Saudi Arabia has confirmed the death of missing Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in an announcement on Saudi state TV.The Saudis have set up a commission that will investigate Khashoggi's death and will have one month to release a report, according to state TV. The commission will consist of national security officials, the foreign ministry and the interior ministry.Discussions between Khashoggi and those who met him during arrival at the consulate in Istanbul led to an argument and physical altercation that led to his death, the state TV report said.A total of 18 Saudi nationals have now been detained for investigation, the Saudi Press Agency reported. In the announcement on Saudi State TV, it said a royal order has been issued to release Maj. Gen. Ahmed al-Asiri from his duty as the deputy of the intelligence services.Asiri was believed to be the chief architect of the war with Yemen. He was previously the Saudi-led coalition spokesman in the kingdom's war against Yemen's Houthi rebels. The two-star general's position as spokesman made him a household name and he was soon part of the Crown Prince's inner circle.According to several sources, he chose the team involved in Khashoggi's disappearance. In their announcement the Saudis expressed deep regret over Khashoggi's death and the "painful developments" in the case. They affirmed the "commitment of the authorities in the Kingdom to bring the facts to the attention of the public and to hold accountable all those involved," according to a CNN translation of the announcement.Khashoggi disappeared October 2 after going to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul to obtain paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. She raised the alarm to police just before 5 p.m. on October 2 -- three and a half hours after the journalist entered the consulate. At that time she was still waiting outside.Turkish officials now say they believe that 15 Saudi men who arrived in Istanbul on October 2 were connected to Khashoggi's death. At least some of them appear to have high-level connections in the Saudi government. 2127

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A 23-year-old man is behind bars after leading San Diego Sheriff's deputies on a short pursuit in a vehicle that was reported stolen.Deputies received a broadcast from Carlsbad Police of a stolen vehicle on Sunday just after 1 p.m. in the area of Palomar Airport Rd. heading toward San Marcos. Nearby deputies began searching the area and located the vehicle unoccupied in the parking lot of a Target on Business Park Dr. in Vista. While they waited for an ASTREA helicopter and canine unit, deputies set up surveillance on the vehicle. After a few minutes, the suspected driver, identified as Dylan Kidd, returned and deputies moved in toward the vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Department (SDSO).Kidd started up the vehicle and led deputies on a four- to five-minute pursuit, during which deputies say he drove recklessly out of the parking lot and onto nearby streets. Kidd eventually left the vehicle and fled into a nearby canyon, according to the department. The vehicle, however, continued and crashed into the garage door of a home on White Sands Drive, causing some minor damage. With the ASTREA helicopter above, deputies were led to Kidd's location after about six minutes and he surrendered to deputies, SDSO said. Kidd was booked into jail and charged with felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, shoplift/burglary, and hit and run. 1405

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — When Pacific Gas & Electric intentionally cut power to Northern California last fall, few of its emergency managers had learned the fundamentals of managing an emergency in their home state. The nation’s largest utility entered 2019 planning to “de-energize” its aging electric grid so downed power lines couldn’t spark ablaze. Yet only a handful of the hundreds of people who handled the blackouts were trained in the disaster response playbook used in California. The October 2019 outages brought chaos. By contrast, three power shutoffs this fall have been smoother after most of the emergency managers completed the training. 662

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Wells Fargo has agreed to pay at least 5 million to settle a California lawsuit alleging it signed up thousands of auto loan customers for costly car insurance without their consent, resulting in many having their vehicles repossessed. The bank filed the agreement Thursday in a federal court in Santa Ana. It still needs a judge's approval.Another defendant, National General Insurance, agreed to pay .5 million, the New York Post reported.San Francisco-based Wells Fargo confirmed the agreement Friday and called it "an important step in making things right." The bank's statement said that it will be sending checks to affected customers. The 2017 class-action lawsuit alleged that for more than a decade, Wells Fargo tacked on insurance to customers' car loans that they didn't need because they had private insurance. Some 25,000 car owners couldn't meet the additional fees and had their vehicles repossessed, the suit alleged. The bank acknowledged in 2017 that million in unnecessary insurance charges had been added to 800,000 auto loans. It's one in a series of scandals involving the banking giant, starting in 2016 with the uncovering of millions of fake checking accounts its employees opened to meet sales quotas. That led to the resignation of CEO John Stumpf. Last year, the Federal Reserve capped the size of Wells Fargo's assets, and Stumpf's replacement, Tim Sloan stepped down in March. New improprieties had come to light on his watch, including the auto loan issues.Federal regulators who lost patience with Wells Fargo's continued bad behavior inflicted harsh punishments. Wells had to pay a billion fine last year to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. But more importantly, the Federal Reserve stepped in and handcuffed Wells' ability to grow its business until the bank could prove that it had gotten its house in order.Despite the restrictions, Wells Fargo reported in March that it earned .86 billion and profits rose by 14% from a year earlier, helped by higher interest rates.Wells Fargo stock closed down 29 cents Friday at .63 per share. 2169

Segway says it will end production of its namesake two-wheeled personal transporter, popular with tourists and police officers but perhaps better known for its high-profile crashes. The company, founded in 1999 by inventor Dean Kamen, will retire the Segway PT on July 15. The company said 21 employees will be laid off. In 2017, Segway got into the scooter business just as it took over urban streets all over the world. Although popular with touring companies, the Segway didn't take off with the public. 514
