Arian Tabatabaei's family runs Huapangos in Hillcrest. His parents, Viri and JT, have owned it for more than a decade. Arian and his twin work there to help their parents. "It's been good until now," he said. Like many, their future is up in the air. "It's completely dead in Hillcrest right now," he said. "We're not making any profit to help anybody... all these bills that are coming in, they're just piling right now." They've had to lay off most of their employees. Tabatabaei said they dropped their prices, simplified their menu, and are offering take out or delivery. There's been an ongoing effort on social media to promote businesses that are still open.Laura posted on Twitter that she got pizza for her birthday from Tribute Pizza in North Park. She wrote that "they put your food on your car hood to be totally contact-free." The San Diego Emerald Society posted that they pick up wings from Dirty Birds in Pacific Beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans requested a record number of mail-in ballots for th 2018 general election, 1.2 million to be exact.Now, as tens of thousands arrive at the Registrar's office every day ahead of election day, new technology is helping make sure every ballot is processed and counted."This is our 144 pocket ballot sorter," says Registrar Michael Vu, showing off one of two brand new machines his office bought with this election in mind."After the 2016 election we said the mail ballot population is so great we need to invest in something that's even higher speed," says Vu.The new machine can process up to 44,000 ballots per hour, twice the number of the old machine. It can also sort them by city and council district. That comes in handy with an election as big as this week's."We have 326 contests on ballot, spanning 485 candidates, and 52 measures on there," says Vu.By late Sunday, the Registrar had already received about 500,000 mail-in ballots. That includes several thousand people who voted early in-person. With rising rents and mortgage rates increasing, experts say that trend is about to get worse.“On November 5 my family and I are going to be homeless because it’s very hard to find places,” said Margot Velez.Velez is being evicted from her apartment, the complex she’s called home for nearly a decade. Those are eviction lawsuits.A report by the group Tenants Together, a statewide organization for tenants’ rights, stated landlords file an average of 166,337 eviction lawsuits annually in California, with a total of 499,010 households facing eviction in the three-year period. According to Curry’s website, “After receiving an UNLAWFUL DETAINER [sic], the tenant/occupant must respond timely or lose the case. If you are personally served, you have only five calendar days to respond. If someone is served for you, you may have an additional 10 days. Weekends are counted but the last day to respond cannot land on a weekend (or holiday). If it does, the 'last day' carries over to the next business day. There are many defenses which can be raised.”Curry said tenants should know their rights and try to talk with the landlord ahead of time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Backers of the two competing plans to replace the stadium site in Mission Valley are making their final pitches to voters in a campaign in which each side has spent millions of dollars."We've learned a lot about the politics of San Diego," said Nick Stone, Project Manager for Soccer City, which is Measure E on the ballot.Stone and his team of developers want the centerpiece of the land to be a new stadium for a Major League Soccer team. Measure E also includes promises for new housing, retail, an entertainment complex, and San Diego River park."That's what people care about," Stone told 10News in an interview the day before the election. "They want to know they're getting fair value, that something's going to happen, and that we're going to live up to the commitments we're making. And we are."Should Measure G win, the city would sell the land to the CSU system with plans for a new west campus for San Diego State University. The centerpiece to this plan is also a stadium, in this case, for the Aztecs football team. SDSU West also includes housing, retail, and a river park, along with new research and classroom space and a science center."San Diegans want their kids and their grandkids to be able to have a great education at San Diego State University. And they know that SDSU needs to expand in order for that to happen," said Yes on G spokesperson Laura Fink.Fink points to Measure G's unique coalition of supporters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones.The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. The county's unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in July, the same as a year earlier. There are still about 57,000 San Diegans who are unemployed. 1683
