A Valrico, Florida mom is sharing her experience on social media after she said she was asked asked to wait outside the Plant City DMV office with her infant daughter.Liz Gatley, a stay-at-home mother of three girls, said she was asked by a representative at the Plant City Tag Office to take her one-year-old daughter outside or come back another day. In a picture on Facebook you can see at least four young children, one in a stroller, and the mothers waiting outside the office. Gatley said her daughter, as well as the other children were not being disruptive and said she's a firm believer of taking them outside if they were. In the post, Gatley wrote, "I was so mad but I was also embarrassed and confused," she said. She went on to say, "for you to embarrass me and be extremely rude, unapologetic and not understanding the fact many moms are stay at home moms with little to no help, is what bothers me."Gatley said she and the mothers stood outside with no bench or air conditioning as they waited two hours to be seen at the office. At the end of the post she said, "if you have children, go to another location!"Doug Belden with the Hillsborough County Tax Collector's spoke with Tampa-based WFTS on Friday afternoon. He apologized to Gatley and the experience at the Plant City office noting it was not the friendly and efficient policy that is in place.Belden said he called Gatley directly and told her he would meet with her at her earliest convenience, even throughout the weekend to help get the facts of what happened. Belden said he is outraged that Gatley experienced this at his office, and that children are always welcome in the offices across Hillsborough County.He went on to say that he will be looking into this employee, and taking appropriate measures -- and even went as far to say he plans to check with the landlord to see if they can install benches outside the office. We asked Belden if Gatley should have gone back inside, and he said "absolutely" adding if he found out about this situation at the time, he would have taken care of this immediately. Gatley said Belden was sincere in his apologies and plans to take him up on his offer of meeting with her as soon as possible.  2349

A volunteer in the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine trial in Brazil has reportedly died.According to Bloomberg, the participant hadn't received the company's vaccine, but it's unclear how they died.Brazilian outlet Globo reported that the volunteer was a 28-year-old doctor from Rio de Janeiro who'd been working as a COVID-19 frontline worker.Reuters reported that Anvisa, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency, said the trial would continue but did not provide any further details.Following the news, AstraZeneca shares dropped about 1%, CNBC reported.AstraZeneca's trial has been on hold since Sept. 8, after an unexplained illness popped up in a patient in the United Kingdom.According to Reuters, AstraZeneca plans to resume its trial sometime this week. 770

A task that once took days has been reduced to hours, thanks to the use of drones and laser technology.The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is mapping the shoreline of San Diego's coast  to study beach and cliff erosion. The new technology, paid for by the California State Parks and the Army Corps of Enginners, has made that task much easier."This is allowing us to get a more comprehensive view of the beach and the cliffs," says lead researcher Adam Young.Young and his team will drive the entire coast from La Jolla to Oceanside twice a year. They're using a laser enhanced camera and a drone to create a 3D map of the coast. Over time, they'll be able to compare the maps and see where and how the beach is eroding."We're going to have to start looking to the future," Young says. "And we're not going to be able to prepare properly unless we collect data and understand what's happening now."In addition to the twice yearly studies, Young says they'll look at sand levels after storms and at how sand moves throughout the year.Young says it can help predict what areas of the cliffs are susceptible to collapse. 1139

A new political ad could be masquerading as an official correction to the sample ballots that hit mailboxes across San Diego.It's the latest swing in the fight over the state's recent 12-cent per gallon gas tax hike.The mailer, sent to two million Californians mail-in voters, is titled "Election Ballot **Correction**" and says the correct title for Proposition 6 should be "Gas Tax Repeal Initiative.”Proposition 6 is on the November ballot to repeal the state's gas tax increase and new vehicle registration fees. The state raised the levies last year to generate billions of dollars in infrastructure projects. Dave McCulloch, communications director for Reform California, which sent out the mailer, says the Attorney General's ballot language does not make that clear. It instead reads that Prop 6 "eliminates certain road repair and transportation funding...repeals a 2017 transportation law's taxes and fees designated for road repairs and public transportation."We sent out this mailer to make sure that everyone in California knows Prop 6 is the gas tax repeal," McCulloch said. "We know that when people discover that Yes on 6 means to repeal the gas tax, they're much more in favor of it because they realize what it is.”The Attorney General's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The mailer instructs voters to keep it with their sample ballot mailed to them. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said ballot language is often contentions. But he noted the gas tax increase has been so heavily covered that most people will associate with Prop 6. He says this mailer reinforces that. "When they get to their ballot on election day, they're not going to see repeal the gas tax," Kousser said. "They're going to see a proposal written legal language that says exactly what this bill does, which is it changes transportation fees and cuts funding for things." That mailer does include disclosures that it's not official and that Reform California paid for it. A toddler hanging from the roof after crawling out of his bedroom window managed to come away unscathed after falling into a passerby's arms.It's a situation that could have ended tragically if not for the quick actions of a good Samaritan.Police report Jill Harper happened to be driving by the 1300 block of Mills Street in Sandusky, Ohio and saw the toddler hanging from the edge of the roof. She ran over to help.According to the police report, the child fell into her arms, and she brought him inside."When I caught him I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, I caught him,'" said Harper."When I started pounding on the house, that's when he fell, and my hand was pounding.  So when he fell, he kind of came back and hit my arm, and then I caught him."Police said they did not notice any obvious bumps and bruises. The Sandusky Fire Department responded to the scene, looked him over and found no injuries.Kelsie Hellman, the boy's mother's cousin, signed a refusal form, not wanting him to be transported to the hospital, according to police.Sandusky police said the boy is currently in the custody of Summit County Children Services. Hellman told police she is trying to gain custody of the boy, whom she has looked after since he was 3 months old.How did he get out there? Hellman told police she was using the bathroom when the incident happened. She said the boy must have gone around the baby gate she put at the bottom of her stairs, allowing him to get up to his room where the window was left slightly open. The boy then apparently slid through the window, which opens onto the roof.Meanwhile, Sandusky Police Detective Kevin Youskievicz told Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland, he believes the child could have suffered serious injuries if Harper hadn't acted quickly."I can only describe her as a hero, she's a hero," Youskievicz said."Everyone says we need heroes, she is one,"According to the report, Hellman said her husband was fixing the window so the boy could not crawl out of it again. 2079
