PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Officials in Prairie Village say a garbage truck crashed into a house in Prairie Village Wednesday morning. Police said the driver fell out of the truck after turning onto Cedar Street from 83rd Terrace. The truck continued to roll and smashed into the corner of a home's garage.The homeowners were home at the time but were uninjured. A spokeswoman at Overland Park Regional Medical Center said the trash truck driver remains in critical condition."I opened the front door and the truck was barreling across my grass and all the sudden it hit and we shook,” said the homeowner, Rick Evrard.Michael Yates was remodeling a kitchen at a home across the street when he heard the crash.“All the sudden I heard the boom,” said Yates, “That’s when I looked out the window and I saw the truck was inside the house over there and the fellow was laying on the ground.”The man lying on the ground was the driver. Yates and Evrard ran to him to see if they could help him.“We got towels. (KGTV) — A Poway woman is taking legal action against the city after she says she fell ill from drinking contaminated water.The city on Nov. 30 issued a precautionary boil advisory after residents reported brownish water coming from their faucets. Poway officials reported that a storm drain backed up into a clear well, and said they issued the boil advisory in an abundance of caution. The advisory lasted about a week and was lifted Dec. 6. "Personally I felt ill after drinking the water, and my son, I had to take him to urgent care" Serino said. "So just in my own family, because we are Poway residents, I have two small children, it's affecting us as well and other people that we work with." (KGTV) - Students in Poway are trading their notebooks and pencils for needles and thread, as they make teddy bears this holiday season."This is hands on," says 5th Grade teacher Kimberlee Rizzuti. "They're making something. Some of these kids have never held a needle and thread."The 5th Graders at Painted Rock Elementary School do every part of the bear-building by hand, from drawing and cutting patterns to stuffing the bears. Parents help with the sewing machines in class."It's pretty hard, but it's fun to do," says 5th Grader Deacon Tilley.It's a project the school has done for about 35 years. The classes make about 100 bears total, all of which get donated to Interfaith Services of Escondido."We've kind of gotten away from hand made things," says Rizzuti. POWAY (CNS) - Authorities today identified a 69-year-old man who was gravely injured when he was struck by a car while walking in the same Poway intersection where sheriff's deputies were investigating a collision in which his wife struck and injured a pedestrian about 30 minutes earlier.Robert Tockstein of Ramona was struck shortly after 8:35 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Twin Peaks Road and Midland Road, and he died at an Escondido hospital early Wednesday morning, according to sheriff's Lt. Dustin Lopez and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.In the first crash, which happened around 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, Tockstein's wife struck a man who was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection, Lopez said. The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido where he was treated for minor injuries.While deputies investigated the first crash, Tockstein arrived at the scene, Lopez said.Tockstein moved his wife's vehicle and as he was walking back to the scene of the crash he was struck in the east crosswalk of Twin Peaks Road, the Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement.The driver of the Toyota Prius that struck Tockstein remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies, Lopez said.Tockstein was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. Wednesday, the Medical Examiner's Office said. 1390
