SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man who was hit and killed by an Amtrak train Tuesday night is grieving and hoping he doesn't die in vain.Wentian He, 79, was walking across the train tracks toward the bus stop when he was hit and killed by an Amtrak train, according to his daughter Lilian Zheng. Zheng said her parents were on their way home from shopping.Wednesday, her mother was sobbing, saying she didn't want to live by herself.Zheng said her parents were married 54 years and she saw her dad as a healthy man, young and strong."He really enjoy[ed] learning the streets, the culture, how to behave in this foreign country. He worked really really hard," she said he was part of the Communist Army in China and it took him a while to get 'un-brainwashed'.Her parents emigrated to the U.S. in 2007 and she says they've been enjoying retirement, "They always together go out, they like to go to the senior center, because they can meet new people, they go to the flea market, or small shops so they can find unique stuff."Those trips, now cherished memories.Zheng hopes change can be made at the Washington Street station to protect people like her father. "The two tracks are so close they can cross, there is no [barrier] when Amtrak came, there should be a second gate," suggesting another barrier between the two sets of tracks."I feel life is so fragile, you know he's such a strong father and we've been depending on him," Zheng said tearfully, now they're leaning on each other.Zheng has a sister and niece in China. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers.When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Institutes of Health highlighted research Tuesday out of UC San Diego that could unlock a new way to treat COVID-19.The research reveals new insight into how the coronavirus hijacks cells, and how doctors might be able to set traps or decoys to combat the virus. The findings were published in the journal Cell last month.“It does open up another avenue for a potential treatment,” said UC San Diego distinguished professor Dr. Jeffrey Esko. “It’s not a cure. It would be something that would tamp down infection potentially.”Since January, scientists around the world have understood that SARS-Co-V2, the official name of the new coronavirus, enters cells by latching onto a specific receptor on the cell’s surface, called ACE2.The UCSD team, led by Dr. Esko and visiting scholar Dr. Thomas Clausen, discovered that this entry mechanism is actually a two-step process, and the virus must also attach to a long chain of sugars called heparan sulfate.“We’ve shown this is fundamental to the infectious mechanism, so it needs to be part of every study from now on,” said Clausen.All cells are coated with a complex layer of sugars, or carbohydrates, called glycans. Heparan sulfate is one type of glycan that is known to play a key role in the infection process in several viruses, including herpes and other coronaviruses.It’s a complicated process to picture so the researchers offer an analogy: imagine a bird, soaring over trees, hunting a worm on the forest floor. The bird is the coronavirus and the trees are the thick layer of glycans that coat the surface of the cell.To reach the worm, which in this case is the receptor ACE2, the bird must navigate its way through the trees, specifically through heparan sulfate.The UCSD found that by removing the heparan sulfate trees with an enzyme, they were able to prevent the virus from infecting cells. In laboratory testing, they also found a second technique worked to foil the virus: introducing more trees as bait.The team found that heparin, an FDA-approved drug that is similar in structure to heparan sulfate, successfully acted as decoy. Heparin is a widely used drug designed to treat blood clots. Since blood clots and strokes are common complications with COVID-19, many doctors already administer heparin to patients.The UCSD team demonstrated that the two approaches can block infection in lab-grown cells about 80 to 90 percent of the time.“Certainly in the laboratory you can demonstrate that it works, but to deploy it and use it as a therapeutic has not been demonstrated,” Esko said.The NIH noted that more studies are planned to explore whether heparin, heparan sulfate, or drugs that target heparan sulfate might yield a viable COVID-19 treatment.Dr. Esko said he’s already been in talks with companies that plan to use their study as a rationale for a clinical trial.“It is very humbling when you realize we’re working on a pandemic right now, and maybe what we’ve done can contribute to a treatment for the disease,” he said. 3038
