Lucy Hernandez says she struggles to wake up every morning. The Chicago fall weather makes battling her depression even harder. The sound of her alarm reminds her that she needs to get out of bed and help her daughter start her virtual learning class.“I have been working in the company for 20 years," Hernandez said. “It's like one day you come to work, and they tell you, ‘We don’t have a job for you.’ It is stressful. I have been going through depression.”A recent Pew Hispanic survey shows that U.S. Latinos are among the hardest hit by pay cuts and job losses because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hernandez says it could get worse for her family.“My husband works at a hotel and his place is open, but who knows what is coming,” said Hernandez.Hernandez says her layoff has changed her perspective about the presidential election and will vote for the person who she thinks will bring back jobs. While hotel workers like Hernandez struggle to find a job, employees at Mi Tierra Restaurant work diligently to make sure every customer is pleased with their service. Prisila Fuentes manages the family business and knows that no restaurant is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic."It’s been a struggle,” Fuentes said. “We have been getting back to what we were pre-COVID-19, but it’s a long way from what we had before.”The Fuentes family made the tough decision and closed their doors in April to strategize.More than half of their employees were laid off for a month, but they were later called back.Fuentes says that her recent business struggles will be factors when voting for the next president. She has not committed to either candidate and hopes to get more clarity on their plans for the economy, an issue that for many Latinos is the bottom line in this election. 1777

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Voters have rebuffed President Donald Trump and nominated two Republicans he opposed to House seats from North Carolina and Kentucky. In western North Carolina, GOP voters picked 24-year-old investor Madison Cawthorn over Trump-backed real estate agent Lynda Bennett. In Kentucky, Rep. Thomas Massie easily defeated his Republican challenger, Todd McMurtry. In March, when Massie held up the passage of a coronavirus stimulus bill by signaling he was a "no" on a key procedural vote, Trump called him a "grandstander" and called for his removal from the party.Calls in higher-profile races in Kentucky and New York face days of delay as officials count mail-in ballots. One of Tuesday's top races involves former Marine combat pilot Amy McGrath's fight for the Democratic nomination to challenge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell this November. She faced a challenge from underdog progressive Democrat Charles Booker. The other involves House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel of New York, who is seeking a primary win over another progressive candidate, Jamaal Bowman. Engel is seeking a 17th House term. 1149

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — The things Lt. Col. Joe Jackson stored in his mother's basement before his most recent deployment couldn't be worth more than a few hundred dollars to a pawn shop, he said Tuesday night. They were family keepsakes, mostly: His father's Xavier class ring, relatives' dress watches and mementos from his other tours of duty. Nothing he felt he needed to worry about when he left for Afghanistan on Valentine's Day.They were gone when he returned for Thanksgiving, leaving him awash in "shock, anger and disappointment.""You realize the magnitude — the value beyond the monetary value of the things that were taken from you and how irreplaceable they are," he said. "Whether you can find them in a jewelry store or have them recreated, it's never going to be the same."His mother couldn't have moved them, he said. Multiple strokes have kept Rosalind Jackson in need of daily care since the turn of the century, and her family pays for a rotating team of caregivers to ensure her safety and comfort. She and her son believe one of those caregivers could be behind the theft. The culprit must have had both access to the home and in-depth knowledge of its contents, according to Joe Jackson. He didn't store his valuables in conspicuous containers."It makes me sick," his mother said. "Really."Jackson had returned to Fort Benning by Tuesday night. He said he had been working closely with Middletown, Ohio police to find leads and track down his missing possessions but encouraged members of the public to reach out with information as well. His hope? When he comes home again for Christmas, his treasured keepsakes will be there, too. 1682

Mark Zuckerberg has taken the stage to deliver a keynote at F8, Facebook's annual developer's conference. The CEO addressed Facebook's ongoing data privacy scandal, election meddling issues, and fake news problems, recapping the company's efforts to fix those problems. But he also tried to move the narrative forward with new product and feature announcements."We are all here because we are optimistic about the future," said Zuckerberg. "We have real challenges to address but we have to keep that sense of optimism too. What I learned this year is we have to take a broader view of our responsibility."Zuckerberg called out "Watch Party," a tool announced in January that lets you watch shows while chatting about them with your Facebook friends."Let's say that your friend is testifying in congress, for example. Now you're going to be able to bring your friends together and you can laugh together and you can cry together. Some of my friends actually did this! Let's not do that again anytime soon," Zuckerberg said. And Facebook is adding new features for dating, Zuckerberg announced."This is going to be for building real long term relationships, not just hookups, it's going to be in the Facebook app but it's totally optional. It's opt in... we have designed this with privacy and safety in mind from the beginning... you will only be suggested people who are not your friends."The event comes more than a month after news broke that Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign, accessed information from as many as 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge.Shortly before Zuckerberg's keynote began, the company announced a new privacy feature that will, once launched, allow users to clear their browsing history on Facebook, including what they've clicked on and which websites they've visited.  1865

Mexico Beach, Florida, is not just destroyed. For the most part, it's not there anymore. From a helicopter, you can see many of the homes and hotels that populated this beachside town of about 1,200 are gone. A few houses and other structures remain standing, but they're the exceptions.Hurricane Michael's wind and storm surge ripped up buildings like posies and carried them inland. Where homes once stood, offering premium views of the Gulf of Mexico, a few boards lay scattered across foundations.PHOTOS: Hurricane Michael destructionCars, mattresses, grills and toilets were tossed all over town. An entire house was thrown 100 yards down the beach, landing on its side."We had furniture in our house that wasn't even ours," Scott Boutwell said, explaining that when he returned to his home Thursday the only belongings he could find was a briefcase. 862
