ALPINE, Calif., (KGTV) -- Some residents in Alpine are ramping up their yard work after Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency for the Calfornia's most wildfire-prone areas. Alpine residents have a name for yard work. "It's a necessary evil. We have to clear it out," Jonathan Hesse said. 10News met Hesse as he and his son Ben were raking brush and chainsawing a dead tree on their front yard. "The drought, they [the trees] couldn't handle it anymore. So they died," Hesse said, pointing at the row of what used to be lush trees. He said the time had come to chop them down because he was sure they would ignite his entire 2.5-acre property. In the last two decades, the Hesse's have had three close calls. Their last evacuation was the 2018 West Fire. Luckily, they survived, as did their home. But they are not taking chances. "This year, there's a lot of weeds, and that's going to be tough to keep up with," Hesse said. Luckily, he has a helpful son and a sturdy tractor to help with the clean-up process. They will eventually put their large pile of dead logs and branches through a wood chipper to make mulch. Thanks to the work they did today, the flammability of their home is much lower than it was yesterday. "That's one thing we want to do. We want to make sure it doesn't get out of control," Hesse said. A school trip for the eighth grade Mentor, Ohio Public Schools students to Washington D.C. was set and ready to go. Students were excited, bags were packed, lots of money was paid. But on Tuesday — the day before the trip — Discovery Tours, the company contracted by the school district to handle the trip, canceled. What's 511 students multiplied by 5 each? That's 2,505 paid.Discovery Tours told Mentor Public Schools it had to cancel the trip because the company was unable to receive final confirmation for the hotel rooms. The school district said it contacted the hotel itself to get more information."We were told by hotel management that, under advice from the hotel's legal counsel, all they could disclose to us is: Discovery Tours was unable to meet the contractual obligations," Superintendent Bill Porter wrote in a letter to parents.However, the school district said Discovery Tours told them otherwise. But the superintendent said even if the district was able to secure the hotel rooms itself, it wouldn't feel comfortable entrusting the travel company with its students."I am sure you are feeling angry as you read this, as all of us have been since we received the news late this afternoon," Porter wrote. "We know this is an educational experience students look forward to for years prior to 8th grade that is being taken from them for no apparent reason."Porter said the middle school principals will bring all eighth graders together on Wednesday to discuss the situation, and school will be in session as usual.Mentor Public Schools said it is also working to address the financial implications of the cancellation. "Refunds for the trip are undoubtedly on everyone's minds and at this time, we do not have full explanations yet, but I can assure you, we will work diligently to secure restitution," the letter said.Lots of eighth graders are going to bed with sad faces Tuesday night. 1956

After briefly becoming a Category 2 storm on Monday, Hurricane Sally weakened back to a Category 1 storm overnight as it threatens to swamp Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle.In its 8 p.m. CT update, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday that Sally currently has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is currently moving toward the Mississippi and Alabama shores at 2 mph.The NHC said the hurricane is about 70 miles south of Mobile, Alabama, and 70 miles southwest of Pensacola, Florida.At 9 p.m. CT, a sustained wind of 58 mph with a gust of 73 mph was reported at Petit Bois Island, Mississippi, the NHC said.The overnight weakening is a welcome sign to forecasters. On Monday evening, NHC forecasted that Sally could produce winds of up to 110 mph before it made landfall.NHC warned that even though the storm slowed down, it will still produce a "life-threatening" storm surge in the central Gulf Coast region of the U.S. The NHC says "historic" flash flooding is possible as it makes landfall.The agency expects the Alabama coast to see the most flooding, including Mobile Bay.Hurricane conditions are expected as early as Tuesday, and the storm is currently projected to make landfall by Wednesday morning. 1239
