SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city updated the Sherman Heights community and surrounding neighborhoods Wednesday evening, about the transitional homeless storage facility that's set to open. The facility is scheduled to open at the corner of the Commerical and 20th Streets on June 13. It's been a controversial project from the beginning. The storage facility will hold 500 units for homeless people to store their things while they look for work and get back on their feet. RELATED: 514
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The military poured .1 billion into San Diego's economy, according to the Military Economic Impact Study released Thursday.The figure higher than expected, according to Executive Director of SDMAC Mark Balmert, due to more ships stopping in San Diego and more sailors and Marines coming to the region.The author of the report, Dr. Lynn Reaser, said these numbers back the idea the military is a mega-industry. She noted San Diego is home to one in every six of the nation's sailors.The study's results were announced across the bay from Naval Air Station North Island, at the Harbor Drive Annex. Mayor Kevin Faulconer was among the speakers and drove home the message: Don't take our military for granted."Those dollars are really going to help every portion of our city," Faulconer said.The focus of this year's study surrounded NAVWAR, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command. The Navy communications headquarters used to be known as SPAWAR. "The new plan is to develop those 70 acres into a technology hub with the NAVWAR headquarters at its center and that will change the Midway District. It will be wonderful for San Diego and it's wonderful for the Navy," Balmert said. "What that's going to mean for our national security for our entire country but also to connect the airport to the trolley," Faulconer added. NAVWAR produced billion in gross regional product and houses 26,000 jobs, according to Balmert, who described the jobs as, "among the better jobs in our community they're high tech jobs, high paying jobs."The study states more than four-fifths of the workforce hold at least a four-year college degree. About two-fifths hold a Master's or Doctorate degree.Reaser said those jobs are secure and will grow, "two-thirds of NAVWAR's employees work in cyber security which is a major emerging cluster in the overall county."Balmert said the future looks brights for San Diego's military growth. He said in the next five years we will double the amount of submarines at Point Loma and add another aircraft carrier to our home port. San Diego has two carriers that home port here, and one is currently ported. The USS Abraham Lincoln is coming back and will dock by the end of the year. 2233
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students from around San Diego are using a modern medium to learn and inspire.The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, which has chapters at 22 local schools, has launched the "Chavistas Podcast."Once a month, they interview a local leader, learning that person's story. They hope it can inspire other kids to reach for the stars."We feel that, as a community of Chavistas, that we can get a good message of community out there," say Ariana Gallegos, the club supervisor.Gallegos has a background in radio broadcasting and uses that to help the kids craft their interviews."It's a beautiful experience that I get to bring the students to a setting that sometimes is hard to be at," says Galleos. "But it allows them to see that if I can do it, you can do it."Students in the club say it's been a fun experience. They hope other kids will listen and learn."When it turnes out good, it's really nice, just feeling like you accomplished something good," says Wilson Elementary 7th Grader Mecklin Montgomery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The La Boheme complex in the heart of North Park offers plenty of amenities. It even has a salon and Pilates studio at street level. "Pretty sure the rent's pretty up there," said Arthur Reynoso, walking by the building on Thursday. What most people don't know, however, is that 45 of the 224 condos in the building are affordable - to own. It's rare for one to come on the market, but a handful do each year. In fact, one is about to sell for 5,341, which is about 40 percent off the median condo price of 6,000 in North Park. The commission oversees about 250 for-sale affordable homes in San Diego - located in Carmel Valley, Black Mountain Ranch and North Park. Only four are for sale now, and Raman said all have been matched with buyers. However, they can list anytime. A homeowner can sell the property to anyone he or she wishes - so long as they are qualified - but the commission still maintains an interest list and is accepting applicants. Currently, there are about 275 households qualified for that list. The homes are not listed on the MLS. Still, there are restrictions when owning one of these units. Owners must live in them, and cannot rent out any part to supplement income. The commission checks that annually. Qualified buyers usually have 60 to 110 percent of area median income. The homes are deed-restricted for generally 45-50 years, meaning they have to be sold at an affordable price for that time span.
