SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters on alert after seeing the latest Wildland Fire Potential Outlook maps released by the National Interagency Fire Center. The maps show San Diego with an above average wildfire potential that increases from June through August and starts to wane slightly in September.Cal Fire Public Information Officer Thomas Shoots said the outlook focuses on three things; "We're dealing with fuel, weather and topography." Shoots said the agency can't do anything about the topography or weather, but every neighbor can do their part reducing fuel, especially around their home.RELATED: How to prepare defensible space around your homeShoots acknowledged the winter weather gave San Diego County a reprieve fire-wise, but it posed a new problem: new growth that's already drying out."A grass fire can run a lot faster and spread faster which means our resources are spread out quicker, and then that means it has the heat and momentum to build up to the bigger fuels," Shoots said.Just down the road, a neighbor had landscapers pruning her yard."I think it's very important to have this done...helps the whole neighborhood," said the woman named Gene.Cal Fire said the best time to get the landscaping work done is before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.Last week, neighbors in Rancho Santa Fe saw the danger become a reality when Cal Fire said a landscaping crew using the lawn mower sparked a 3-acre fire near Fairbanks Ranch."It's starting to get to the point where it's too late; we need you to clear while we have the chance," Shoots said, referring to hot weather making these incidents more likely."We need all the help we can get," he said."Definitely, they've got a lot of work ahead of them, I think," Gene said.Cal Fire reported this year to June 16th, there have been 1,386 fires, burning 11,954 acres across the state. Last year at the same time, it was about half that, 2,154 fires, burning 20,791 acres. Cal Fire says fires are becoming more common, with 248 wildfires over the past week. 2023
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Foreign ambassadors from around the world made their way to San Diego to visit the border and see how the US handles security Monday. Rolling down a gravel road, at the US-Mexico border, a van carried several foreign ambassadors to the US. The group, part of more than 30, came to San Diego for the State Department’s “Experience America Program.” Monday’s stop – a 14-mile stretch of newly constructed primary and secondary border wall just east of Otay Mesa. As the ambassadors approached, work was being done in the hope of finishing the project by January. “Today we’ve been told how you are protecting the US-Mexico border,” said Javlon Vahobov, Uzbekistan Ambassador to the United States.Like the Uzbekistan Ambassador, this is their first time to California. Border issues top of mind in his home country. “For a country that is located in the heart of central Asia, and surrounded by all 5 central Asian countries- including Afghanistan.”Agents describing how they protect the border, from the construction of the walls, to agents and technology. “Struggling with smuggling of narcotics, fighting trafficking persons. Those issues that have been shared today are very accurate, accurate for the region, for Uzbekistan itself,” said Vahobov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Finding a place to live is about to get easier for low-income San Diegans.Right now, landlords are not required to accept tenants who receive Section 8 rental assistance. However, in August 2019, a new amendment to San Diego's source of income ordinance will prevent landlords from declining a tenant-based only on the household receiving rental assistance."It's safe and everything is right across the street from me," said Maria Hernandez.That's how Maria Hernandez describes her neighborhood in Poway.Maria uses the Section 8 voucher program to help pay the rent. She says she waited about five years for that help."You know without Section 8, I don't know where me or my daughter would be," Hernandez said.Hernandez is lucky. Her landlord accepts Section 8. That's not always the case."I guess there's like that stereotype of people that are on Section 8, you know they think people are going to destroy their homes that people are poor who live on Section 8."Starting August 1, 2019 landlords and property managers in the City of San Diego cannot refuse an application from a prospective tenant, charge a higher deposit, or treat them differently in any other way based on their source of income.According to the San Diego Housing Commission, under the new ordinance, landlords and property managers cannot advertise or state a preference for certain sources of income. The tenant must still meet other requirements for tenancy and have the financial resources to pay any rental amounts not covered by the voucher/subsidy. Landlords and property managers must include any rental payments made by the voucher/subsidy when determining whether the applicant meets the minimum income requirements. Landlords and property managers may ask what an applicant's source of income is as long they do not discriminate based on that information."I want to give an equal treatment to every single San Diegan," said San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez. "No matter how you're going to pay your rent, everyone should be looked at as an equal applicant."Gomez championed the changes to the city's law. She says for some it could be life-changing, allowing renters to choose what part of town they live in not just who accepts their form of payment."It's not just about housing, but better jobs and just an ability to not have that stress," Gomez said.The anti-discrimination policy is just one move making things more comfortable in San Diego.According to SDHC, "Effective July 1, 2019, SDHC increased its payment standards for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance program, which helps more than 15,000 low-income households pay their rent. Raising the "payment standard" expands rental opportunities for families by allowing them to consider housing units with higher monthly contract rents, which are paid by a combination of rental assistance from SDHC and a portion of the tenants' income."Also, starting in August, the SDHC will launch the Landlord Partnership Program, which provides incentives to landlords to rent housing units to SDHC Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance participants. SDHC tells 10news it will expand the Landlord Services Team, composed of specialized staff, to provide quality customer service to landlords and support families in the move process to ensure timely lease-ups.The agency also launched The Landlord Advisory Committee to identify best practices, programs, and incentives to attract new landlords to the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family and friends of a disabled Clairemont woman are making a plea for the arrest of a hit-and-run driver who left her with serious injuries.Last week, a beaming Delores Odom appeared at a surprise party for her 59th birthday. One of the attendees was her friend and neighbor Maritza Gates. "She was so happy that day. It breaks my heart to see her in the hospital now in so much pain," said Gates. On Saturday just before 6:30 p.m., Odom decided to take a walk to grab dinner. She was crossing westbound on Genesee Avenue in the south crosswalk when she was hit by a vehicle that had been going westbound on Derrick Drive and made a left turn to southbound Genesee Avenue, according to police.Odom's daughter Brianna says her mother broke her back in two places. Odom has feeling in her toes, but still faces possible paralysis and requires complicated back surgery. Her recovery and rehabilitation is made more challenging because of a decades-old diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. "There's a special place for people like that. I don't understand how you could hurt someone and then leave them. My mom is one of the nicest people ever. You don't know someone's story when you leave them to die on the street," she said.Police say there is no description of the vehicle and are looking for witnesses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - HazMat teams responded to a fire station in North Park after a suspicious package was found outside the station, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official.Fire crews found the package by Station 14's front door around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when they returned from a call.Fire officials told 10News the package was a taped-up cardboard box with writing on it that made it appear dangerous. Some of the words were misspelled.The hazmat and bomb personnel set up a perimeter around the station, blocking off 32nd Street and Lincoln Avenue by about a block in each direction.The bomb squad x-rayed the package, determined that it was not dangerous, and reopened the street around 5:45 p.m.The package was filled with aluminum flux and trash, according to a tweet from San Diego Fire-Rescue.At about 3p on Sunday someone left this box at SDFD North Park station on 32nd St. The bomb team was called to ID the contents - aluminum flux and some trash.
