SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local group is teaming up with a non-profit organization to help fight the unemployment rates among young adults in San Diego. Casa Familia came up with the idea to start a coffee cart, training teenagers and 20-year-olds in different skills to run the coffee business. San Ysidro Health Center jumped on board to help with the funding of the project. Ana Melgoza is the Vice President of General Affairs for San Ysidro Health Center. She tells 10News it was an obvious decision."We said 'yes, of course' as soon as Casa Familia approached us with this wonderful and innovative endeavor," Melgoza said.El K-Fe hired six baristas, graduates of Casa Familiar's youth barista training program. The ,000 coffee cart now sits in the central hub of the health center. The baristas and managers are all young adults who have gone through many months of training. Francisco Dominguez is a student at Southwestern College and among the first to join the project."It’s kind of giving hope to the youth that think that they don't have a chance. They have a chance; we all have a chance. I started out like them now I'm looking forward to what the future has and what I can do with this and what we can do as a team," said Dominguez.Dominguez said the project is beneficial for many reasons but mostly for the skills learned at such a young age."Most jobs are 18 and older, so with this internship, it's 14 and older; so high school students: sophomores, freshmen, juniors, seniors in high school, can join the program, can get that job experience they need so once they graduate, they can get that job."The plan is to reinvest proceeds from the first El K-Fe coffee cart to establish more carts and create more youth job and training opportunities.  1820

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge ruled Wednesday that a Navy commander will face a third trial on charges he tried to rape a junior officer in her home.John Michael Neuhart II asked the judge to dismiss all charges after a second jury was unable to reach a verdict.The judge dismissed charges of assault with intent to commit rape during burglary, burglary and resisting or delaying a peace officer.RELATED: Mistrial declared for former Navy commander accused of rapeThe judge added that prosecutors can proceed with a third trial in January on charges of attempted forcible rape and assault with intent to commit rape.Neuhart now faces six years behind bars and lifetime sex offender registration if found guilty. Neuhart had previously been facing life in prison.In the two trials combined, 21 out of 24 jurors voted to convict Neuhart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was fatally shot by San Diego Police as officers responded to calls of vandalism in the Mountain View neighborhood early Monday morning.According to police, officers were called to the 300 block of South Pardee Street just before 4:30 a.m. after receiving reports of “a violent disturbance involving a weapon.”Residents at the home were woken up by a man they say ripped a metal curtain rod from the window and began breaking windows and other objects.“Fearing for their safety, they asked another resident to call 911. A neighbor also heard the commotion and called 911 reporting it sounded like someone was being tortured,” police said.When officers arrived, police say they gave the man directions in English and Spanish but received no response. According to police, that’s when the man crawled through a broken window before running towards officers with a metal pole.“Fearing for their safety, one officer fired a bean bag round, one officer fired a Taser, and one officer fired several rounds from his service pistol. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona.
