Every year around this time, Marta Valenzuela Moreno puts together an altar to remember family members who have passed.“I have here to present my traditional family altar of Day of the Dead,” Valenzuela Moreno said.It’s part of her tradition for el Día de los Muertos. In English, Day of the Dead.Day of the Dead is recognized on November 2. Ann Macca runs the Day of the Dead program in her community.“El Día de los Muertos is an ancient holiday," Macca said. "It comes from Aztec traditions where way back hundreds of years ago, they would celebrate for a whole month in the summer, and they would honor their deceased loved ones. And when the Catholic church showed up in Mexico, they brought with them all their holidays and traditions. And so when the Catholic church met the Aztec traditions, they came together and Day of the Dead was born.”Families of Mexican and Guatemalan descent create an altar for their ancestors. They thoughtfully arrange photos of their loved ones who have passed and surrounding the photos, they place their relative’s favorite foods, along with other items that honor what they loved and did while on Earth.Even though they happen around the same time, el Día de los Muertos should not be confused with Halloween.“Day of the Dead is a celebration of joy and welcoming where Halloween -- all of those skeletons, ghosts and ghouls -- those are spirits that you want to scare away," Macca said. "So, Halloween those are scary things, but in Day of the Dead, they’re your friends and your family and you want to see them and bring them back.”“I can talk to them, sing to them and argue with them,” Valenzuela Moreno said.Valenzuela Moreno says she feels a full range of emotions as she spends time with her mother, brothers and sisters who have passed.“Sadness, happiness, rejoice... there are times to pray, to cry, because memories come back of all of them.”Memories we have of relatives and the passion that emerges from them are things we all have in common. Macca says that’s likely the reason why the holiday has now entered mainstream culture.“I think a lot of people who don’t come from a latinx tradition who don’t have Mexican or Guatemalan heritage are now starting to embrace day of the dead because it’s such a wonderful way to remember your loved ones,” Macca said.Valenzuela Moreno says she welcomes any and all cultures to adopt the tradition she holds near and dear to her heart.“The community needs to embrace this kind of celebration and feel part of it. And not be ashamed or scared.”Valenzuela Moreno says she hopes future generations in her family will continue building an altar every year on Día de los Muertos, so she too can visit when her time comes to fly away. 2728

(KGTV) - Surveillance video captured a man in a truck treating an Escondido neighborhood like a dumping ground.In the video, a white truck pulls up in the 800 block of North Citrus Avenue just before 1 p.m.  The driver goes to the back and casually pulls the couch onto the street, before going back to the truck to toss out a piece of carpet. He then drives off."Just makes our neighborhood look bad and ugly, and we don't want that," said Gil Gomez who lives feet from where the couch was dumped.His frustrations growing every time he watches the video, recorded from his Ring camera. That's because the truck appears to be a newer model Ford F-150."If you can afford to buy a brand new truck, you can afford to get rid of this thing properly," said Gomez.Gomez fears this type thing could attract more dumping."It might happen around the corner next time. That is the type of culture we cannot stand for," said Gomez.Gomez posted the video on the Neighbors by Ring app to track the person down and to send a message to would-be dumpers. "Not in our neighborhood. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Plans are underway to reinvigorate Escondido's historic downtown, with new businesses and plans to make the area more pedestrian friendly. One of the new ventures is the first-of-its-kind. "Escondido now has really started to invest a lot of time, a lot of effort, and they're putting a lot of money into the downtown district," said Nick Corona, a nationally recognized homebrewer who lives in San Marcos.When Corona started homebrewing in 2012, the dream was always to start a brewery, which he named Five Suits Brewing. Now that dream is coming true in a way he couldn't have envisioned back then. "We're looking to hopefully become a little bit more of a draw for Escondido."The plan is to house four different businesses under one roof, three of which are craft beverage manufacturers: beer, gin, and mead.The gin distillery is Stoke Distilling Co. and the meadery is Good Omen. "Nobody else in California and I don't even think in the U.S., has a storefront place that you can go to that has a brewery, a winery, and a distillery, with a restaurant all in the same location," said Brian LaMere, Owner of Good Omen.The owners of Carlsbad's Notorious Burgers will be supplying the food, which will consist of craft tacos and Mexican street food. The project is still waiting on approval from the alcohol and beverage agencies, but Corona says they've identified a 14,000 sq/ft property on Grand Ave. "It will be a destination, there's no doubt about it," said Corona. As far as making downtown more friendly to pedestrians, city planners say there are plans to widen the sidewalks, create more parking, and add art. Corona says he's excited for the future, "We're proud of our brand, we're proud of what we're bringing, but for me personally I just want to bring people something that opens their eyes." 1842

  

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors are calling for action from the City of Encinitas after a pair of crashes along a stretch of Manchester Avenue."It's too fast," says Judy Blanchard, who lives on Manchester. "They need to do some traffic calming."Friday, a car lost control coming around a curve near the 4200 block of Manchester Avenue and crashed into a light pole. Two days before that, a pair of cars collided near the same spot.People who live nearby say speed on the road is a constant problem."People gun it. They really do," says Blanchard. "All these wannabe fast drivers, it's exciting for them to come through the curve."Blanchard had a car crash through her front yard a few years ago. It almost knocked down her prized palm tree, Bubba.City officials tell 10News they studied the road in 2017. They sent this statement from the City Manager's Office:“Based on the California Vehicle Code (CVC) and California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA-MUTCD), an Engineering and Traffic Study (Speed Survey) was conducted in 2017 which showed the 85th percentile speed (the speed at or below which 85 percent of all vehicles are observed to travel under) on this roadway was 47 mph. As a result, the speed limit was set by the City at 40 mph which is the lowest speed limit legally allowed based on the results of the Speed Survey. The Sheriff’s Office has been notified to increase enforcement efforts along the corridor.” Neighbors say that may not be enough. They say the street needs more warning signs and the city should reduce lanes from two to one near Rancho Santa Fe Road. Fans of Nutella are going absolutely nuts after the brand changed its recipe.Nutella said in a post on its German Facebook page on Tuesday that it was "fine tuning" its recipe. It said the addition of more powdered milk increased the spread's sugar content.The brand's U.S. Twitter page also confirmed the recipe had changed. The news was met with howls of rage on the internet, where loyal customers professed their love for the old recipe."OMG!! They are changing the recipe of #Nutella!!!," wrote one Twitter user. "NOOOOOOOO HOW DARE THEY!! Leave the sugar & coco alone!!!"The recipe change was first publicized by the Hamburg Consumer Protection Center, which said last week that the tweak had made the chocolate spread's color lighter.The group said that, according to the ingredient list printed on Nutella packaging, the proportion of skimmed milk powder had increased to 8.7% from 7.5%."Cocoa has slipped back in the list of ingredients," it said. "As the color of the new Nutella is lighter, we assume that more milk powder was added at the expense of cocoa."Ferrero, the Italian company that makes Nutella, declined repeated requests from CNN for more information about the recipe change.But its fans appear to have already made up their minds."Nutella is sweet enough," wrote another Twitter user. "Why on earth change something that no one has a problem with?"Nutella was created after World War II, when a cocoa shortage in Italy required pastry makers to get creative. One chef, Pietro Ferrero, created the spread using hazelnuts, sugar and a bit of cocoa.Ferrero is not the only chocolate maker to face a public backlash over changes to a beloved product.British Toblerone fans reacted with horror last year after discovering that the distance between the triangular chunks in the chocolate bar had expanded overnight.Mondelez International, which produces the airport shopping staple, said they were forced to shrink the bars from 170 grams to 150 grams because of rising ingredient costs.It may not be the last recipe change for Nutella.Ferrero has been working in recent years to gain more control over the production and supply of hazelnuts -- a critical ingredient in Nutella and Ferrero Rocher treats.There are limited places where the nuts can be grown, with the majority coming from Turkey.Tom Molnar, a plant biologist and hazelnut expert at Rutgers University, warned that any disruption to hazelnut supplies would be deeply problematic."If there's a crop failure in Turkey, they're not going to be able to sustain [production levels]," he said.  2592
