UNITED NATIONS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called for governments, organizations and individuals to take active actions, enhance solidarity and establish joint prevention and treatment mechanism to deal with AIDS.Yin Li, vice Health minister of China made the remarks as he addressed the United Nations High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS held here."As a responsible developing country, the Chinese government has actively fulfilled its commitments in achieving universal access to AIDS prevention and treatment, eliminating social discrimination, and ensuring rights to prevention, treatment and care of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families," he said.Thanks to the efforts over the years, the spread of AIDS epidemic in China has slowed down, the morality rate considerably decreased and life quality of people with HIV/AIDS has significantly improved, Yin added.In order to achieve the goal of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths defined by the joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), China called for all countries, organizations and persons to be mobilized, further enhance solidarity and clearly define responsibilities and establish a joint prevention and treatment mechanism.Yin said that in the face of the common challenge of HIV/AIDS, the developed and developing countries must assume shared responsibilities."The developed countries should further provide developing countries with generous, unconditional financial and technical support. The developing countries should give the same priority to AIDS control as economic development, explore the models of prevention and treatment consistent with their national conditions, " he said.In addition, the private sector and relevant organizations should assume more responsibilities. BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- China will start "overall and thorough" safety checks on offshore oil exploration and production to eliminate risks in the wake of oil spills in the country's northern Bohai Bay, the work safety authority said Saturday.The checks, which starts from September 10 to December 10, will be applied to all offshore oil exploration and production, the State Administration of Work Safety said in a circular addressed to oil companies on its website.The companies include China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, ConocoPhillips China, Kerr-McGee China Petroleum Ltd., Roc Oil (Bohai) Company, CACT Operators Group, Husky Oil China Ltd., Shanghai Petroleum Co., Energy Development Corporation (EDC) China and Tincy Group Energy, the statement said.The administration urged these enterprises to conduct self-examinations on their offshore fixed and mobile platforms and floating production storage and offloading units, submarine pipelines and onshore oil terminals in two months till November 10. They should file result reports before November 20.The authority's officials, joined by experts, will launch inspections from late November, the statement said. The checks cover well control amid drilling operation, safety management during production, facilities, and management over extreme weather, it added.The order came after the State Council on Wednesday called for strengthened monitoring and management of the marine environment as well as safety checks over the country's ocean oil fields to toughen safety measures and erase potential risks.The decision was made after oil spills at an offshore oil field run by U.S. oil giant ConocoPhillips have polluted more than 5,500 square km of sea water in the Bohai Bay since June.The central government also imposed restricts on new petrochemical projects and ban reclamation projects in the bay for environmental concerns.China has stepped up efforts to explore and materialize offshore resources to seek more dependence of the marine industries as a strategic development move. CAIRO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine has denied again that the country's fenugreek seeds exported to Europe caused the E.coli infections which have claimed dozens of lives.The Egyptian authorities took and analyzed fenugreek seeds samples from the warehouse of the said Egyptian exporter and all results were negative by the strain, a statement posted on the official website of Egypt's Agricultural Ministry said on Wednesday."E.coli strain has not been reported in Egypt and no illness cases have been found," it added.If fenugreek seeds sprouts are suspected to be contaminated with E.coli pathogenic strain, it could be related to different handling processes, such as the re-packing or water used for sprouting, the statement said.The European Union (EU) on Tuesday agreed to ban the import of certain types of seeds from Egypt as Egyptian fenugreek seeds were reported to be linked with the outbreak of E.coli in Europe.The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published early Tuesday a report from its task force on the E.coli outbreaks in Germany and France, indicating that fenugreek seeds imported from Egypt is the most likely source of the outbreaks.The E.coli outbreak has killed over 50 people in Europe since it was first reported in late May.Russia's food safety watchdog Rospotrebnadzor has also banned the import of certain types of produce from Egypt over food safety concerns, a Russian official said on Wednesday.Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture refuted the claims of Egypt being the source of E.coli Friday.
