Sault Ste. LSSU's word banishment tradition is now in its fifth decade, and was started by the late W. T. Rabe, a public relations director at Lake Superior State University.Through the years, LSSU has received tens of thousands of nominations for the list, which now includes more than 1,000 entries. This year's list is comprised of nominations that come from the 589

Rep. Tim Ryan announced Thursday that he's running for president. The announcement on his campaign website came shortly before the Democrat appeared on "The View.""As a congressman from Youngstown, Ohio for almost 20 years, I've watched the American Dream slip through the fingers of many Americans," Ryan says on the website. "That's why I am running for President. It's time to do something."Ryan, who has served in Congress since 2003, began considering a 2020 bid in 2018, as he traveled across the country stumping for Democrats running for office and, indirectly, testing the waters on a presidential bid.Ryan enters the presidential race as a longshot candidate with less name recognition than most candidates and a far smaller political network. The field is also already sizable and growing: Democrats are waiting on former Vice President Joe Biden to decide on a run, along with former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado, Gov. Steve Bullock of Montana and Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts."As I travel through Ohio and the country, I've been inspired by the solutions that exist. On every issue, from manufacturing, to health care, to schools and education, to taking care of and healing our Vets, I find brilliant Americans who are innovating and creating REAL solutions," Ryan wrote. "And our current government and leaders are in the way of these solutions being implemented on a broad scale. We must invest in and bring the solutions that are working to communities across the country."Ryan has become most known in Democratic circles for his opposition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holding her leadership positions. But those efforts have failed, and even Ryan voted for Pelosi earlier this year when Democrats picked their next House leader after taking back the chamber in 2018.Ryan told CNN in February that he was "seriously considering" a presidential run, but that he didn't "feel any pressure for any timeline at this point.""The country is divided," he added. "We can't get anything done because of these huge divisions that we have."Ryan, according to advisers close to him, plans to run as the Democrats' best hope for winning back white, working class voters who left the party in 2016. The likelihood of a Ryan run increased earlier this year when Sen. Sherrod Brown, a better-known Ohio Democrat, declined to run for President.Ryan told CNN in 2018 that he felt a pull between challenging Pelosi, which he didn't do, and vying for a chance to take on Trump."The speaker thing is obviously a narrower universe," he said. "But I do well with the public. I do well with voters. I enjoy it. I enjoy learning from them and getting to know them. And I have always been that kind of person. It is part of my personality."The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved. 2880

Severe weather plagued several states throughout the Midwest over the weekend, killing one person and damaging at least one building.Vickie Darnel, 64, died from drowning Sunday after she drove into a flooded creek crossing in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, according to Lt. Kera Philippi, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.Philippi says that Darnel's vehicle was swept off the roadway around 4:30 a.m. Sunday near the border of Arkansas. The area saw a number of flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service over the weekend. The National Weather Service is sending an assessment team to South Bend, Indiana, after a tornado touched down in the area and destroyed at least one building. The building was the site of Growing Kids daycare facility, according to Aaron Miller, dispatch supervisor for St. Joseph County Public Safety Communication Center.Miller told CNN that the building suffered extensive damage and there were several reports of trees down throughout St. Joseph County.Missouri State Highway Patrol along with the Missouri Department of Conservation and several local agencies performed multiple water rescues Sunday for people whose vehicles were in the water. They also rescued people who were stranded by high water due to heavy rainfall, according to the Missouri Department of Public Safety.A subdivision in Neosho, Missouri, and parts of Roaring River State Park had to be evacuated, although it was unclear how many people had to leave, the Missouri Department of Public Safety said. The band of weather that caused all of this chaos is called a frontal boundary and it acts as a cold front but doesn't actually have any cold air behind it.The mixture of the boundary layer is slightly cooler dry air and hot humid air which can cause intense storms. 1821

Shawn Juhl returned to what was his small business in North Bend, Nebraska this week, after the city was impacted by floods. "It's rough, yeah,” he says. “You know; the emotions are up and down." Emotions are running high through several Midwest states today, as people realize the devastation high flood waters caused.Thousands of acres of farmland saturated for days, combined with the potential animal losses, may put some farmers out of a livelihood. Farm animals weren’t the only animals affected by the storm. In Freeport, Illinois, firefighters used front-end loaders to rescue 14 dogs and eight cats, all for homeowners who had to no way into their neighborhoods. "My wife was at work, and I came back into town, and at that point I realized I couldn't get across the bridge, get into my home," says Freeport resident Shawn Starry. At Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, the rising flood waters have brought yet another concern. Col. Dave Norton says the water line was almost to the top of the windows at the headquarters of their security forces teams on-base. About a third of the base, which has 80 structures, has been under flood water since Saturday. "Places we would have meetings in routinely now have literally feet of water in them,” says Col. Norton. When an oily sheen began showing up on the surface of the flood water this week, officials feared a fuel tank may have ruptured. That doesn't appear to have happened, but as a precaution they've brought in teams to place yellow plastic tubing around the area to contain the substance. They hope waters recede by the weekend, so clean-up efforts can begin.“This recovery effort will not be quick,” Col. Norton says. 1694

Revenge is sweet. But Mark Rober's glitter bomb trap for package thieves proves it can be a bit messy, too.Rober is clearly a smart guy; a former NASA engineer, he worked on the Mars Curiosity rover. But for anyone who's gotten a package stolen off a doorstep, he's now a hero."Something needs to be done to take a stance against dishonest punks like this," Rober said in a now-viral YouTube video. After having a package stolen from his doorstep, Rober decided to use his engineering background to serve up some retribution on would-be thieves."If anyone was going to make a revenge bait package and over-engineer the crap out of it, it was going to be me," he said. The package would contain a pound of fine glitter plus some potent fart spray. The glitter would burst out when opened; the latter would spray five times, every 30 seconds. But Robert went one step further -- including four phones recording the thieves' reactions. A GPS tracker in the phones would let him know where a package ultimately ended up.If he couldn't recover the package, the video would at least automatically upload to the cloud.Once completed, he slapped a packing label addressed from the "Home Alone" character Kevin McCallister to movie villains Harry and Marv -- a nice, figurative bow on the present. Then Rober just needed to wait and let the package rain pain.In the YouTube video, some "victims" opened packages in their cars, with glitter being tossed into every nook and cranny. Others opened packages in their houses; one even was even filmed trying to vacuum the mess up.Still, package thieves remain a problem; click 1620
