SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political attack ad accuses mayoral candidate Barbara Bry of repeatedly falling asleep at public meetings. The ad is from a committee that supports State Assemblyman Todd Gloria. It says San Diego needs a mayor on alert given the coronavirus outbreak, the threat of wildfires, and the homeless crisis. It then cuts to shots of Bry appearing to doze off at two City Council Committee meetings within the last year. The committee, called Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria for San Diego Mayor 2020, is backed by more than a dozen organizations, including the Municipal Employees Association and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. Attorney Gil Cabrera, its principal, is responsible for the ad."If it was a random falling asleep during a 10-hour council meeting, I'm not going to get into that, there's an amusement factor to it but I'm not going to get into it. It's the pattern of it," Cabrera said.Cabrera said Bry regularly dozes off at public meetings, but also said employees who see it fear retaliation for speaking out. Still, the ad raises questions about accuracy. It shows an image of Bry appearing to sleep at a committee meeting on the city's Get it Done app, while the narrator says she fell asleep during a meeting on police reform. "If this ad is talking about a meeting on police reform but showing a picture of Barbara Bry in a very different hearing, one, that plays a bit fast and loose with the truth and two, it makes problems with the ad the story rather than the Barbara Bry falling asleep on the job, which is what the backers of this ad wanted you to think about," said Thad Kousser, political scientists at UC San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A jury has reached a verdict in the civil trial between NFL star Drew Brees and a San Diego-based jeweler. A jury Friday found local jeweler Vahid Moradi liable for fraud, awarding Brees ,130,767 in damages in his lawsuit against Moradi.The Brees family accused Moradi and his company, CJ Charles Jewelers in La Jolla, of selling Brees and his wife several supposedly investment grade diamonds that would appreciate in value 150 to 200 percent.RELATED: Closing arguments being held in civil trial between NFL star Drew Brees and San Diego-based jewelerThat wasn't the case, according to Brees, who says Moradi lied about the true value of the diamonds. Between 2012 and 2016, the Brees family says Moradi sold them million in diamonds. But when they took those diamonds to an appraiser in 2017, they were told the diamonds are worth million less than what they paid.In one instance, Brees' attorney Rebecca Riley said Moradi sold the NFL star a diamond for .1 million that was actually worth .75 million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man suspected of shooting another man during an altercation on a trolley in downtown San Diego was taken into custody, San Diego police said.At around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the trolley station in the 1200 block of Imperial Avenue after a 35-year-old man was shot in the leg.According to police, the victim was struck by gunfire during in a verbal altercation with another man while both were riding a trolley train. Police said the victim was able to tackle the suspect, and other trolley passengers helped get the gun away from the suspected shooter.The suspected shooter fled the scene following the incident.ABC 10News learned the victim was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive.About 90 minutes after the shooting was reported, officers spotted the man believed to be linked to the incident near Logan Avenue and Beardsley Street and then detained him.The suspect was later identified as 18-year-old Salvador Sanchez Cantero.A motive for the altercation is unclear; the shooting is under investigation. 1072

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Kearny Mesa couple says a local hawk is preying on neighborhood cats, and hope their story prompts pet owners to be cautious. Over Memorial Day weekend Caralee and Joe Jaeckels took their cats outside to enjoy the garden. Not long after, they said a hawk swooped down. "At first we thought it was kind of cool," they said. "It's this bird flying around. But we discovered pretty quickly that it was not a cool thing."The bird began attacking the couple's cat Ludwick. Thankfully, the 16-pound cat was able to escape with only a scratch on his face. His owners say this probably meant he was too heavy for the hawk to carry him away. 677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report says San Diego Unified School District is losing nearly million a year due to the exploding number of charter schools.School districts receive funding per student. The report by the organization, In the Public Interest, found SDUSD loses nearly ,913 a year per charter school student, largely due to costs that cannot be reduced when a student goes to a charter school. SDUSD is the second-largest district in California.There are about 120 charter schools in San Diego County. Roughly 50 of those schools are in the SDUSD. Elva Barajas’ son attends a local charter school.“I liked what they were offering for the students. There were smaller classrooms… less than 25 kids in the classroom. It was more individualized for the students,” Barajas said.Miriam Rodriguez’s daughters go to traditional schools within SDUSD.“At the end of the day, the schools are in my community,” Rodriguez said.The report, called "Breaking Point: The Cost of Charter Schools to Public School District," analyzed three California school districts including San Diego.Superintendent Cindy Marten and SDUSD trustee Richard Barrera argued that local districts need more control over school charter decisions. Barrera said district leaders need to ask critical questions, including fiscal impact. Currently, he said they are not allowed to do so.“What is it bringing to the table, what is it adding to the mix of schools… but also, what is it taking away?” Barrera said.Michelle Anderson, Regional Manager for the California Charter Schools Association, said districts already have enough oversight. “This is really a misrepresentation of issues that came through from a report that was paid for by special interests. Charter schools are really not the bad guys in this issue,” Anderson said.Both sides agree that education funding goes beyond this particular issue, although they differ in the impact of charter schools.
