SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doctor's orders: Make room for a day at San Diego's Coronado Beach.In his annual list of America's best beaches, Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University known as "Dr. Beach," named the local beach among the best in the country. A highly specialized group of employees at public utility plants who have jobs that are impossible to do at home are some of these workers. Some workers at the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant are going above and beyond to make sure our drinking water is safe from the coronavirus. When we think of heroes during this coronavirus pandemic, we immediately think of medical staff, grocery workers, and delivery people. But remember to thank those who continue to provide water. "The plant cannot run without these operators," Jessica Jones, communications director at the desalination plant said. RELATED: What's open during California's coronavirus 'stay at home' orderAt the desalination plant, ten healthy employees who have what are considered "mission critical" jobs have voluntarily self-quarantined themselves at work. They have been living at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant since last Thursday. For 21 days, they will be on 12-hour shifts and sleeping in their RV's parked inside the facility."Being completely locked down is the only way we can ensure that these operators remain healthy," Jones said.Having no human contact with the outside world, these quarantined employees will get food delivered to them at the gate. "All treatment plants have multiple processes that will either kill or inactivate bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants in the water," Jim Fisher, director of operations and maintenance at the San Diego County Water Authority, said. So experts say there is no need for buying water bottles in bulk. "You can have confidence that the water is safe," Fisher said. "The water is continually being treated, and it's monitored 24 hours a day. The COVID-19 is not anything unusual from a water treatment perspective."The plant will soon start a campaign for local students to write letters to the quarantined workers at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Friday morning, SANDAG’s board will decide how to spend 0 million throughout San Diego County between roads, public transportation and other projects. According to a budget released by SANDAG, most of the funds will go towards transportation, not roads. The move has some throughout the county concerned that not enough will go toward roads in need of repair. “I'm pragmatic about it and I do worry about the fact that these tend to suck up all of the money and leave nothing left for highways,” said El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells.The concern comes after SANDAG announced “5 Big Moves.” The project focuses on the future of public transportation. Read all five points of the plan below: Complete CorridorsThe backbone of a complete transportation system that leverages technology, pricing, and connectivity to repurpose how both highways and local roads are used and managed. Complete Corridors would increase safety, capacity, and efficiency; provide dedicated space for high-speed transit and other pooled services; manage demand in real-time; and maximize use of existing roadways. Local roads are designed and operated to equally accommodate all users, including transit, cars, bikes, pedestrians, and commercial vehicles. Features may include dynamically managed curb space, transit amenities, bike facilities, pedestrian refuges, or smart intersection systems. Smart intersection systems would improve safety for all modes through use of sensors and alerts to vehicles and individuals, and could give transit priority treatments that make transit faster and more reliable. Wireless charging at parking facilities, intersections, and/or roadways will support future induction charging for zero-emission vehicles. Complete Corridors will provide connections to the Mobility Hubs network and infrastructure to support use of shared, on-demand Flexible Fleets. Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered a statewide "limited Stay at Home Order" for San Diego County and other counties in the state's COVID-19 purple tier.In a release on the governor’s website, the state’s curfew will take effect Saturday, Nov. 21. It will be from 10 p.m.-5 a.m.The curfew is set to expire on Dec. 21 at 5 a.m.The state said the restrictions are similar to the stay at home order issued in March.This time, however, the order only applies to counties in California's purple tier status under its COVID-19 reopening plan.Newsom said, “The virus is spreading at a pace we haven’t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge. We are sounding the alarm. It is crucial that we act to decrease transmission and slow hospitalizations before the death count surges. We’ve done it before and we must do it again."San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox, in response to the statewide curfew, said, "Look, we know we all want to see this pandemic end. And believe me, we do too. But those who float the public health orders, those who refuse to use masks and facial coverings are just prolonging the misery."“Bottom line is, wear those damn masks out there. Socially distance. And the sooner we do that, the sooner we’re going to get through this crisis,” said San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.Gore says they are devoting four two-men deputy teams to work full time with county compliance officers.He says they are not going door-to-door but following up on complaints about businesses or entities violating public health orders. They will attempt voluntary compliance and education first. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For six years a Camp Pendleton Recon Marine allowed filmmakers full access into his life, which at one point hit rock bottom. The GI Film Festival documentary, Homemade, aims to start a conversation on taking better care of our returning veterans. Staff Sgt. Adam Sorensen was injured in 2010 by an explosive device in Afghanistan; 100 pieces of shrapnel pierced his body, and he required two surgeries.He could no longer serve in a combat role and spent the next couple of years as an instructor. The documentary follows Sorensen as he navigates civilian life and the effects of Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, and addiction on his marriage, family, and work.Filmmakers Danielle Bernstein and Jason Maris included scenes that can be hard to watch. "For me, it ultimately is to help people, because that's the whole reason I really wanted to make something that looked at how is this affecting people, families," said Maris.
