WEST CHESTER TWP., Ohio — West Chester Police are investigating a racist letter one family said was mailed to them earlier in the week. The letter, laden with racial slurs and derogatory language, demands the family take down their yard signs supporting President-elect Joe Biden and the Black Lives Matter movement.Mia Harlan said when her husband Brian opened a letter from the mail late last week, his reaction told her it wasn't a typical piece of mail."The way he responded, the way he acted, told me something wasn't right," Harlan said.The Harlans have a Black Lives Matter flag and a Biden campaign sign in their yard; the letter the couple received threatens vandalism if the signs aren't taken down.It states, in part, "if you don't take that s*** down in a hurry, we'll be aiming at your house, your cars and you."Racial slurs and expletives in the letter have been censored.Harlan said she was disgusted and angry, and the couple reported the letter to West Chester Police."Stay away from my family," she said. "Stay away from my property...what else would they do? Will they actually come to our home and try to harm us? Or try to harm our children? Our grandchildren?"The Harlans said they're taking extra precautions to stay safe, but refuse to take down the signs in their yard."My message for them is, if you don't understand what you see when this sign here saying 'Black Lives Matter,' if you don't understand the message here, then this is absolutely the thing that needs to be here," Brian Harland said.Barbara Wilson, spokeswoman for West Chester Township, released the following statement on Monday:"The matter is being taken very seriously by the West Chester Police Department. (KGTV) - President Trump addressed questions Tuesday about a possible closure of the U.S.-Mexico border, saying “I’m totally prepared to do it.” Speaking at a White House news conference, Trump called on Congress to make a deal and the Mexican government to stop immigrants from entering Mexico. Trump suggested Mexico had stepped up its efforts to keep Central American migrants from moving north in the past two days. The president also demanded change in what he described as "the worst, dumbest immigration system in the world."“We need to get rid of chain migration, we need to get rid of catch and release, and visa lottery, and we have to do something about asylum, and to be honest with you, we have to get rid of judges,” said Trump. Closing the border would have a severe impact to the U.S. economy, especially in border cities like San Diego. The flow of goods, including avocados and cars, would be disrupted, along with manufacturing supply lines. The Council of Economic Advisers was conducting studies on the potential impact of a border closure and "working with the president to give him those options," said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. When asked about the economic impact of a border shutdown, Trump said, “To me trading is very important the borders are very important but security is what - the most important.” Trump also left open the possibility of closing sections of the southern border instead of the entire border. Jacinda Ardern says Auckland, the nation’s largest city, will be moved to Alert Level 3 from midday Wednesday through midnight Friday, meaning that people will be asked to stay at home and bars and many other businesses will be closed. “These three days will give us time to assess the situation, gather information, make sure we have widespread contact tracing so we can find out more about how this case arose and make decisions about how to respond to it once we have further information,” Ardern said at a hastily called news conference late Tuesday.She said that traveling into Auckland will be banned unless people live there and are traveling home.She says the rest of the country will be raised to Level 2 over the same time frame. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump presented the nation's highest military honor Wednesday to an 80-year-old retired Marine sergeant major who five decades ago "fought with unmatched bravery" at the beginning of one of the Vietnam War's longest and bloodiest battles.John Canley's heroism includes twice scaling a hospital wall in view of the enemy to help wounded Marines and carry them to safety."I like brave people. You meet them right here," Trump said as he opened the ceremony. "Fifty years ago, an American Marine fought with unmatched bravery in one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War, the battle of Hue city."According to the White House, Canley, a native of Caledonia, Arkansas, now living in Oxnard, California, fought off multiple enemy attacks over several days in January and February of 1968 while his company of about 150 men carried out a counter-offensive to retake the city of Hue from North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces, which numbered into the thousands.The operation by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces became known as the Tet Offensive because coordinated attacks against targets in South Vietnam, including Hue, were launched as the Vietnamese celebrated the lunar new year, or Tet holiday."He assaulted enemy strongholds, killed enemy fighters and with deadly accuracy did everything you had to do," Trump said. "He raced into heavy machine gun fire on many occasions — all to save his fellow Marines. In one harrowing engagement after another, John risked his own life to save the lives of those under his command."Canley took over after his commanding officer was severely wounded in the battle to retake Hue, which was held by at least 6,000 communist fighters, Trump said.On the fifth day of combat, Canley's company was charged with liberating the Joan of Arc school, which had become the communists' strategic and symbolic stronghold in the city.Machine gun fire greeted them. Canley and a colleague charged forward with rocket launchers, killing enemy fighters and driving them from their positions, Trump said."The enemy didn't know what the hell happened," Trump said.Canley personally saved the lives of more than 20 Marines during seven days of "unrelenting combat," the president said.As the years passed, some of the Marines who fought alongside Canley pushed for him to receive the highest commendation for a U.S. service member. After a review of the case, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis agreed in December 2017 that Canley was deserving of the honor.Congress passed legislation waiving a five-year time limit on awarding the medal.
