WASHINGTON (AP) — A statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that represented Virginia in the U.S. Capitol has been removed.Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement that workers removed the statue from the National Statuary Hall Collection early Monday.“The Confederacy is a symbol of Virginia’s racist and divisive history, and it is past time we tell our story with images of perseverance, diversity, and inclusion,” said Northam.Each state is entitled to display two statues in the collection. Lee’s statue had stood with George Washington’s statue since 1909 as Virginia’s representatives in the Capitol.The Lee statue had been one among 13 located in the Crypt of the Capitol, representing the 13 original colonies.Northam had requested its removal and a state commission has recommended replacing Lee’s statue with a likeness of Barbara Johns.Johns was an American civil rights leader who protested poor conditions at her all-Black high school in the town of Farmville in 1951. Her court case became part of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools.Virginia’s General Assembly must approve the replacement before a sculptor can be commissioned for the new statue. But it is facing competition for online delivery of grocery purchases.Amazon is also making a big push into same-day grocery deliveries. With Biden's win certified, the electoral college will formally recognize Biden's win on Dec. 14.The Trump campaign and other Republicans continue to file lawsuits attempting to overturn election results on widespread fraud claims. But none of those lawsuits have proved any systematic fraud or consequential error in U.S. voting systems.Trump has also not been helped by the newly-conservative Supreme Court and the hundreds of federal judges that he's appointed. VISTA (KNSD) - A Carlsbad man who allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl and raped a woman he met online was charged Wednesday with 17 felony counts.Michael Fangman, 47, faces between 20 and 25 years in state prison if convicted of charges involving the minor, identified only as Jane Doe 1, and the woman, identified only as Jane Doe 2.Fangman was arrested shortly before 8:25 a.m. last Friday at his home, Carlsbad police Sgt. Reid Shipley said.Carlsbad police have been investigating since March when they received the first report of sexual assault. The 16-year-old girl contacted police on March 18 and alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by Fangman, who she had met online, Shipley said.The criminal complaint includes allegations that between March 11 and March 16, Jane Doe 1 was sexually assaulted and was given heroin by Fangman during that timeframe. He faces 14 counts related to Jane Doe 1, as well as three pertaining to Jane Doe 2, including forcible rape.According to the deputy district attorney, Benjamin Barlow, all of the alleged acts took place in Carlsbad in the month of March of this year. The judge ordered a no contact order with Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2.
