(KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s administration team held a virtual meeting Friday morning that provided families with details on the district’s potential reopening plan.District officials said their plan is to ease students back in and give families the option to continue to learn virtually, on campus, or through a hybrid program.The first four weeks of the 2020-21 school year, scheduled to begin Aug. 31, will be online. After that period of distance learning, the district will assess the situation; allowing for a possible return to in-class instruction will depend on the level of active coronavirus cases in San Diego County.Superintendent Dr. Francisco Escobedo said a lot of prep work and planning has gone into the district's plan to reopen.During Friday’s meeting, he said, “We want our children to come back because we want in-person instruction. We believe it’s the best type of instruction there is, but we need to come back in a safe manner.”When students do make their return to school, campuses will look very different. The district spent millions of dollars on safety measures, including large sensors that take temperature and dispense sanitizer, large signs, personal protective equipment, and plexiglass dividers."We’ll have signage throughout the school depicting the type of behaviors we expect,” Escobedo added.According to Escobedo, the district has partnered with local company Kahala Bioscience to help conduct routine COVID-19 testing and identify ways to mitigate the spread of the virus.Escobedo said students will return when the county is at a low to medium risk for COVID-19, and when they do, only half of the students will be allowed back on campus with priority for those in K-3 grades.While digital learning is in place for the first few weeks of the school year, campuses will be used for child care through the YMCA, so teachers can utilize that service while in class.In preparation for digital learning, the district is still offering laptops to those who need them. The district has also worked with the city to disperse over 400 internet hotspots throughout Chula Vista.The district also wants parents to provide feedback during the digital learning period so they can access what's working and not working and relay that information to families. 2341

(KGTV) - The Sweetwater Union High School District Board unanimously passed a revised and balanced budget for the 2018-2019 school year.It comes after they discovered a million accounting mistake. The budget did not take into account staff raises.The budget changes are a combination of spending freezes, furloughs, as well as money received from education grants and funds.The revised budget freezes several positions currently open.It also puts district officials on furlough days. “Based on your level of management we’re asking for different days there. So it’s a scale based on your positions. Our superintendent, for example, is gonna be doing ten furlough days this year,” Manny Rubio, a district spokesman, said.The district also worked with the unions, so teachers will give up two so-called ‘training days,’ which are paid, non-classroom days.The budget also touches on other cost-saving measures, including energy conservation strategies, consolidating summer school sites and cutting back on faculty travel expenses.The budget will head to the San Diego County Office of Education, which has until Nov. 8 to approve it. 1188

(KGTV)- The Chula Vista Police Department is debuting a first-of-its-kind program allowing officers to listen in on 911 calls in real time.If you live in Chula Vista and need to call to 911, there's a good chance the person who takes your call won't be the only one listening."Essentially the community is talking directly to officers and getting that information relayed to them immediately," said Lt. Don Redmond, who oversaw the project.The brainchild of a Chula Vista police officer, the department partnered with HigherGround, a dispatch software company, to create Live 911, which allows officers to hear 911 calls inside their vehicles. Here's how it works. Patrol officers can pick an area near them - say a half-mile radius - and listen to any 911 call as it comes in."They're hearing real-time information, as opposed to the inherent delays in dispatching," said Lt. Redmond.Right now, 911 calls are taken by a person who inputs information. A dispatcher reads that information and radios officers to respond. Lt. Redmond says that process can take several minutes. Those minutes could become critical."If it save us two or three minutes, that could be a life that we save," said Lt. Redmond.After a six-month test, Live911 went into all police vehicles in mid-May. Already, there have been examples of quicker response times. On one occasion, an officer got to a home within a few minutes - in the middle of the 911 call - and rendered medical aid. Lt. Redmond says Live911 will also help officers respond better. Because dispatch can relay only so much information, officers in the past only got part of the picture."The officers can hear everything, they are picking up on clues that could be left out," said Lt. Redmond.Those clues could include a person's tone and urgency, and any details that could help an officer better assess or deescalate a situation."We feel like Live911 can be a game changer for law enforcement in general," said Lt. (KGTV) - Two Chula Vista parks closed Thursday due to the threat of falling trees and saturated ground amid a cold winter storm.The City of Chula Vista tweeted the closures about 3 p.m. Thursday.Hilltop Park, 780 Hilltop Drive, and Eucalyptus Park, 436 C Street, are located between I-5 and I-805 in the western half of the city. They will be shut down until crews can remove the trees, city officials said.The ground "is too saturated to access" the trees, according to the City of Chula Vista.All sports fields at both parks were also closed. 572
