BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or Cabinet, adopted a stimulus plan Wednesday for the shipbuilding industry at an executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao. The meeting said shipbuilding is a modern, comprehensive industry that provides technical equipment for transportation, maritime development and national defense. Supporting shipbuilders would also help other sectors, including steel, chemicals, textiles, light industry, equipment manufacturing and information technology, it said. New orders for domestic shipbuilders are expected to fall to 20-30 million deadweight tons in 2009, compared to 58.18 million deadweight tons in 2008, according to the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry The meeting agreed to increase credit support by an unspecified amount for ship buyers. It also decided to extend the existing financial support policies for oceangoing vessels until 2012. These policies include tax rebates on key imported components for domestically owned oceangoing ships. It said construction of new docks and the expansion of slipways should be suspended for three years to facilitate industrial restructuring. It also recommended investment in research and development of facilities to build high-technology ships and maritime engineering equipment and promote technical innovation. The meeting also approved a draft plan for fighting drought.

JINAN, March 17 (Xinhua) -- The Premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Yong Il, has vowed closer cooperation with east China's Shandong Province. Kim arrived in Beijing Tuesday before traveling to Jinan, capital of Shandong, on his first China trip as premier. The visit, made at the invitation of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, is scheduled to end March 21. In a meeting with Shandong officials, Kim said the traditional bilateral friendship nurtured by leaders of the elder generations had witnessed sound development over the years. Calling his China tour an important part of the China-DPRK Friendship Year, an annual bilateral exchange program, Kim said the DPRK is willing to further strengthen cooperation with Shandong in various areas including politics, economics and culture. BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The import and export of electronic and information products in China went down 30.3 percent year on year in the first two months, data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed on Friday. The combined import and export value was 87.61 billion U.S. dollars through January to February. In breakdown, export fell 26.1 percent from the same time a year ago to 53.55 billion U.S. dollars. Import was down 36.07 percent to 34.06 billion U.S. dollars. The import value of LCD panel, a main component in flat-panel television, declined 48.8 percent to 1.82 billion U.S. dollars. The export value of processing trade with imported material, which comprised more than two thirds of the total export, was down 25.4 percent to 37.86 billion U.S. dollars. China's export, a driving force of the world's third largest economy, plummeted 25.7 percent year on year in February, the worst decline in more than a decade, as global demand deteriorated amid the deepening recession.
