SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Divorce can be financially crippling and takes an emotional toll on all involved. The creators of Vesta: Redefining Divorce know that firsthand. "There are things that happened, you know, I lost lots of family members during that time because they really don't understand the dynamic of divorce," said Bob Vona, a co-founder of Vesta. He created Vesta alongside Deanna Coyle to help others going through what can be a grueling process."What Vesta has tried to do is really educate people as to what question's you need to ask your attorneys, what questions you need to ask your financial advisors," said Vona. The program began in Boston and is now expanding to Southern California.Through free boot camps, Vona says people will have access to highly vetted professionals, including attorneys, financial advisors, divorce coaches, realtors, mortgage consultants, and college planning specialists. "We see time and time again, people make one mistake after another after they sign on the dotted line, and they've hurt themselves financially for the rest of their lives," said Vona. "No matter how much money you make, it's automatically causing an increase of expenses that's a burden," said Vona. Vesta founders say the boot camps are beneficial to people going through divorce, contemplating divorce, or recovering from divorce. And in an often isolated journey, the boot camps provide a support system, letting people know they aren't in this process alone. The first San Diego divorce boot camp will be held in Solana Beach:Wednesday, Oct 236:00pm - 8:30pmSan Diego Family Mediation Center674 Via De La Valle, Solana Beach, CA 92075, USAYou can learn about future boot camps here. 1710

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eight San Diego County gyms have filed a lawsuit against state and county leaders over the public health orders due to the coronavirus pandemic. The gym owners say that restrictions on their business by California and the county have caused, "difficulty in satisfying their financial obligations, having been forced to lay off a significant number of employees" and they have "expended large sums of money in an effort to comply with Defendants’ vague orders."Gym owners say they have lost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, in some cases, retrofitting their businesses to be compliant with reopening measures. The Plaintiffs include Metroflex Gym in Oceanside, Ramona Fitness Center in Ramona, Boulevard Fitness in University Heights, Deadweight Strength in Grantville, Convoy Strength in Kearny Mesa, IB Fitness in Imperial Beach, and Being Fit in both Clairemont and Mira Mesa. The owners added that they have sought clarification of the orders and how they're enforced by law enforcement and the county, but have not received any clarification from officials. The lawsuit claims that public health orders labeling their businesses as nonessential without allowing them to challenge it, and mandatory closures, are not constitutional.Defendants include Gov. Gavin Newsom, all five San Diego County supervisors, and the mayors of each city where the gyms are located. Various local law enforcement and public health officials, including Wilma Wooten, Sheriff Bill Gore, and SDPD Chief David Nisleit, were also named. 1548

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hate crimes throughout San Diego County and across the state are rising at an alarming rate, according to new reports.Hate crimes between 2015 and 2017 rose 27 percent in San Diego County alone, a new report published in Law Enforcement Quarterly states.Statewide, hate crimes rose 44 percent between 2014 and 2017.A report from California’s Attorney General shows that San Diego County saw 95 hate crime incidents in 2017. That compared with 84 hate crimes countywide in 2016 and 72 in 2015.According to documents, anti-Semitic hate crime rose nearly 27 percent from 2016 to 2017 statewide. Hate crimes involving racial bias increased 16 percent within the same amount of time. The statistics come amid recent tragedies around the country, including a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday that left 11 people dead. RELATED: Sign outside UCSD Jewish student center defacedThe rise in hate crimes also coincide with recent events in San Diego. In June of 2018, a sign celebrating the Hillel Jewish center was defaced with an anti-Semitic message. The message painted on the sign, which included the F-word, had lettering resembling the Nazi swastika. The sign, which sat at the corner of La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Road, announced the Glickman Hillel Center, a million project the City Council approved in 2017 after more than a decade of legal opposition. RELATED: Swastikas, rude slurs carved into vandalized Ocean Beach carAlso this year, an Ocean Beach woman made a shocking discovery when she found her can vandalized and covered rude speech, including swastikas. The incident caused thousands in damage.  1713

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone footage recently captured a rare sighting of a blue whale off San Diego's coastline, as it swims right up to a small boat.Domenic Biagini, owner of Gone Whale Watching, says he's already starting to see blue whale sightings off San Diego's coastline this season. In one video he captured, a whale swims up to his boat to investigate before disappearing below the water's surface."This year is looking like much more of a normal year," Biagini said. "I think this is really going to shape up to be a really good blue whale season."He adds that an abundance of krill and pristine conditions are leading to the sightings. Blue whales generally follow where krill are swimming in coastal waters. If there's a high level of krill, the whales will typically spend the entire summer nearby.Blue whale sightings come in spurts, Biagini says, while grey whales are more reliable, making this season even more of a treat for whale watchers. And whale watching could be a safe alternative to sight-seeing this summer, according to Biagini. He says he's currently running private charters, so groups are limited to single household unit sizes and there's enough room for people to space out."These are the largest animals that have ever lived on our planet," Biagini said. "People that get to see them, there's not many."Not a lot of information is known about the mating and breeding habits of blue whales, giving researchers even more opportunities to learn about the animals. 1498

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone video of a Pacific Beach man's search and rescue of his blind pet chameleon plays out like the perfect Hollywood action sequence.Vince Kay Vera says his pet chameleon, "Pete," is temporarily blind due to an infection. "He doesn't normally act like this. He's usually hunting, and hiding, and cruising, but right now he's just roaming aimlessly because he can't see," Vera says.RELATED: Blind San Diego puppy, guide sibling capture hearts around the globeBut that temporary struggle didn't stop the sly Pete from escaping his outdoor enclosure and ending up on the roof of Vera's Pacific Beach condo."So that's all he wants to do all day long, just go straight up," Vera laughed. When Vera noticed Pete was gone, he grabbed his drone and checked the few places he thought Pete could go.RELATED: Coronado gym creates 'March Madness' acts of kindness challenge"I thought it was gonna be hard to find him, but he was just blind wandering around up there you know," Vera said.Video shows Pete perched on the roof, in all his bright neon green splendor. Since there was no roof access, Vera enacted a daring rescue using his drone and some rope. Video shows the rope dangling over Pete, before the chameleon latches on a becomes the Tom Cruise of chameleons.Vera was able to hoist Pete off the roof and safely lower his pet to the ground.Vera's excitement was also caught on video: "Greatest day of my life!" 1434
