Financial fallout from the pandemic is hitting millennials hard — and many will soon turn to their parents for help, if they haven’t already.Before parents ride to the rescue, financial planners urge them to map out a strategy that doesn’t just plug a short-term need but also makes sense in the long run.“Often the heartstrings will get pulled — ‘I really have to help them!’— but it can be detrimental to the parent,” says certified financial planner Jeffrey L. Corliss of Westport, Connecticut.(Of course, financial aid can flow the other way, as many millennials help support their parents. I’m addressing parents here, but most of the advice applies to kids helping their folks as well.)Millennials losing jobs, incomeEven before the pandemic, millennials had lower median incomes, far more debt and a much smaller slice of the nation’s wealth than boomers had at the same age. Millennials — usually defined as those ages 24 to 39 — are more likely than older generations to have lost jobs or household income because of the pandemic, various surveys show.“I’ve already seen clients coming in, worried about their kids,” says CFP Deborah Badillo of Miami. “‘They’re going to lose the house! What can I do to help them?’”Have them explore alternativesEncourage your kids to take full advantage of available financial help before extending yours, Badillo says. They may not know, for example, that unemployment benefits have been dramatically expanded because of the pandemic. Weekly payments are higher and are available to people who normally wouldn’t qualify, including gig workers, the self-employed and people whose hours have been reduced.In addition, there are many more options for people struggling to pay debt. Most mortgages qualify for forbearance programs that allow homeowners to skip payments for up to a year. Hardship programs have been added or expanded by credit card companies and other lenders. Federal student loan payments have been paused until Sept. 30, and income-driven programs can reduce payment amounts after that.Another option is a coronavirus hardship withdrawal, which allows people to tap their IRAs and 401(k)s without penalty if they were physically or financially affected by COVID-19. The withdrawals are taxable, but if the money is paid back within three years those taxes are refundable. Raiding retirement funds isn’t ideal, of course, but your kids have many more years to replenish their retirement savings than you do.Assess your own situationWhile your kids are filing for unemployment and calling their lenders, take a moment to assess your own finances. Where will the cash for your kids come from? It’s one thing to give away money you’ve been saving for a vacation, since you’re unlikely to travel soon anyway. It’s quite another to undermine your own ability to retire or handle a layoff or other setback.Some parents make a conscious decision to operate with a smaller cushion, or to delay their retirements, to help their children, says CFP Lazetta Rainey Braxton in New York. Just keep in mind that you may not get to decide when you retire. Many workers retire earlier than expected, often because of a health problem or job loss. Helping your children now could mean you have to lean on them later, Braxton says. If you’re not sure how this financial aid will impact your future finances, a consultation with a fee-only financial advisor could bring you some clarity.Set some boundariesFinancial planners typically recommend deciding how much to give, and then setting clear boundaries about when the financial help will end. That’s tricky now, of course, because no one knows how long the current economic crisis will last.But parents can still set expectations in other ways, financial planners say. If the child didn’t have an emergency fund, for example, parents can discuss the importance of saving money out of every future paycheck, so the child won’t have to rely on family help again, Braxton says.“Some parents will just put on a Band-Aid and give them money, but they really haven’t helped in terms of their financial capacity,” Braxton says.If an adult child is moving back home, Corliss suggests a written contract outlining chores and responsibilities, such as how soon they’ll be expected to move out after finding a job. A similar end date can be set for any cash the parents hand out. "I'm just so thankful they're giving their time to come help us end hunger. I can't thank them enough."Duke started as a volunteer in 2013. He was hooked from the first time he walked into the warehouse."It was cool, the energy that was here, the staff was so welcoming and supportive and made me feel right at home," he says.After that first experience, he started volunteering on a regular basis. Eventually he became a full time employee and worked his way up to his current position."I love setting up the project and I love engaging with the volunteers and hearing their stories and hearing about how they heard about us or came to us. I just love being able to connect with those volunteers," he says.Without the volunteers, Feeding San Diego wouldn't be able to help the 1 in 8 San Diegans who face food insecurity. The collective work they do amounts to an extra 22 full-time employees. For companies hiring right now, ensuring you're hiring the most qualified candidate can be tricky. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way businesses approach hiring and are forcing them to recruit remotely. "Everything we’ve always done previously has been in person. It’s always been encouraged to do in-person, face-to-face communication. From a job seeker's perspective, obviously, it helps to be in-person and kind of take their facial cues and whatnot, so we really had to change everything we were doing," says Erik Cherkaski with the Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board. Cherkaski says one of his main jobs is to recruit employees for local businesses. Because of the pandemic, their recruiting services are now virtual. Recently, the organization has been holding virtual job fairs for a number of large employers."I think one day we had logistics, so we had some of our local fulfillment centers on. Another day we had the service industry on, so some of the local retailers that were doing mass hiring [participated]. Then, we had a focus on government, as well. So, some of the local and state organizations that were doing some hiring and we had some very good turnout. This was new territory for us," said Cherkaski.Employers held virtual presentations for candidates who tuned in using online meeting platforms like Zoom and Webex. "It was very engaging. We got good feedback from our employers and we are looking to do it again. So that was very positive for us to see that we can do something like this online," said Cherkaski.College students and recent graduates are also finding their first career move by participating in online events. Handshake, which helps connect more than 500,000 employers with college students looking for a job or internship, says it's expanding it's virtual services to accommodate universities who've put their in-person career fairs on hold."There are a lot of opportunities that do still exist even with the change in the economy this particular year. We have so many students across so many different walks of life that are looking in for those opportunities to be able to just jump start their career," said Christine Cruzvergara, with Handshake. To help, Handshake created a new virtual engagement module."That is going to allow employers to be able to actually segment, campaign and reach out to candidates that meet the different criteria and qualifications that they are looking for, across all of our thousands of universities and colleges. They can go beyond the basic qualifications in a virtual fair to be even more tailored around, for example, some of their DEI requirements or their goals," said Cruzvergara.Handshake hopes the new tools not only help employers narrow down the types of students they want to hire, but also helps students. "It's going to allow students to maximize the time they do have in between classes or in-between their part time jobs or things they might be doing other responsibilities or obligations they have," said Cruzvergara.As for how long Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board will be holding their recruiting events virtually, Cherkaski said, "if you were to have asked me this four months ago I would have said, Oh this isn’t going to go on too long but now we're four months in and I suspect were going to be doing this for the foreseeable future."Both Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board and Handshake believe even when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted completely, employers will still want to use virtual recruiting events to widen their candidate search.Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Christine Cruzvergara's last name. 3693

  

Former US Senate candidate Roy Moore has filed a countersuit against Leigh Corfman, one of the women who accused him of making unwanted sexual advances.Moore is asking an Alabama state judge to stop all proceedings in Corfman's defamation lawsuit, calling the lawsuit "frivolous and groundless," according to the countersuit filed late Monday in Circuit Court in Montgomery County, Alabama. Corfman sued Moore in January."This is and has been a political attempt to smear the good name and reputation of Judge Roy Moore, and we will not let this injustice continue," Melissa Isaak, one of Moore's attorneys, said in a statement. "Yesterday, we filed claims for slander and defamation against Leigh Corfman, and claimed damages for attorney fees under the Alabama Litigation Accountability Act."CNN has reached out to Corfman's attorney.Moore's countersuit comes after Montgomery Circuit Judge Ronan Shaul last week denied a motion from Moore's legal team to dismiss Corfman's lawsuit, CNN affiliate WSFA reported.The judge also refused to move the suit from Montgomery County to Etowah County, the station reported.In the statement, Isaak said: "We also continue to argue that this case should be tried in Etowah County, and wonder why Leigh Corfman has chosen to file this case in Montgomery and not Etowah County, where both she and Judge Moore reside and where her character and reputation are well known."Corfman told The Washington Post?in November that Moore molested her when she was 14 and he was in his 30s. Moore later said he didn't know her.Moore has denied allegations from a number of women who have come forward accusing him of sexual assault and misconduct.President Donald Trump and the RNC backed Moore in his US Senate race last year, despite the allegations, which dogged him during the campaign.Last December, Democrat Doug Jones, upset Moore to win the Senate race. 1915
