SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed when his car was struck by a trolley after he drove past a trolley crossing gate in the Valencia Park area, police said Tuesday.The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Merlin Drive and Imperial Avenue, east of Valencia Parkway, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 22-year-old man was driving a Toyota Prius southbound on 60th Street toward Imperial Avenue when he drove past trolley crossing arms and was struck by an eastbound trolley, Buttle said. The impact pushed the vehicle about 100 feet down the tracks.The victim, the only occupant of the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Morse High School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.HHSA is working with the San Diego Unified School District to notify those who were potentially exposed and provide TB testing. The dates of exposure are from Feb. 28 to March 13 of this year.Morse High School, in the Skyline area of San Diego, is currently participating in social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 and onsite TB screening will not be available.According to the HHSA, students who were identified as being potentially exposed to TB can get tested with their primary care provider. Students who do not have a medical provider should contact the county's TB Control Program at 619-692-8621 to arrange to arrange an appointment for a free test.School teachers and staff will be provided testing by the San Diego Unified School District.The disease is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed to TB do not become infected."Testing is recommended for all those exposed to make sure they are not infected, since initial infection usually has no symptoms," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a person is infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."Symptoms of infectious TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. People infected with the disease, or who are immunocompromised, may not show symptoms. It can be cured with antibiotics.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years.In 2013, a total of 206 cases were reported in the county, the lowest number since local TB cases peaked at 469 in 1993. There were 237 cases reported in 2017 and 226 in 2018. Last year, 265 residents were diagnosed with TB. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego judge's ruling today clears the way for the proposed Plaza de Panama project in Balboa Park to proceed.San Diego Superior Court Judge Gregory W. Pollack ruled both the project's proposed bond funding mechanism and an agreement of cooperation with the Plaza de Panama Committee to be legal, allowing the city to proceed with the plan to reduce traffic congestion in the park, according to the city attorney's office.San Diegans for Open Government argued that the city should have allowed voters to decide whether the city should rely on million in bonds to help fund the project.The City Council approved the project by a 7-1 vote in 2012, but six years of challenges and litigation stalled its implementation.The project will limit vehicle access and improve parking in order to restore the Plaza de California and Plaza de Panama as dedicated pedestrian areas."Balboa Park truly is the jewel of San Diego, and I am excited that the city can finally move forward with its plans to revitalize the Park for the enjoyment of San Diegans and tourists alike," City Attorney Mara W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An outbreak of leptospirosis, a contagious bacterial disease, has been reported in dogs in the region, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday.Since October, 34 confirmed and probable cases of leptospirosis have been documented among local dogs, primarily in the Hillcrest and Mission Hills areas. Several dogs required hospitalization and at least one was euthanized.Boarding at kennels that allow dog-to-dog interaction is a major risk factor, though some ill dogs only had contact with other dogs at dog parks. The kennels that were linked to cases notified the owners of all potential contacts of diagnosed cases and closed for at least two weeks for cleaning and disinfection.Signs of leptospirosis in dogs are varied and can include fever, muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, low energy and frequent urination, which may be bloody.No human cases have been linked to this outbreak in dogs, but anyone who develops fever, headache, muscle aches -- especially in the back and calves -- or other illness after contact with a sick dog should see their health care provider.This week, the county sent a health advisory to local physicians and veterinarians about the outbreak.Leptospirosis is a disease caused by various species of spirochete bacteria called leptospira. These bacteria can infect multiple species of mammals, including humans, dogs, rats, mice, raccoons, skunks and opossums. The bacteria are shed in the urine of infected animals and may contaminate food, water, soil or bedding.
