SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local group is teaming up with a non-profit organization to help fight the unemployment rates among young adults in San Diego. Casa Familia came up with the idea to start a coffee cart, training teenagers and 20-year-olds in different skills to run the coffee business. San Ysidro Health Center jumped on board to help with the funding of the project. Ana Melgoza is the Vice President of General Affairs for San Ysidro Health Center. She tells 10News it was an obvious decision."We said 'yes, of course' as soon as Casa Familia approached us with this wonderful and innovative endeavor," Melgoza said.El K-Fe hired six baristas, graduates of Casa Familiar's youth barista training program. The ,000 coffee cart now sits in the central hub of the health center. The baristas and managers are all young adults who have gone through many months of training. Francisco Dominguez is a student at Southwestern College and among the first to join the project."It’s kind of giving hope to the youth that think that they don't have a chance. They have a chance; we all have a chance. I started out like them now I'm looking forward to what the future has and what I can do with this and what we can do as a team," said Dominguez.Dominguez said the project is beneficial for many reasons but mostly for the skills learned at such a young age."Most jobs are 18 and older, so with this internship, it's 14 and older; so high school students: sophomores, freshmen, juniors, seniors in high school, can join the program, can get that job experience they need so once they graduate, they can get that job."The plan is to reinvest proceeds from the first El K-Fe coffee cart to establish more carts and create more youth job and training opportunities.  1820

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A non-profit in Logan Heights is asking for the neighborhood's help clean up a community space used by families and children. The Logan Heights Community Development Corporation owns the Gilliam Family Community Space. In March, they were forced to shut it down indefinitely because vandals were using the space overnight.  The area is covered in graffiti and littered with trash. The vandals were using the tree house overnight and damaging the fruits and vegetables in the community garden.  Now, the non-profit wants volunteers to help revamp the area. They plan on knocking the tree house down and eliminating the garden to deter the people coming in overnight. A large community cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at 2835 Imperial Avenue at 9 a.m. The non-profit relies solely on donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new court program in San Diego Juvenile Hall will help victims of sex trafficking find their way out of forced slavery.The RISE Court (Resiliency is Strength, Empowerment) will work with as many as 40 kids who have been victims in sex trafficking, giving them help to put their lives back together."We don't view them as an object to be used and abused," says District Attorney Summer Stephan. "We see them as whole human beings who need to be free to thrive in society."Many of the kids come to the court because they commit other crimes as part of their role in the sex trade. After they go through the criminal system, they fall right back into human trafficking because they have nowhere else to go. Sometimes, it's their pimp who is waiting to pick them up outside of Juvenile Hall .The court will work to find the underlying cause that drove the kids into human trafficking in the first place, and help them break the cycle."Some of them don't recognize themselves as victims or they don't see it as a problem or they don't think it's a big deal that they're involved in certain activities because they think it's normal," says Judge Carolyn Caietti, who will oversee the courtroom.Human sex trafficking is San Diego's 2nd largest underground economy, behind drug sales. A recent study by the University of San Diego estimates it brings in 0 million per year.Meanwhile, San Diego ranks in the top 13 of cities in the nation for human sex trafficking, according to the FBI. Taddeo bought an electric bike in October."I feel like a fast biker," said Taddeo.Pedaling more will cause the motor to kick in when he needs it.  For Taddeo, it's a big difference compared to riding a pedal bike."17 miles per hour up a hill.  Before it was four or five miles per hour, huffing and puffing," said Taddeo.That means arriving at work less tired and sweaty.  Long popular in Europe and Asia, e-biking has surged in popularity in the U.S. in the past few years.Taddeo's commute from Carmel Valley to Miramar College took about 30 minutes, only a few minutes slower than his average drive."I feel good.  Blood flowing, refreshed and ready to work," said Taddeo.He also feels pretty good about his savings.  Before, he spent about 0 a month on gas for his commute.  That's now down to pennies, basically the cost of charging the motor battery."It'll definitely go a long way.
