” Comal employee Silvia Hernandez said. It’s become a place of cross-cultural exchange. A place where the workers and the customers can experience something different in their own backyard. “We really encourage them to dig deep, to go back to even their grandma’s recipes, because we really want it to be authentic and specific to their culture,” Park said.“Sometimes I have to call my mom to ask her ‘oh you know this dish? What did you put in that dish?” Hernandez said.Silvia Hernandez is from Mexico City. She’s been cooking at Comal since its inception.“Today I cook chicken with creamy poblano sauce, and I remember my mom cook the poblano sauce, but I add a little bit of spinach so I put a little bit of my own today,” Hernandez said. After a year of learning about the industry, Hernandez was able to open her own catering business. It’s an accomplishment she doesn’t think would have been possible if it wasn’t for her time at Comal, and her ability to get paid while she learned.“That’s good because that’s how we support our families. That’s how I support my family.”Hernandez said a lot of people who work at Comal are looking for hope. And what helps even more is when immigrants like her are welcomed into society.“While Denver has been extremely welcoming to the refugee and immigrant population, here and there obviously you’ll run across misconceptions. And I think one of those typically is that we’re here to get something. I think it’s quite contrary. I think we’re here to really work hard, and also, we do bring many talents and gifts,” Park said. The talents of Hernandez have brought her into a world of culinary success. She says integrating into U.S. culture hasn’t always been easy, but she believes it’s best to keep a positive attitude.“Changes or bad things sometimes make you learn, and have a new beginning,” Hernandez said.It doesn’t matter where you come from. Hernandez says anyone can have a new beginning.“We are welcoming any culture… any kind of cuisine. Can be American, African, Bolivian, Venezuelan, whatever.” 2945

High-tech crooks have figured out a way to get around two-factor authentication and access some customers’ bank, email and cell phone accounts.Two-factor authentication is the process where your bank, email provider or other business texts you a one-time code that must be entered to get access to your account after you enter your password. Without the code, a user cannot log into an account.Businessman Robert Ross says crooks got his cell phone company to change his SIM card without his knowledge so calls, texts and two-factor authentication messages no longer went to his cell phone, but instead to one the hacker had in his possession. A SIM card is the little chip in most phones that tells a cellular company which handset should receive a call or text.“Hackers stole million from me,” Robert Ross said.A 21-year-old man was later arrested.Ross says 0,000 was stolen first and then 0,000 again later."What the hackers did is they called up AT&T and they impersonated me, and they said, ‘Hi my name is Rob Ross and I got a new phone with a new SIM card. And could you please change the SIM card number in my account,’” Ross said.AT&T would not confirm or deny the specifics of Ross situation. The hacker never touched Ross’ cell phone, he says but was able to route all his calls and texts to the hacker's phone. This included two-factor authentication texts needed to get into Ross’ bank accounts and Gmail account."I look up from my phone, to my laptop and I saw that in real time, my Gmail was going from being logged in to logged out and then I looked back down at my phone. I clicked through the lock screen and I saw that I had no service," he said.He says preventing messages from reaching his Gmail might have delayed him finding out that money has been moved from his account.Metropolitan State University of Denver professor Steve Beaty, who is a cybersecurity and information technology expert, says sometimes crooks can get into a customer’s cell phone account by knowing the answers to security questions."What's your mother's maiden name? What is your pet's name? The problem is, all of those can be found out very easily through breaches and through social media," Beaty said.Beaty says the growing number of breaches shouldn't deter you from using two-factor authentication for your Gmail and bank accounts. He says, instead make it harder for people to impersonate you."I recommend lying about your secret security questions so that you’re not using your mother's maiden name, not your pet name, not your favorite car. I can figure out all of those things about you on Facebook and Twitter," Beaty said. The suspect who police say broke into Robert's accounts has been caught. He's from New York City and faces 21 charges. In Ross’ case, his money was stored in a virtual currency. He doesn’t expect to get his money back.AT&T sent the following statement:“We continually look for ways to enhance our policies and safeguards to protect against these sorts of scams. When our customers are victims of identity theft, we strive to reverse activity related to their account with us and restore service as quickly as possible.”AT&T has a web page with news and information about SIM swaps here: 3250

House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler on Monday announced a sweeping investigation into President Donald Trump's campaign, businesses, transition and administration, a probe that would lay the groundwork for Democrats if they choose to pursue impeachment proceedings against the President. The Judiciary Committee on Monday sent letters to 81 people and entities — including the White House, the Justice Department, senior campaign officials, Trump Organization officials and the President's sons — marking the start of a broad investigation that will tackle questions that include possible obstruction of justice, hush-money payments to women, collusion with Russia and allegations of the President abusing his office and using it for personal gain. They are demanding responses within two weeks. The sprawling net cast by the committee also signals that the Democratic-led investigations are likely to stretch on for months, with multiple committees seeking information from senior officials in the White House, the Trump campaign and the Trump Organization. The evidence gathered in the investigation would be the basis of a possible impeachment proceeding, which the Judiciary Committee would lead, though Nadler has said it's too soon to be discussing impeachment."We do not now have the evidence all sorted out and everything to do an impeachment," Nadler said in an interview 1391
