SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A mother and son who died in a shooting at a Linda Vista home earlier this week were identified by San Diego police.On Dec. 7, at around 3:15 a.m., officers were called to a home in the 2200 block of Crandall Drive in response to a shooting.Responding officers found a man and a woman inside the home with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies, according to police.The woman, identified as 46-year-old Hue Le, died from her injuries at the hospital.RELATED: Mother dead, son gravely injured in Linda Vista shootingThe injured man, identified as the deceased woman’s 28-year-old son Justin Le, was placed on life support but police said he passed away on Tuesday evening.According to police, Justin Le’s injuries appeared to be self-inflicted.The case is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, San Diego police said.No other details on the case were released. 895

The incident happened near Newsome Drive and Odom Street around 1:19 a.m. Sunday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report is looking into why there is a shortage of homes for sale around the country. According to the report by NerdWallet, in October of 2017, the US had a 3.9-month supply of existing homes for resale, meaning at that pace, it would have taken 3.9 months to sell all the homes on the market. According to NerdWallet, a supply under six months places home buyers at a disadvantage. The report identifies six reasons why the housing supply is so low. 1. Boomers aren’t movingOver three-fourths of baby boomers own their own homes, according to the report, meaning millennials don’t have enough homes available to buy. Low mortgage rates The report points out that interest rates on outstanding mortgages averaged about 3.8 percent over the last three years. As mortgage rates rise, fewer people are interested in selling and getting into new mortgages. 4. Entry-level homes ignored by buildersIn the first nine months of 2017, nearly 500,000 newly-built homes were sold of which 55 percent sold for 0,000 or more. Regulations add costThe report points out the homebuilders say environmental protection, infrastructure fees and rules that specify lot sizes all add tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of building every single home. Owners want a restricted supplyFinally, the report found that local zoning and land-use regulations are enacted by officials elected by the people. The report says those officials are only responding to constituents who want a limit on the number of homes that can be built in a neighborhood. Elected officials can also set a minimum square footage for homes, further limiting supply. “There are regulations that are more about the neighbors’ sensibilities than they are about the safety of the people living in the houses,” says Miriam Axel-Lute, associate director of the National Housing Institute. “It’s neighbors who want their property values to go up, in most cases, who are insistent upon some excess safety design standards or minimum lot sizes or other things,” Lute says. “They either want their property values to go up or they don’t want, quote, ‘the wrong sort of people’ in their neighborhoods. This is the pressure behind a lot of the most damaging regulations out there.” 3097

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new poll shows many San Diegans would “definitely” or “probably” get a COVID-19 vaccine if it were available to them at little or no cost.An ABC 10News/San Diego Union-Tribune scientific poll recently asked 500 San Diego adults about their thoughts on a potential coronavirus vaccine, including who should get a vaccine first and their feelings towards vaccinations in general.Among the questions participants were asked: “A vaccine for the Coronavirus may soon be available to the public. If clinical trials go well, and a vaccine is available to you that is either free or costs just a few dollars, would you definitely get the vaccine? Probably get the vaccine? Probably not get the vaccine? Or definitely not get the vaccine?”The poll shows 38% of San Diegans would definitely get the vaccine; 32% would probably get the vaccine; 12% would probably not get it; 10% would definitely not get it; 8% are not sure.The release of the poll comes on the same day biotech company Moderna announced its COVID-19 vaccine candidate is 94.5% effective.The company’s chief medical officer, Dr. Tal Zaks, called the news one of the greatest moments of his life, adding, “It is absolutely amazing to me to be able to develop this vaccine and see the ability to prevent symptomatic disease with such high efficacy."Moderna reported no major side effects, and that unlike Pfizer’s vaccine announcement last week, Moderna’s vaccine does not require extreme refrigeration temperatures -- something many experts agreed would be a significant advantage for distribution.The federal government has said the coronavirus vaccine would be free, and some experts have suggested that with the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization -- which both companies are expected to apply for in the next few weeks -- there could be enough doses manufactured to immunize 20 million people by early next year.Other poll questions that San Diegans were asked: 1948

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of Americans filed for unemployment for the first time last week, leading to increased competition for the jobs that are available.The Labor Department reported Thursday that nearly 2.9 million workers are now seeking weekly payments from the government amid coronavirus-related closures. In San Diego County, the Workforce Partnership reports that it has received notice from 92 companies totaling roughly 12,000 workers — those notices, however, are voluntary, so the actual number could be much higher. Those workers could receive up to 0 per week from the state of California, plus an additional 0 from the federal government's stimulus package. "I'm in an industry that is vulnerable to situations like this in the future, so what do I have to do about it to guarantee that this doesn't happen to me and my family again in the future? That's my question," said Sean O'Hara, who recently lost his job as general manager of the now-closed Splash Cafe at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, which is operated by the French Gourmet. "All the restaurants are closed that I can see.
