SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On most days at the North Side Shack in Point Loma, you'll find Pamela Olivera. She opened the now-thriving shop four years ago."If you're really motivated, if you really enjoy something, wanna do something, you only live once," said Olivera of the gamble that paid off.While she always had a passion for cooking, it wasn't always how she made a living. Olivera was once a paralegal. She thought was a good job for a single mother of three, but it wasn't a job she loved. So, she decided to change that.  She went to the San Diego Workforce Partnership location in Chula Vista, where she found a program that would give her money to retrain for a new career. In her case, it was culinary school. "For me, they offered me a ,000 grant, the program was ,000. That's a third of the cost of the school," said Olivera.The partnership provides a long list of resources for job seekers depending on their needs. The service is free. It's a valuable tool Olivera says more people should utilize.Other resources available include career counseling, job searches, typing certificates and Microsoft Word classes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The 2019-2020 cruise season is officially underway in San Diego, and the Port of San Diego expects thousands of visitors to the region, having a significant economic impact on the city.The Port has 104 cruise calls scheduled, which is up from last year's numbers. Approximately 338,000 passengers will be on the cruises and Port officials say each home ported call has an average of million in economic impact."That doesn't just mean spending money on food and shopping, but that can be maintenance, repairs and things to the ship," said Adam Deaton, with the Port's cruise business development."It's a great, great uptick for San Diego's economy," said Deaton. "We're not in the summer so it's kind of the down season, so cruise is a great pick me up for the winter and fall months."The season began Tuesday with the arrival of luxury ship Le Soleal, from French Cruise company, Ponant.Also this season, Holland America, Disney Cruise, and Carnival Cruise Lines will be featured. Carnival has not been in San Diego since 2011 and its return was much anticipated.The Carnival Miracle will be at the Port starting in December for 12 trips including Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian Island, Baja Mexico and Panama Canal cruises.Starting October 4, Disney Cruise Line will offer 16 cruises from the Port of San Diego. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A former North County Boy Scout said he is one of hundreds of sexual abuse victims in a new lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America.Matt, who only wanted to use his first name, joined the Boy Scouts when he was around 13 years old. He really loved the outdoor activities.“We had a lot of great trips… a lot of good camp outs,” Matt said. Roughly a year after he joined, things changed.“We had an assistant Scoutmaster that started to join us on trips,” Matt said. “He just started spending more time with kids and a lot of these bad things started to happen.”The new lawsuit alleging sexual abuse was filed on behalf of one former scout in Pennsylvania. The total number of alleged victims in this latest wave of accusations is more than 850, according to attorney Andrew Van Arsdale. Matt is one of them.“Our oldest [alleged victim] is in his late 80s. Our youngest is 14-years-old,” Van Arsdale said. Van Arsdale is one of the lawyers involved in the group “Abused in Scouting.” The group came together after hearing the Boy Scouts were potentially filing for bankruptcy. They began a campaign telling victims that they no longer have to be in hiding. “It’s time to come forward. It’s the right time now and the response was overwhelming,” Van Arsdale said. He said he is “100 percent” expecting more people to come forward. For Matt, time has not healed all wounds of what he said the assistant Scoutmaster did to him.“He had come at me on multiple times. I think the first time, I was able to get him away from me,” Matt said. He was able to get away the first time, but not every time. He specifically remembers a camping trip in Camp Pendleton.“I woke up and he had gotten his hands on my genitals and massaging me… I woke up and pushed him off,” Matt said. “I think I just really kind of put it at the back of my head and just tried to forget about it.” But he didn’t forget and he said other kids in his troop were also abused by this man. In a statement, the Boy Scouts of America said that they “believe victims” and that the organization has “taken significant steps over many years to ensure that we respond aggressively and effectively to reports of sexual abuse.” The full statement can be read here. For some, it’s too little too late. “They knew it was a problem for a long time,” Van Arsdale said.“Anytime you got kids with adults having access to kids, you better make sure those adults are reliable, good people. And I don’t know that the scouts are doing that now. I would hope they are, but I know back in the day they weren’t,” Matt said. Matt said he quit because of that assistant Scoutmaster. So far there are eight former scouts in San Diego that are part of these latest allegations against the organization, according to Van Arsdale. 2798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Drugs and graffiti were just some of the problems filling parks around San Diego, with most of the activity happening during the night hours. A curfew has now been put in place for several parks.Community members and city leaders threw a party Friday morning to celebrate the change. Residents have been rallying for a curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park, which sits in the middle of an assisted living facility for seniors. Neighbors say before the curfew, they observed everything from gangs and drugs at the park. “We are this beautiful community,” says Delia Contreras. “We have kids, we have a lot of good things, but the drugs are no good.”Since the beginning of the year, 217 crimes have been reported within a 1,500 feet radius of the park. The crimes include assault, theft, and vandalism. “To me, San Diego is a paradise, and we need to clean up the whole town,” says Ronald Tieken. City Heights Square Mini Park will now have a nightly curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. There were other parks around the city with the same problems. Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park. These parks will now have a curfew of midnight to 6 a.m. “It took a lot of time because we didn’t want to take just one site, so we opened it up for other sites to bring their concerns in, and five parks were identified to go forward with it,” says Raul Contreras, with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Skies across the country filled with messages of change this Fourth of July weekend, including in San Diego. In Plain Sight is a national movement by about 80 artists with a goal of abolishing Immigration Detention Centers. Artists designed messages, then air crews drew those words in the sky.In San Diego, Pedro Rios, the American Friends Service Committee Director, said doing it on the holiday weekend was intentional.“As we’re contemplating the meeting of this weekend and this holiday, we should take into consideration what independence really means when there are tens of thousands of people that are detained right now,” said Rios.Locally, five locations were chosen over spots that have immigration facilities, from downtown down to the border. Individual artists were assigned to each location to create the specific messages.“We need to have conversations that question that and I think this artistic endeavor, In Plain Sight, is part of a larger dialogue of how we converse, of whether detention and incarceration is a best representation of who we are as people living in the United States,” said Rios, a Chula Vista native. 1173
