SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After weeks of large crowds, no masks or social distancing in Ocean Beach, the City of San Diego put together a compliance team to educate people about the county’s public health order.A team of about 12 people consisting of code compliance, parking enforcement, and park rangers handed out face masks to those who didn’t have them on and asked for compliance.“There was unacceptable levels of people coming together, congregating together getting really, really close without masks or social distancing,” said Joel Day, the senior advisor for COVID Response and Recovery with the City of San Diego. “We’re asking people don’t congregate here, please wear a mask if you’re around other people, and please socially distance and so far it’s looking pretty great.”Within one hour, Day said the team handed out about 300 masks.Earlier in the day, residents noted that Veterans Plaza in Ocean Beach appeared to be less crowded. But as the sun went down, the drum circle returned, and so did the crowds. They cleared out by about 10:30 PM.Resident Tim Johnson said home and business owners have had to deal with the same scene repeatedly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego restaurant group is turning to an old trend to try to make it through the latest shutdown order.The order, which went into effect Monday, relegated restaurants to takeout and delivery only, decimating their bottom line and forcing them to cut jobs and reduce hours."Right now the way it's been, it's not profitable," said Alex Navarrete, general manager of Karina's restaurant group. "We're giving everybody one shifts, two shifts, but what is that going to do?"Karina's restaurant group has nine establishments around the county. Prior to the pandemic, it had dozens of workers at each location. Now, it has four workers on the clock at anytime at each. "They all want to work, I just don't have hours now, since we're only doing takeout," Navarrete said. Navarette is now trying to go above and beyond for his company and his employees - even as his options are limited. Four of the group's restaurants -- two in the Otay Ranch mall, and others in Chula Vista and La Jolla -- will try to take advantage of their parking lots. They're essentially turning into car hops, where patrons get their food delivered to their cars and eat in the parking lot. "This would be a perfect time to get that cobwebs off the motor home and bring it out, bring the family out," he said. Since then, Nguyen quit her job, and their business blossomed. They went from having twenty deliveries to now more than 120 in a week. They hired more staff and outgrew their space almost immediately."We needed to figure out a spatial solution so that we can continue to grow," Nguyen said.Their solution was Warden's father's backyard in Encinitas, specifically their chicken coop. Warden and his father renovated the 300 square foot space to have a greenhouse and an office. It is not your typical warehouse, but they say it is perfect."It's like working with what you have and being able to pivot and do whatever it takes to take your business to the next step," Nguyen said.They say it is this kind of ingenuity, a loving family, and loyal customers that keep them focused. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Americans are being warned to not eat any romaine lettuce after concerns over a new E-Coli outbreak. At least 32 people in 11 states have gotten sick. One of San Diego’s largest produce suppliers is jumping into action. Speciality Produce supplies hundreds of restaurants and caterers around the county with fresh produce. Owner Bob Harrington says he had to notify each customer about the CDC warning. Harrington says employees went through a list, of about 9 pages, and called customers warning them to throw out all of their romaine. “I think there’s a really good system in place so whenever something like this does happen we can respond really quickly,” says Harrington. Employees spent almost 2 hours calling all of the customers. “I think most companies, like us, practice a couple times a year just to do a dry run to make sure we’re ready to do a recall at a moments notice and finish it within minutes.” Specialty produce has about five to seven different types of romaine in its warehouse. All of them were pulled from the main floor. Harrington says he will replace the romaine from all of his customers with a new green, free of charge.
