SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Port of San Diego announced Monday a three-year pilot project to test the use of concrete tide pools as a shoreline stabilizing tool. The concrete company ECOncrete will analyze the efficacy of its concrete tide pools as a possible replacement for traditional shoreline-stabilizing tools like rock armoring. The concrete tide pools will also serve as ecosystems for aquatic animals and organisms that live in natural tide pools. The tide pools interlock like puzzle pieces and are made of low carbon concrete that, according to the company, is environmentally safe and tailored to the environment in which its placed. ECOncrete plans to install 72 of the concrete tide pools across three areas of Harbor Island's shoreline, according to the Port of San Diego. ``ECOncrete's Coastal Star tide pools have great potential to provide many benefits for San Diego Bay,'' said Port of San Diego Board Chair Garry Bonelli. ``The Port looks forward to seeing if they can provide shoreline stabilization, help guard against coastal flooding, and improve the ecology of our bay water.'' The project is the eighth approved in the Port of San Diego's Blue Economy Incubator, which is intended to streamline the process in which businesses can launch pilot projects for so-called blue technology. The port launched the incubator program in 2016 as a way to collaborate with businesses focused on restoring ecosystems, improving water quality and fisheries and monitoring the environment. ECOncrete plans to monitor the tide pools every six months to examine how they could replace current shoreline stabilizers in the San Diego Bay. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego announced a partnership with county officials Monday to address staffing and capacity concerns for a program that assists frequent 911 callers and reduces the strain on the county's emergency response centers.The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's Resource Access Program launched as a pilot program in 2008 and has both contracted and expanded since.The program connects frequent 911 callers, many of whom deal with homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse and other medical issues, to local health and housing services.According to the city, roughly 90% of people in the RAP who call 911 more than 30 times annually are homeless. Although the program's members make up fewer than 1% of the city's population, they generate roughly 20% of its 911 calls.``Using a data-driven approach, we are identifying those San Diegans who need specialized care and connecting them with the help they need so they don't have to call 911,'' Faulconer said. ``It's a shining example of how the city and county can work together to find solutions to our region's mental health crisis.''The program reduced its size in 2017 due to a lack of funding, according to the city. As a result, the number of patients with more than 50 911 calls per year increased from one in 2016 to 26 in 2018. Gavin Newsom Tuesday offered a grim reminder that the disease remains deadly, saying the state has ordered 5,000 more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom said 142 coronavirus-related deaths were reported statewide in the past 24 hours. Over the past week, the state averaged 163 deaths per day -- up from 41 per day one month ago."Think about if we continue down the path we're on, what that Jan. 14th number might look like if we do not do what we need to do, which is not just to avail ourselves when we can to the vaccine, but to continue to wear these face coverings and minimize mixing to the extent possible because of what's occurred in the last 30 days," Newsom said.According to the governor, the state has 60 53-foot refrigerated storage units on standby at counties and hospitals across California for use is local facilities become overwhelmed by virus fatalities."We just had to order 5,000 additional body bags ... and we just distributed them down to San Diego, Los Angeles, Inyo counties," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free.
