XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade surplus was approximately 84 billion U.S. dollars from Jan. to July, down 20 percent year on year, and the year 2010 is expected to see a small trade surplus, said Commerce Minister Chen Deming on Tuesday.Chen made the projection at the ongoing World Investment Forum that runs from Sept. 7 to 9 in southeast China's coastal city of Xiamen.China has seen a trade surplus in recent years, but with a decreasing margin, and the trade surplus takes up a very small proportion of the GDP, noted Chen."China's foreign trade policy aims to stabilize exports and increase imports, which can boost China's economy and also bring positive impacts to neighboring countries," said Chen.Customs statistics show that China's import and export value in the first seven months reached 1,617 billion U.S. dollars, with exports worth 850.5 billion U.S. dollars, up 35.6 percent, and imports at 766.6 billion U.S. dollars, up by 47.2 percent.China's trade surplus in 2009 was more than 190 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.4 percent from the 290 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.The World Investment Forum is the global meeting on investment and development issues organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Held every two years, the forum aims to strengthen international cooperation in the interest of promoting international investment and its contribution to economic growth and development.

YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan Province has risen to 32 after six more bodies were found, rescuers said Monday.Some 300 rescuers are still racing against the time to search the five miners remaining trapped despite slim chances of survival as they were feared buried in coal dust.More than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust smothered the pit after the gas leak, which hampered the rescue, said Du Bo, deputy chief of the rescue headquarters.The rescue efforts, however, are speeding up after the underground transport, power and ventilation systems have been restored, said Du.The gas outburst happened at 6:03 a.m. Saturday when 276 miners were working underground in the mine in Yuzhou City. A total of 239 workers escaped but 21 were found dead and 16 were trapped.An initial investigation showed that 173,500 cubic meters of gas leaked out in the accident.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp..
KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.
