In cities across America, volunteers stand armed and ready to fight a different kind of virus infecting the planet."Everything's changed right now. Everything is to-go, so it's turned into a disposable society again," said Miah Earn.Earn lives in Hillcrest, an urban neighborhood in San Diego, California. She's out on the streets cleaning up liter, protecting the city she's called home for over 30 years."It's a mess out here. It really is," said Earn. "I'm seeing masks and gloves everywhere. I don't understand why people can't hit the garbage with them."Ian Monahan is with I Love a Clean San Diego and says they've seen more trash in general during the pandemic. "Increased packaging, whether it's to-go containers, whether it's PPE, whether it's shipping products. Unfortunately, it's ending up on the streets, and we've got to protect it, so it doesn't get into the ocean or waterways at the end of the day," said Monahan. During a global clean-up event this month, Monahan says for the first time they'll be tracking the amount of PPE collected. "It's actually a whole new anomaly in our clean-ups. We really didn't see them before. And mostly it's the disposable masks, which people think are paper, they're actually plastic," said Monahan. The blaze erupted just after 6:45 a.m. in the area of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon roads, and within an hour consumed about 50 acres. In a press conference just after 4 p.m. Monday, fire officials said the fire grew to 7,200 acres with 0% containment.Crews are battling flames and smoke amid strong wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph. The region is under a large plume of smoke creating unhealthy air quality prompting warnings to residents to stay indoors and limit outdoor activity. (WRTV) -- A woman who comforted a college student during her last moments after being struck by a school bus Monday hopes her family knows everyone did all they could for her.Fatima Hassuneh, 18, was crossing the street at the intersection of University Boulevard and New York Street on the Indiana University, Purdue University of Indianapolis campus around 1:30 p.m. Monday when a bus attempting to make a left-hand turn struck her.School officials said the bus was under contract with Indianapolis Public Schools, but owned by Durham Transportation. Witnesses and college officials say Hassuneh had the right of way.PREVIOUS | IUPUI?student struck, killed by school busHassuneh was a pre-med student who aspired to become a doctor, according to a post by the college's Muslim Student Association. “Fatima, an aspiring doctor, was a sophomore in biology and was known for her kind heart and sense of humor,” the Muslim Student Association wrote. “She was a gift among us and has returned to her Lord. INDIANAPOLIS — The first officers to respond to a reported stabbing in Indianapolis Sunday night walked into a chaotic scene: shards of broken glass strewn about the floor; a wig that had been forcibly ripped off someone’s head; and blood smeared from one end of an apartment’s hallway to another.Just inside one of the units at the St. George Apartments police found 45-year-old Vickie Jackson collapsed on the floor. She had been stabbed multiple times and was in extremely grave condition. She was pronounced dead 35 minutes later at Methodist Hospital.Surveillance video obtained by investigators shed light on the chaos.According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Marion County court Monday, a camera captured Jackson and another woman, later identified as 35-year-old Tashawanna Wilson, fighting in the hallway.In the video, police say, Wilson can be seen breaking a wine bottle against Jackson. Wilson then allegedly used the top portion of the broken bottle to stab Jackson numerous times.Police broadcast a description of Wilson, and an officer located her a short time later on the campus of the Tindley Genesis Academy at 24th Street and Capitol Avenue. Wilson was reportedly covered in blood and carrying a hatchet, which was also covered in blood.According to police, Wilson admitted to striking Jackson with a wine bottle during a fight and to going to a friend’s house to change clothing afterward.Wilson was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of murder and booked into the Marion County Jail without bond. As of Monday afternoon, prosecutors were still reviewing the case against her for a final charging decision.Court records show Wilson has previously been charged three times with battery in Marion County, most recently in February 2013.
