SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service is handling nearly 16 billion deliveries this holiday season, a record number.Warren Burton, a program manager at the USPS, says it is a 12 percent increase from last year.“There’s a lot of online shopping,” he said, “a lot more than last year.” As a result, the USPS processing and distribution center at Carmel Mountain Ranch in San Diego added more seasonal workers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock ’n’ Roll marathon returns to San Diego in June, bringing hundreds of athletes and music to city streets. The 5K event is scheduled for Saturday June 1, while the half-marathon and marathon will be held Sunday, June 2. Entry fees are , 2, and 2 respectively. The marathon course starts on Sixth Avenue near Balboa Park. It extends as far east as Kensington, and north to Mission Bay Park, with a finish in Little Italy. Runners can enjoy the sounds of bands along the course, and support from San Diego cheerleading groups. For those who don’t want to run, the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Health and Fitness Expo will take place Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1 at the San Diego Convention Center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of Californians gathered Saturday night across the state to protest the newest restrictions put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Last Saturday, Syndie Ly helped organize the first "Curfew Breakers" rally. "Across 16 cities, we had 10,000 people show up," she said.Ly lives in Huntington Beach and said in four days their Facebook page "blew up."She said people are frustrated by the curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. saying it is an overreach, "when the government starts telling you when you can leave the house, how many people you can invite over to your own home."What's happening in the U.S. reminds her of when her family escaped in Vietnam."I was born in China and my parents emigrated to Vietnam, and we came here [to the U.S.] legally but we came here as refugees to escape North Vietnam during the fall of Vietnam ... Just being told what to do, a lot of the government overreach, I feel we're actually on the brink of getting back to that and that's why I'm involved in this," said Ly.She said between layoffs and businesses being forced to close, the impact on people's livelihoods is worse than the virus itself."It's our lives, and we feel we are responsible individuals that can make our own decisions," Ly said.The rallies will continue every Saturday, starting at 10:01 p.m. until Ly and the organizers see change, she added.In San Diego, a rally is planned for Saturday at 10:01 p.m. at 910 N. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is hosting a Holiday Bowl blood drive during a time of year when donations are typically low. The drive will be held Thursday, November 21 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot, sections A and B. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment ahead of time, but walk-ins are also welcome. The blood bank says they hope to get several hundred people to donate, because the winter is always a slow time."People get busy, they go on vacation, and blood donation kind of falls off as a top priority," says Blood Bank CEO David Wellis. "The need for blood, though, doesn't decline.The blood bank likes to have a 4-7 day supply on hand. Right now, Wellis says they have about 2 days. "We've done Comic-Con for 43 years. That started off small and it's giant now. And in the summer we have the annual Padres blood drive that's growing quite nicely."Games and giveaways will also be set up throughout the day. To be eligible to donate blood, participants must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 114 pounds. Donors must also be in general good health.
