SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A short-circuit on a power line near the intersection of Interstate 805 and state Route 905 knocked out electrical service to about 1,600 nearby homes and businesses Tuesday and sparked a small brush fire. The switch malfunction on a utility pole on Hawken Drive in Otay Mesa occurred shortly before 1 p.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The equipment failure sent melted materials dripping onto the ground, setting grass and other vegetation on fire, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to subdue the flames, which blackened about a half-acre of brushy terrain, Munoz said. No structural damage or injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages and Connections Housing were gearing up to accommodate more than 160 additional homeless residents needing shelter Tuesday night due to forecasted rain, according to the San Diego Housing Commission. The commission activates its Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees and the chance of rain is higher than 40%, the temperature falls below 45 degrees regardless of the chance of rain or sustained high winds are predicted. The program is funded through a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman died Monday after being injured Sunday when she was hit by a car in Rancho Penasquitos, police said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Nang Arm, 37, died after she was taken off life support Monday. Medics responded to a call at 7:07 a.m. Sunday on Black Mountain Road and Carmel Mountain Road, where they found an unconscious woman with face injuries, San Diego police Sgt. Robert Hawkins said.A gold-colored 2006 Nissan Sentra driven by 20-year-old Uvelyn Nunez- Jaramillo and carrying two passengers, was heading south on the 13700 block of Black Mountain Road when the car veered to the right, SDPD Sgt. Tim Underwood said.The car went onto a sidewalk, damaged a fence, then struck the Nang. She was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, Hawlins said.The car continued a short distance down the street, where it also hit a water line before it came to a stop. Nunez-Jaramillo exited the Nissan and walked away.Several passersby stopped at the scene to render aid to the woman and emergency personnel, Underwood said.Detectives determined that Nunez-Jaramillo caused the crash. She was contacted and returned to the scene, where police determined she allegedly was driving under the influence.She was arrested and booked in the Las Colinas Women's Detention Facility for felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run.Detectives also interviewed Nunez-Jaramillo's two passengers, who were released, Underwood said. 1468

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man suspected of fatally shooting the mother of his infant son along with the child's grandmother at the women's Otay Mesa home over the weekend has been found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Baja California, authorities said Tuesday.Mexican authorities found the body of 31-year-old Justice Love Peace in a vehicle on Monday, according to San Diego police. His death is believed to have been a suicide.Peace, also known as Jeremiah Alfred Horton, allegedly killed 37-year-old Elizabeth Stolz and her 65-year-old mother, Debora, during a custody dispute that erupted Sunday after he arrived at their residence in the 4300 block of Ebersole Drive to pick up the baby for visitation."This appears to be a tragic case of domestic violence," San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Officers responding to a report of a loud disturbance and gunfire found the women mortally wounded and the child gone.Peace, who was married to another woman, dropped his son off with his wife at her Rolando-area home before fleeing to Mexico, according to police.The child has been placed in protective custody at Polinsky Children's Center, a county-run shelter in Kearny Mesa. 1202

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a first for San Diego County elections, the polls for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election will open for four days, starting today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.In light of COVID-19, voters were encouraged to vote from home using their mail ballot. This close to the election, voters are advised to not mail in ballots, as they may not reach the registrar in time.For those who want to vote in person, they can vote early at their assigned polling place from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.On Thursday, the registrar reported nearly half of the county's 1.95 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, more than double the number received by that point in 2016.More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,702 ballots.Even so, due to the pandemic and a predicted high voter turnout, the registrar's office is continuing to urge voters to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting before Election Day itself.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.There are fewer polling places than in past elections, and the location of some polls have changed so voters are encouraged to check the back of their sample ballot and voter information pamphlet before heading out to vote this weekend.Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance. ``We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home,'' Vu said. ``Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source.
